The best choice depends on what you want the device to do: a sleep tracker records estimates and patterns, a sunrise alarm creates a gradual wake-up routine, and a light-therapy lamp delivers light for a defined therapeutic purpose. They are not interchangeable. Use the criteria below to compare products within each category, and treat sleep or light-therapy concerns as questions for a clinician—not as problems a shopping feature can diagnose.
How the three device types differ
| Device | Primary role | What to compare | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consumer sleep tracker | Observes sleep-related estimates and patterns over time. | Comfort, fit, charging, app usability, available metrics, data handling, and recurring costs. | It is not a diagnostic or treatment device for sleep disorders. |
| Sunrise alarm clock | Uses a gradual light increase as part of a wake-up routine. | Ramp duration, brightness controls, alarm sound and backup, schedule setup, display dimming, and bedside controls. | The reviewed guidance does not establish that a sunrise alarm provides therapeutic light-box intensity or treats seasonal affective disorder. |
| Light-therapy lamp | Provides bright light for a specific light-therapy purpose, such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or a clinician-guided sleep-wake timing plan. | Illuminance at the stated distance, UV filtering, size, positioning, adjustability, and safety instructions. | Intensity, distance, timing, and duration matter; a product listing alone is not an individualized treatment plan. |
The practical distinction is purpose. A tracker helps you observe; a sunrise alarm supports a wake-up routine; a therapy lamp is used with attention to light exposure and timing. A light feature on an alarm should not be assumed to do the job of a therapy box.
Best sleep trackers: what to look for
Choose a tracker you can wear or use consistently, and decide in advance which information you expect to learn from it. A comfortable device with a usable app may be more practical than one that displays many metrics you do not intend to act on.
- Comfort and fit: Consider whether you can sleep comfortably with a wrist-worn, ring-style, or other form factor. Check sizing and whether the device is easy to remove and put back on.
- Battery and charging: Look at how often charging interrupts overnight use and whether the charging routine fits your day.
- Useful app and metrics: Check which estimates the app exposes, whether the information is understandable, and whether you can review trends rather than focusing only on one night’s score.
- Data and ongoing costs: Review export options, privacy terms, account requirements, and which features require a subscription. These terms vary by product and can change.
- Claim boundaries: Treat sleep stages, scores, and nightly estimates as consumer-device outputs, not as a diagnosis.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) says consumer sleep technology should not be used to diagnose or treat sleep disorders, citing limitations in validation and U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance. It notes that consumer data may still help a patient and clinician discuss sleep as part of an appropriate evaluation. AASM’s 2018 position statement is the key boundary when assessing tracker claims.

That position should not be confused with AASM guidance on clinical actigraphy. Its 2018 actigraphy guideline gives conditional recommendations for specified clinical settings and applies them to FDA-approved devices. In that clinical context, it recommends recording for a minimum of 72 hours up to 14 consecutive days; that is not a recommended wear period for consumer trackers generally.
If you suspect sleep apnea, insomnia, a circadian rhythm disorder, or another sleep disorder, seek clinical evaluation rather than relying on a consumer tracker to identify or rule out the condition.

Sunrise alarm clock: what to look for
A sunrise alarm is primarily a wake-up convenience. Compare whether its controls and alarm behavior suit your routine, rather than assuming that a gradual light ramp has the same purpose or effect as bright-light therapy.
- Adjustable ramp and brightness: Check how the light’s increase is configured and whether you can set a level that is comfortable in your bedroom.
- Reliable alarm behavior: Look for the alarm sounds you want and what happens if the light is obscured, the device loses power, or a backup alarm is needed.
- Schedule controls: Check how easily you can set, change, and repeat wake times.
- Night-time usability: Consider display dimming, physical controls you can find in the dark, and whether the interface is straightforward.
The NHLBI describes light timing as dependent on the sleep-wake shift desired: morning light can move sleep and wake times earlier, while late-afternoon or early-evening light can move them later. Its guidance concerns light timing, not proof that a particular sunrise alarm delivers an effective therapy dose. NHLBI’s sleep-disorder treatment guidance also identifies light visors and glasses as possible light-therapy formats.

Do not treat a sunrise alarm as a substitute for a prescribed or clinician-guided light-therapy plan. The sources cited here do not establish that sunrise alarms treat SAD or provide the intensity of a therapy box.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Light therapy lamp: what to look for
Start with the intended use and any guidance from a clinician. For SAD, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) describes typical light boxes as 10,000 lux and UV-filtering. Its provider digest describes typical daily use as 20–60 minutes each morning. Those figures describe typical use; they are not a universal regimen for every person or every lamp. See NCCIH’s SAD overview and its January 2019 provider digest.

- Illuminance at the recommended distance: Check the distance at which the lamp’s stated lux figure applies. Do not assume its headline number holds farther away.
- UV filtering: Confirm that the product filters UV as appropriate for the intended use; NCCIH describes typical SAD light boxes as UV-filtering.
- Positioning and size: Check whether the lamp can be placed at the instructed position while you sit or work, and whether its illuminated area suits that setup.
- Adjustability and instructions: Review settings and the manufacturer’s guidance for use, distance, duration, and safety. A high headline lux figure by itself does not tell you how to use a device.
Timing is not one-size-fits-all. NHLBI says, “To move your sleep and wake times earlier, use the light box when you wake up in the morning.” It also describes late-afternoon or early-evening use for moving sleep and wake times later. Because the appropriate timing depends on the desired shift, do not devise a treatment schedule from a product listing; discuss SAD symptoms or sleep and circadian concerns with a clinician. NHLBI’s guidance explains the timing distinction.
How to make a criteria-led choice
- Name the job. If you want to observe patterns, compare sleep trackers. If you want a gradual wake-up routine, compare sunrise alarms. If you are considering light therapy, assess a therapy lamp against the intended use and relevant clinical guidance.
- Set a short list of practical requirements. For a tracker, include fit, charging, app, data terms, and subscriptions. For an alarm, include ramp controls, sound, schedule setup, and backup behavior. For a lamp, include lux at distance, UV filtering, positioning, and instructions.
- Verify the claim that matters. Separate convenience features from clinical claims. A sleep score is not a diagnosis, and a lamp’s or alarm’s promotional description does not establish treatment effectiveness.
- Check the exact model’s documentation. Compare current product specifications, safety/use instructions, privacy terms, and recurring costs before buying; these details are model-specific and can change.
- Get clinical help when the goal is treatment or diagnosis. A suspected sleep disorder or a need to shift sleep timing calls for an appropriate evaluation, not a device-based guess.
Official guidance establishes useful boundaries and typical light-box practices, but it does not identify a best-performing current model in any of these categories. A careful buyer should choose by intended role and verifiable specifications rather than by a generic “best” label.
