For most news articles, use SingleFile’s normal full-page save with its default cleanup settings, and make sure the article and any images you need have finished loading before you capture. If a particular site saves slowly or omits important content, adjust the relevant options rather than assuming one universal “news” preset exists.
Start with a complete page capture
SingleFile saves a webpage as a self-contained HTML file. For an article you want to keep for offline reference, use the ordinary page-save workflow rather than selecting only part of the page. The default destination is your browser’s configured download folder. The project also supports saving selected content, frames, and multiple tabs, but selected-content saving is best reserved for cases where you deliberately want an excerpt instead of the full article page. Recommended settings and when to change them
| Goal or symptom | Setting to use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve the article and its layout for ordinary offline reading | Begin with the default configuration and save the full page. | Defaults are optimized to produce smaller saved pages; publishers’ pages differ, so inspect the saved copy. |
| Images or embedded content appear late | Enable loading deferred images and iframes before saving. Wait until the article text and the resources you need are visible before capture. | There is no single documented wait interval that works for every site. |
| Saving is slow or uses substantial CPU | First try disabling HTML content > remove hidden elements and Stylesheets > remove unused styles. | The save may include more hidden markup or styling. Disabling frame removal or deferred-image saving can also reduce processing, but may leave resources out. |
| An interactive element matters to you | Scripts are removed by default. For a specific page, try unblocking scripts; you can also retain hidden elements, unused styles, and raw page content where needed. | More preserved code does not guarantee an interactive feature will work offline; it may depend on the original site. |
| You have a site-specific setting combination that works | Save those choices as a profile and configure automatic selection by URL. | Profiles help repeat a choice you have already found useful; the project does not document a prebuilt news-article profile. |
These options and trade-offs are described in the SingleFile FAQ and the official feature list.
Check the saved copy, not just the live page
- Open the saved HTML file from your download folder after the capture finishes.
- Check that the headline, article text, and any images or embeds you intended to retain are present.
- If something is missing, identify whether it was still loading, deferred, inside a frame, hidden, or dependent on scripts; adjust only the relevant option and save again.
- If a repeat visit to the same publisher requires the same adjustment, save it as a URL-selected profile.
A saved file records what the browser extension captured at that time. It does not preserve every server-side behavior, guarantee future page versions, or ensure that scripts and dynamic features will work offline. SingleFile’s FAQ also notes that browser security blocks extensions on certain domains.

Choose a file format and destination for your archive
SingleFile supports a single HTML file and a self-extracting ZIP option. For ordinary personal reading, the browser’s local download folder is the simplest destination. The project also lists remote destinations such as GitHub, Amazon S3, Google Drive, and WebDAV. If you keep a growing local collection, a separate external drive can serve as an optional backup; it is not required for SingleFile to work. SingleFile feature list
When SingleFile is not the right kind of archive
SingleFile is suited to personal offline copies, not professional preservation of web content. Its own FAQ says it is not a tool used by professionals to archive content on the Web, especially in the academic field, and points professionals toward tools based on the WARC specification. If you need an archival record under that kind of workflow, use a WARC-based tool rather than treating a saved HTML snapshot as an equivalent.

If your goal is to capture a clean view of an article page rather than keep a personal SingleFile archive, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. A cURL request returns an image; for a screenshot of a page, use the API rather than treating it as a substitute for a self-contained HTML file.
