ScreenshotNeo is the first API to try if you want a screenshot service with clean captures and clear billing for failed pages; its API also supports configurable waits. For readiness controls specifically documented by vendors, ScreenshotOne offers navigation, delay, and selector waits, while Browserless documents selector, function, timeout, and event preconditions. Those options mean different things: no wait condition guarantees that every animation or asynchronous update has visually settled.

This guide compares the documented readiness signals, shows how to use them, and explains what to check when a capture is early or times out. The vendor documentation reviewed was accessed October 3, 2026; options can change. The comparison is about documented functionality, not measured speed, reliability, or image quality.

What a JavaScript rendering wait actually does

A screenshot API loads a page in a browser and captures it. A wait option tells the browser when to proceed with that capture. The key question is not whether an API “waits for JavaScript,” but what condition it waits for:

  • Navigation lifecycle or network state: wait for a browser load event or for network activity to become idle.
  • Elapsed time: pause for a fixed duration, regardless of whether the content is ready.
  • DOM condition: wait for a selector to appear, become visible, or meet another defined state.
  • Custom function or event: wait for a page-specific signal that represents readiness.

These signals are not interchangeable. A DOM element can exist but be hidden; a network can go quiet before a delayed update runs; and a fixed pause can be either too short or unnecessarily long. Pick the narrowest condition that corresponds to the content you need.

Which screenshot APIs document JavaScript readiness waits?

API Documented readiness controls Capture/request notes What the documentation does not establish
ScreenshotNeo Wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle; supports custom JavaScript and other browser controls. GET request to the screenshot endpoint; supports image or PDF output, full-page and element capture. No comparative speed or reliability result is established here.
ScreenshotOne wait_until: load, domcontentloaded, networkidle0, or networkidle2; also delay, wait_for_selector, and a post-script navigation wait via scripts_wait_until. Options are passed as query parameters. Selector waits check DOM presence, not necessarily visibility. No cross-provider performance result is established.
Browserless Shared request preconditions support timeouts, selectors, functions, and events. Selector waits can specify visible or hidden state and a timeout. Screenshot requests use a JSON body and inherit shared request configuration; supports full-page and selector capture. No cross-provider performance result is established.
Urlbox Its CLI documentation describes a delay after load and selector capture. The documentation reviewed did not fully establish a directly comparable custom JavaScript readiness interface. Check the current options page for the precise behavior and syntax you need. Do not assume function- or event-wait parity with Browserless.

For ScreenshotNeo details, see ScreenshotNeo. Vendor behavior and option syntax should be checked in the linked documentation before deployment.

How to choose a wait condition

Use a navigation condition for broad page readiness

Navigation waits describe a browser lifecycle or network state, not whether a particular component rendered correctly. ScreenshotOne documents load and domcontentloaded as lifecycle choices. Its networkidle0 and networkidle2 options use a 500 ms observation window: the former allows no active network connections during that interval, and the latter allows up to two. Long-lived requests can make network-idle waits a poor fit for pages with streaming or persistent connections.

Use a selector when a specific element marks readiness

A selector is often the clearest signal for client-rendered content: for example, a chart container or a report heading. Check whether the API waits for presence or visibility. ScreenshotOne documents DOM presence; its documentation also says multiple selectors use an at-least-one behavior by default, with an option to require a count. If the same selector is already the screenshot target, its wait_for_selector option is not effective and will not be used.

Browserless documents selector visibility controls as well as timeout behavior. Its documentation says an unmet selector can result in a non-200 error. Treat a timeout as useful diagnostic information: it may mean the page failed to load, the selector is wrong, or the condition is not reachable in that page state.

Use a fixed delay only when elapsed time is the requirement

A delay does not inspect page content. ScreenshotOne documents delay in seconds; Browserless documents waitForTimeout in milliseconds. A fixed pause is simple for known, stable transitions, but variable server and network timing can make it unreliable. Prefer a content condition when one is available.

Use a custom function or event for application-specific readiness

Browserless documents functions and events among its shared waiting preconditions. They can express a page-specific signal more precisely than a generic delay, but require a condition the page or request configuration can evaluate. ScreenshotOne’s scripts_wait_until is a post-script navigation wait control; it has no wait by default and is not a promise that every asynchronous task has completed.

ScreenshotOne: query parameters

Example using a selector wait and a navigation condition. The URL below is illustrative; use the current parameter syntax and authentication requirements from ScreenshotOne’s official options documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotone.com/take"
  --data-urlencode "access_key=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY"
  --data-urlencode "url=https://example.com"
  --data-urlencode "wait_until=networkidle2"
  --data-urlencode "wait_for_selector=.report-ready"
  -o screenshot.png

ScreenshotOne documents the wait options, but the URL and authentication details in a working request should be verified against its current API documentation.

Browserless: JSON configuration

Browserless applies its shared request configuration to screenshot requests. Its docs show selector waits with a timeout and describe an error response when the selector does not appear in time. Use the current endpoint and authentication format for your Browserless account.

{
  "url": "https://example.com",
  "options": {
    "waitForSelector": {
      "selector": ".report-ready",
      "timeout": 5000,
      "visible": true
    },
    "fullPage": true
  }
}

The 5,000 ms value is an example timeout documented by Browserless, not a performance recommendation.

Full-page and element capture are separate from readiness

A wait tells the browser when to capture; capture scope tells it what to include. Decide these independently:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Full page: useful for long reports and article pages, but lazy-loaded content may require scrolling or a provider’s full-page handling.
  • Element: useful when only a chart, card, or report panel matters. Ensure the target exists and is in the intended state before capture.
  • Viewport: captures only the visible browser area. A page may be ready while content below the fold remains outside the image.

Browserless documents full-page and selector capture. ScreenshotOne’s full-page guidance cautions that motion reduction is best-effort. Animations, canvas rendering, and animated images can still vary, so a readiness signal does not guarantee pixel-identical results.

Common wait failures and how to fix them

The screenshot is blank or missing the client-rendered section

  • Wait for the section’s selector rather than only for a navigation event.
  • Confirm the selector matches the live page and is not scoped to a different frame or state.
  • If the target is lazy-loaded, use full-page behavior or otherwise trigger the content to load before capture.

A selector wait times out

  • Check whether the element is actually inserted into the DOM on the requested URL and viewport.
  • Determine whether the provider expects presence or visibility; hidden elements do not satisfy a visible-state wait.
  • Increase the timeout only if the page legitimately needs more time. If the condition never occurs, a longer timeout merely delays the error.

Network idle never occurs

Pages with persistent or recurring requests may not reach network idle. Try a selector for the relevant content, or use a bounded delay if the transition is known and predictable.

The page looks different between captures

Dynamic content, animations, canvases, and animated images may continue changing after a wait condition passes. Where repeatability matters, use an application-specific readiness signal and minimize motion if the provider supports it; do not assume motion controls eliminate every visual difference.

Reliability, performance, and cost considerations

The documentation comparison establishes available controls, not which service is fastest or most reliable. A meaningful comparison would need the same pages, viewport, browser conditions, readiness rule, timeout, and output format, with the method and test date reported. No such comparative test is claimed here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operationally, choose a bounded timeout and a wait condition that reflects the page. A generic long delay can raise latency without making the result more correct; a strict selector can fail when page markup changes. Consider caching when the page is stable, but verify whether cached output suits the freshness requirement. Current pricing, quotas, regional availability, and support terms are not established by the documentation used for this feature comparison; check vendors directly before choosing on those grounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a JavaScript wait guarantee that a screenshot is fully settled?

No. It indicates that a particular lifecycle, network, selector, function, event, or time condition was met. Animations and asynchronous visual changes can continue afterward.

Is ScreenshotOne’s selector wait a visibility check?

Its documented selector wait checks DOM presence, which does not necessarily mean the element is visible.

Which service is fastest?

The documented options do not establish a speed winner; that requires a controlled comparison on the pages and settings you use.
