After installing an RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT, first install the current official driver, verify your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, and check whether adaptive sync is supported. Then tune graphics settings inside each game for your preferred balance of image quality, frame rate, and latency. There is no universal driver preset that is best for every system or game.

1. Install the official driver and confirm the GPU is recognized

Start with the driver for your card rather than assuming an existing installation is current. NVIDIA’s February 20, 2025 announcement for the RTX 5070 Ti directs new owners to the latest GeForce Game Ready Driver through NVIDIA App or GeForce.com. Check NVIDIA’s current driver listing when setting up the card, since the announcement is not a guarantee that its driver is still the newest one. NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 Ti driver announcement

For the RX 9070 XT, use AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition to access AMD’s graphics settings and application profiles. After installation, verify that the vendor software identifies the intended GPU and reports a driver version. Start with the software’s default settings or a default profile; a clean driver wipe is not automatically necessary just because you changed graphics cards.

2. Set the monitor’s intended resolution and refresh rate

A new GPU does not automatically mean your display is using its best supported mode. Confirm that the monitor is connected to the intended graphics card, then check the operating system’s display settings for the monitor’s native resolution and the refresh rate you intend to use. Choose only a mode supported by the monitor and connection.

On NVIDIA systems, NVIDIA App includes display and resolution options, while some controls remain in NVIDIA Control Panel. On AMD systems, inspect Display Settings in Adrenalin. If you are unsure which modes your monitor supports, check its specifications or manual before selecting a custom resolution or refresh rate. 3. Check adaptive sync compatibility

Adaptive sync can help a compatible display coordinate its refresh behavior with the GPU, but do not treat it as a universal switch. Compatibility depends on the display, its settings, the connection path, driver, and graphics card.

On an AMD system

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition can show FreeSync status and certification tier. AMD says FreeSync turns on automatically on supported graphics-card and display combinations; use Adrenalin to confirm the status rather than assuming it is active. The available controls and behavior can vary by system configuration. AMD’s FreeSync instructions

On an NVIDIA system

Check G-SYNC display options in NVIDIA App or NVIDIA Control Panel, and verify that your monitor and connection support the mode you want. NVIDIA App exposes display options, but the available source does not provide a current monitor-by-monitor compatibility list, so confirm support for your specific display rather than assuming every adaptive-sync monitor will behave identically. 4. Keep global settings conservative; tune per game

Both vendor ecosystems offer global controls as well as game-specific settings. AMD Adrenalin supports global graphics settings and application profiles; NVIDIA App supports global and per-program driver settings. Use global options only when you want the same behavior across your games. If one game needs a different balance—for example, lower latency in a competitive game and higher image quality in a single-player game—make that change in its profile instead.

Leave options at their defaults unless you have a reason to change them. Adjust one setting at a time and compare the same game scene before and after; otherwise, it is hard to tell which change affected image quality or performance. A driver override is not guaranteed to improve every game. Avoid treating sharpening, anti-lag, synchronization, or a frame-rate limit as a universal best setting. 5. Check Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory support

Resizable BAR on NVIDIA systems and Smart Access Memory on AMD systems depend on platform compatibility and configuration. Before changing firmware options, confirm support for the relevant CPU, motherboard, BIOS, graphics card, and driver combination. The NVIDIA Resizable BAR explainer uses RTX 30-series-era examples, and AMD’s cited Smart Access Memory background covers RX 7000-series-era guidance; neither establishes a complete current compatibility list for the RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT.

  • Check whether the motherboard platform supports the feature and whether a current BIOS is required.
  • Review the platform’s firmware settings and instructions before changing them.
  • After setup, check the appropriate vendor interface for a status indication. NVIDIA’s explainer describes checking Resizable BAR in NVIDIA Control Panel.

Do not enable an unfamiliar firmware option solely because a guide says it is beneficial; confirm that the instructions apply to your particular system. NVIDIA’s Resizable BAR overview · AMD Radeon RX 7000 Series Quick Reference

6. Set graphics options in the game around your goal

Start with the game’s recommended or high preset, then decide what you want to improve: native image quality, higher frame rate, lower latency, or a balance. Test a demanding scene and pay attention to frame pacing as well as the average feel of play. Change one in-game option at a time so you can identify trade-offs.

  • For image quality: Begin with the game’s quality preset, then assess demanding effects such as ray tracing individually.
  • For higher frame rates: Test the game’s own quality, upscaling, and frame-generation options. Their results and implementation differ by game.
  • For lower latency: Prioritize stable frame delivery and assess the game’s own latency controls against how the game feels.

These are decision paths, not tested settings for either card. The right choice depends on the game, target resolution, measured performance, and your tolerance for latency or image-quality changes. Consult the game’s own documentation for exact behavior of its upscaling, frame-generation, ray-tracing, and latency options.
