For a full-document screenshot in Python, use Firefox WebDriver’s get_full_page_screenshot_as_file() or its save_full_page_screenshot() alias when Firefox is an option. For Chrome or Chromium, Selenium’s standard screenshot captures the current browsing context; use a Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) implementation to capture beyond the viewport. These are browser-specific approaches, not interchangeable Selenium libraries.

What “full-page” means in Selenium

A full-page screenshot includes document content below the part currently visible in the browser viewport. Making the browser window taller does not establish that the entire document was captured. Selenium’s ordinary screenshot method captures the current window, and the WebDriver TakeScreenshot command is described as capturing the current browsing context. See Selenium’s screenshot documentation.

Choose the capture route based on the browser you must support: Firefox has documented full-document methods in Selenium’s Python API; Chromium requires browser-specific CDP work for this pattern. No comparative performance or quality benchmark is established here, so choose based on compatibility and maintenance requirements rather than an assumed speed advantage.

Which approach should you choose?

Approach Browser fit How it captures beyond the viewport Maintenance considerations
Firefox full-document WebDriver API Firefox Direct full-document screenshot methods in Selenium’s Python API Use the documented API and PNG output; check the file method’s Boolean result.
Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) Chrome or Chromium Use the Page domain’s screenshot command with beyond-viewport capture enabled, typically after obtaining document dimensions. Browser-specific; confirm command parameters against the deployed Chrome and Selenium versions.
Scroll and stitch Fallback where direct browser routes do not fit Capture viewport slices while scrolling, then combine them. Requires care with lazy-loaded content and sticky elements that may repeat in slices.

Firefox: capture the full document directly

Selenium’s Python Firefox API documents get_full_page_screenshot_as_file(path) and the alias save_full_page_screenshot(path). The file methods save PNG output and return True on success or False for an I/O error. Use a .png filename, and check the return value rather than assuming the file was written. The API also provides PNG bytes and base64 methods. See the Selenium Python Firefox WebDriver API.

Runnable Python example

Install Selenium with python -m pip install selenium. The example expects Firefox to be installed and a Selenium-compatible driver available to Selenium’s driver management in your environment.

from pathlib import Path
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.firefox.options import Options

url = "https://example.com"
output = Path("full-page.png")

options = Options()
# Uncomment for headless capture:
# options.add_argument("-headless")

driver = webdriver.Firefox(options=options)
try:
    driver.get(url)
    saved = driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file(str(output))
    if not saved:
        raise OSError(f"Could not write screenshot to {output}")
    print(f"Saved full-page screenshot to {output.resolve()}")
finally:
    driver.quit()

Replace the example URL with the page you need. For a page whose important content appears after client-side rendering, do not capture immediately after navigation; wait for the relevant content as described below.

Return PNG data instead of writing a file

Use get_full_page_screenshot_as_png() when the next step in your program needs raw PNG bytes, or get_full_page_screenshot_as_base64() when it needs a base64 string. These methods avoid the file-writing return-value check, but you remain responsible for handling the returned data and any later storage operation.

Chrome and Chromium: use CDP deliberately

For Chrome or Chromium, a common full-page pattern uses the CDP Page domain: obtain layout metrics to determine the document dimensions, then call Page.captureScreenshot with beyond-viewport capture enabled. CDP is browser-specific, and protocol details can change. The official Chrome DevTools Protocol Page domain documents captureScreenshot and getLayoutMetrics, but its tip-of-tree reference may not exactly match an installed browser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before adopting a CDP snippet in production, check the exact command and parameter shapes supported by your deployed Chrome and Selenium versions. Pin or document those versions, and validate the returned image dimensions and contents on representative pages. Do not substitute driver.save_screenshot() and assume it includes content below the viewport; it is not a portable full-page method.

Python integration pattern

The protocol-level sequence is to query layout metrics, set a capture clip based on the page dimensions, and request beyond-viewport capture. The exact Selenium CDP command wrapper and accepted parameter shape vary with the browser and Selenium versions, so use the protocol exposed by your installed combination rather than copying an unverified universal snippet. At minimum, verify that your implementation:

Scroll-and-stitch as a fallback

A scrolling implementation captures successive viewport images and joins them into one image. It can be useful if the direct Firefox API or a suitable CDP route is unavailable, but it adds image-processing work and page-specific failure modes.

  • Lazy-loaded content: scrolling may be needed to trigger images or other material that is only loaded near the viewport. Allow the page to update before capturing each slice, and check that the final image contains the expected content.
  • Sticky headers and overlays: fixed or sticky elements may appear in every slice. Hide them, account for overlap, or otherwise handle repeated UI deliberately.
  • Dynamic page height: content can be appended while scrolling, so a height measured only at the start may not represent the final page. Recheck the document and inspect the bottom of the output.

Scroll-and-stitch behavior depends on the page and implementation. Validate it with the actual long and dynamic pages you intend to capture.

Wait for the page state you need

A screenshot records the rendered state at capture time, not an abstract, fully loaded version of a site. Navigation completion alone may not mean that client-rendered text, images, or below-the-fold material is ready. Wait for a meaningful page condition—such as a selector for the content you need—before capturing. For lazy-loaded pages, trigger the relevant loading behavior and allow updates to complete. Then inspect representative screenshots in the deployment environment; page behavior can vary with browser version, timing, and content.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Screenshot stops at the viewport Used Selenium’s ordinary screenshot method, which is not a portable full-document capture. Use Firefox’s full-page API or implement the Chromium CDP route.
Firefox screenshot file is missing The output path could not be written, or the file method returned False. Check the Boolean result, confirm the parent directory exists and is writable, and use a PNG path.
Top of the page is captured but later content is absent Content was not rendered or lazy-loaded before the screenshot. Wait for the required content; for lazy material, trigger loading and allow the page to update before capture.
CDP command fails or rejects parameters The command shape does not match the protocol supported by the installed browser and Selenium combination. Check the deployed versions and their supported CDP protocol, then adjust and validate the command parameters.
Repeated header or overlay appears down the stitched image A sticky or fixed element was included in each viewport slice. Handle that element explicitly in the stitching process and inspect slice overlap.
Screenshot differs between runs The page’s rendered state or dynamic content changed before capture. Wait on the specific content needed and validate output on representative pages in the target environment.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

There is no established benchmark here for speed, image quality, or reliability across these methods. Operationally, Firefox’s direct API avoids writing a stitching pipeline when Firefox meets your browser requirements. CDP keeps a Chromium workflow but adds browser-protocol coupling that should be version-checked. Stitching adds scrolling, waiting, and image-combination work, and can require special handling for long pages and persistent UI.

All three methods run a browser workflow that you must provision and maintain. For a service-based alternative that avoids managing that browser setup, see ScreenshotNeo below. Its published pricing is listed separately from the cost of running your own Selenium infrastructure.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. Cookie/consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

For Python, the request pattern is:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. The example writes the response body to a file; use the output format you request and handle API errors in production before treating a response as an image.

FAQ

Does Selenium have a full-page screenshot method for every browser?

No. The direct full-document methods described here are Firefox WebDriver APIs. Chromium full-page capture typically uses CDP, which is browser-specific.

Can I use Firefox’s full-page API to get base64 output?

Yes. The Firefox API exposes get_full_page_screenshot_as_base64() as well as a PNG-bytes method.
