Before paying for any service, confirm it can repeat media continuously, how it reconnects after interruption, its media and storage limits, what control you have over the YouTube event, and what happens to the archive.
What you need before going live
Qualify the YouTube channel
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Live streams must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; YouTube may age-restrict or remove content or restrict live-streaming access. Review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before scheduling or starting.

Check that you hold the necessary rights to every video, song, image, and other included material. A prerecorded format does not exempt a broadcast from YouTube’s rules. Reused or copyrighted material can create policy and rights issues; read YouTube’s applicable guidance and resolve permissions before putting a long-running stream on air. YouTube’s live-streaming help page sets out the platform rules, but does not guarantee that a particular work is cleared.

Protect and apply the stream key
A stream key connects an encoder or service to your YouTube channel. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or send it to anyone who should not be able to broadcast to the channel. Add it only in the provider’s intended YouTube setup. YouTube documents up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key; these are platform limits, not uptime guarantees.
How to set up a loop with a computer and OBS
OBS is the local do-it-yourself route. The computer, OBS, and network connection must remain available for the stream to continue; a playlist must also be configured to repeat rather than stop after one pass. - Verify the channel and enable live streaming. Complete YouTube’s channel verification and confirm there are no current restrictions preventing a live broadcast.
- Prepare a playlist and test the media. Confirm each file plays correctly, has the intended audio, and can be looped by your chosen OBS workflow. Make sure you have rights to all material.
- Configure OBS for YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key as prompted. The exact available connection options can vary by OBS and YouTube interface version.
- Set output to match the source and connection. Choose a resolution and frame rate your uploaded videos and sustained upload connection can support. Set an encoder bitrate appropriate to that output and connection; the reviewed sources do not establish a universal bitrate recommendation for every resolution, frame rate, or network.
- Check keyframe and output settings. Use the settings shown by the current YouTube encoder guidance for the selected stream configuration. The cited OBS guide is a setup resource, not a guarantee that one fixed bitrate or keyframe interval suits every channel and source.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS, then check YouTube Studio’s live control room for incoming video and audio and confirm the public event behaves as intended.
- Keep the operating system and connection awake. Disable sleep or automatic shutdown for the duration, keep OBS running, and monitor power, network stability, and playback. If the computer or connection fails, the stream can stop.

Archives and long-running broadcasts
A live channel can remain active longer than a single useful replay. Restream’s YouTube setup guidance, dated July 9, 2026, says YouTube archives streams only when they are under 12 hours; do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will be preserved as one continuous recording. Scheduled prerecorded broadcast versus continuous loop
StreamYard’s prerecorded workflow is useful when a video should begin at a chosen time and then end after playback. Its help article says videos can be scheduled up to 365 days ahead. For YouTube, the shareable link is created at announcement-post time, or when the broadcast goes live if no announcement is scheduled. Comments may be visible on the destination but are not shown on-stream, and overlays or media assets cannot be controlled like they can in a normal live studio. Prerecorded streams are no longer automatically saved to StreamYard’s library, so arrange your own recordkeeping if needed. Those characteristics do not make it a repeating 24/7 loop. Troubleshooting a YouTube loop
- You cannot start a live stream: verify the channel, check for live-streaming restrictions, and confirm you are using the intended channel and stream key.
- YouTube receives no video or audio: check the selected YouTube destination, key, encoder output, and OBS preview; then check YouTube Studio’s live control room for the incoming signal.
- The video plays once and stops: the workflow may be a finite prerecorded broadcast rather than a looping playlist. Confirm repeat behavior before going live.
- The stream stops when you leave: a local OBS setup depends on the computer and connection remaining active. Use an operating model that does not depend on a home computer if that is not acceptable.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: YouTube archive behavior has limits; Restream’s July 9, 2026 guidance says only streams under 12 hours are archived. Keep a separate recording when an archive matters.
- The stream is removed or restricted: review YouTube’s notice and applicable policies, including Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and rights to the material. Do not assume that prerecorded content is exempt.
