For most Windows users who want a free scrolling screenshot tool, start with ShareX. It combines scrolling capture with annotation, OCR, recording, automation, and upload options. Choose Snagit if you create polished documentation and need step capture and redaction; choose PicPick for an approachable personal-use toolkit that also includes recording and design utilities. For the occasional webpage, a browser’s full-page capture may be enough.
There is no published, independently verified head-to-head accuracy score for these tools. Scrolling capture stitches content as a window or page moves, so results depend on how the target scrolls. A feature label does not guarantee a flawless capture of every app, PDF, dynamic page, or nested panel.
Which scrolling screenshot tool should you choose?
| Tool | Best fit | What stands out | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ShareX | Free, open-source power-user workflow | Scrolling capture, recording, OCR, annotation, configurable after-capture tasks, and uploads. ShareX official site | Its broad feature set makes it capable, but there is no cited independent stitching-accuracy benchmark for every application. |
| Snagit | Professional guides and documentation | Scrolling capture, AI Step Capture, and Smart Redact. TechSmith Snagit | TechSmith describes its feature; that does not establish universal success across all windows and webpages. |
| PicPick | Personal-use all-rounder | Scrolling pages, recording, annotation, cloud destinations, hotkeys, and design utilities. PicPick features | Free for personal, non-commercial use; business or commercial use requires a license. It is Windows-only and lists support from Vista through Windows 11. PicPick FAQ |
| Browser or Windows tools | Occasional basic captures without a dedicated suite | Windows shortcuts and Snipping Tool for ordinary captures; Edge and Firefox for full-page webpages; Chrome can print a page to PDF or use an extension. Tom’s Hardware Windows screenshot guide and Tom’s Hardware full-page screenshot guide | These are convenient for simple cases, but lack the same dedicated combination of app capture, annotation, OCR, automation, and uploads. |
| Greenshot | Legacy or narrowly compatible workflow | Free, open-source capture with annotation and export. | Its documented scrolling mode is tied to websites opened in Internet Explorer, so it is not a general recommendation for modern scrolling capture. Greenshot |
ShareX is the strongest free/open-source recommendation when you want more than a single long image. Snagit is a better match when the job is creating repeatable instructions and cleaning up sensitive details. PicPick suits someone who wants capture plus design and recording tools for personal work. For one-off web pages, begin with the browser before installing software.
What makes scrolling capture succeed or fail?
A scrolling screenshot is not simply a taller version of an ordinary screenshot. The tool captures visible sections while moving through a page or window, then combines them. That means it must detect the scrollable area and align successive frames. Sticky headers, animation, lazy-loaded content, delayed updates, or more than one scrollable panel can complicate that process.
- Webpages: Browser-native full-page capture can be the simplest path when the page is a standard document. Dynamic layouts and content loaded only during scrolling can still affect what appears.
- PDFs: A PDF viewer may scroll within its own pane, and page boundaries can make a stitched image less useful than the original document or a PDF export.
- Desktop applications: Scrolling capture depends on how the application exposes its scrollable content. A tool that works on a browser page may not work identically in a settings panel or document editor.
- Nested panels: If the pointer is over a list or inner pane inside a larger window, the wrong region may scroll. Confirm which panel is active before starting.
For a critical capture, inspect the result rather than assuming the tool stitched it correctly. Look for repeated or missing lines, jumps, cut-off edges, frozen headers appearing in the middle, and content that loaded after the capture passed it.

ShareX: the best free choice for power users
ShareX describes itself as a free, open-source Windows screenshot tool with screen capture, screen recording, file sharing, and productivity features. Its scrolling capture is part of a wider workflow: after a capture, configurable tasks can save, copy, open the editor, run OCR, or upload the result. The editor includes arrows, text, numbered steps, blur, pixelation, highlighting, crop, and cut-out tools. See ShareX’s official feature list.
When ShareX is a good fit
- You want a no-cost, open-source Windows tool and are comfortable configuring a detailed application.
- You regularly need to annotate captures, extract text with OCR, or route results through automated after-capture tasks.
- You also need ordinary screenshots, screen recording, or file sharing in the same tool.
Where to be cautious
ShareX’s breadth is an advantage if you will use those controls, but it can be more than needed for an occasional full-page webpage image. As with any stitching-based method, validate the capture on complex layouts and application windows. Do not treat a successful capture of one target as proof that all nested scroll regions will behave the same way.
Snagit: best suited to professional documentation
TechSmith lists “Scrolling Capture” for long, scrolling windows or webpages, alongside AI Step Capture and Smart Redact. Those features make Snagit a natural candidate for support writers, trainers, and product-documentation authors who need to show a process and prepare captures for readers. Review TechSmith’s Snagit feature page.

The documentation use case is distinct from simply saving a long page. Step Capture can help turn a workflow into a visual guide, while Smart Redact is relevant when a capture contains information that should not be shown. Review redactions before publishing; a feature name alone should not replace a privacy check. TechSmith’s page does not provide an independently verified success rate across every app, so choose it for the stated workflow features, not on a guarantee that every scrollable target will stitch perfectly.
PicPick: a Windows all-rounder for personal use
PicPick’s feature page lists full-screen, active-window, scrolling-page, fixed-region, and freehand capture; hotkeys; autosave; multi-monitor support; recording with system audio and microphone; annotation and effects; cloud destinations; and design utilities. That mix makes it useful if screenshots are only one part of your everyday visual work. PicPick features.
Licensing matters: PicPick says it is free for personal, non-commercial use, with a license required for business or commercial use. Its FAQ identifies it as Windows-only and says it supports Windows Vista through Windows 11. Check the current license terms for your use before deploying it in a workplace. PicPick FAQ.

Use Windows shortcuts for ordinary captures
Windows shortcuts are useful for a region, active window, or screen, but they are not the same as stitching a long scrollable page. Tom’s Hardware lists Print Screen, Windows+Print Screen, Alt+Print Screen, and Windows+Shift+S for Snipping Tool in Windows 10 and 11. Windows screenshot shortcuts.

For an occasional webpage, browser tools can avoid installing a desktop capture suite. Tom’s Hardware describes Edge’s “Capture full page,” Firefox’s “Save full page,” Chrome’s print-to-PDF route, and a Chrome extension option for a full-page image. Labels and availability can change by browser version, so consult the current browser interface if a named command is absent. Full-page browser capture guide.
Prefer a PDF when you need selectable text, printing, or a document-like record. Prefer an image when the destination needs a single visual asset. A browser full-page image is generally a webpage solution, not a substitute for capturing arbitrary desktop-app windows.

How to choose based on your actual capture job
- Long webpage, occasional use: Try the browser’s built-in full-page capture first.
- Many captures plus OCR, annotation, uploads, or automation: Start with ShareX.
- Training or support documentation: Consider Snagit for scrolling capture, step capture, and redaction features.
- Personal work spanning screenshots, recording, and design: Consider PicPick, while respecting its commercial-use licensing.
- Legacy Internet Explorer workflow: Greenshot may be relevant if its documented scrolling mode matches that environment; do not assume it is a modern all-purpose option.
Practical capture checklist
- Open the page, PDF, or app and identify the scrollable area you actually want. For nested panes, place focus in the intended panel.
- Wait for visible content to settle. If the page loads images or rows during scrolling, allow them to appear before capture where possible.
- Use the tool’s scrolling or full-page mode rather than taking a series of unrelated manual screenshots when you need one continuous image.
- Inspect the output at the seams. Check for duplicated lines, gaps, overlap, cut-off content, or a fixed element repeated unexpectedly.
- Annotate or redact only after confirming that the capture includes the right material; then check the final exported file before sharing it.
Troubleshooting scrolling screenshots
The capture stops before the bottom
The target may not expose the expected scroll area, or the tool may have reached the end of the region it detected. Confirm that the page or panel can scroll manually, then try the app’s own full-page option for a webpage or capture a smaller section. If the content is a PDF, exporting or printing the PDF may preserve the document better than stitching its viewer.
The image has gaps, overlaps, or repeated content
Changing page elements, sticky headers, animation, or delayed loading can make adjacent frames difficult to align. Let the page settle, reduce motion if the site offers that setting, and retry. If the defect remains, capture smaller sections or use a browser-native full-page method for a webpage.
The wrong panel scrolls
Nested areas can compete for scroll input. Click or position the pointer in the desired panel first, and verify that manual scrolling moves that area. If the application does not expose it reliably to the capture tool, use a different capture method or save the content from the app itself.
The result is blank or misses late-loading content
Wait for the page or document to finish loading, then retry. Content that appears only after scrolling may not exist in the page at the instant the capture starts. For a webpage, browser full-page capture may handle it differently; inspect the exported image rather than assuming completeness.

The output is too long or hard to share
Use a PDF or the original document when readers need to search, print, or select text. If an image is required, consider capturing logical sections rather than creating one extremely tall file, and use annotation or cropping to make the relevant material clear.
ScreenshotNeo alternative for clean webpage captures
For developers who need website screenshots rather than desktop-app stitching, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed.
