OBS is free, open-source and configurable, but you must assign sources to tracks yourself. Camtasia combines recording and editing, and TechSmith documents separate tracks for screen, camera, system audio and microphone. Descript can capture computer audio during screen recording, but the documentation reviewed does not establish that its ordinary screen-recording workflow saves each source as a separate track.
What multitrack audio means in a screen recording
A screen recorder has multitrack audio when it preserves independent audio sources as selectable tracks in the recording or editable project. That lets you rebalance, mute, replace or clean your narration separately from system or application audio.
Recording both your microphone and computer sound is not enough if the software mixes them into one track. Before choosing a tool, check which sources can be separated, where you assign them, and whether the editing workflow keeps those tracks independent.

OBS Studio: configurable track control
The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as free and open-source recording and live-streaming software for Windows, macOS and Linux. To record separate audio sources, open Audio Mixer → Advanced Audio Properties, assign each source to the tracks you want, then go to Settings → Output and enable those recording tracks. The guide’s example uses track 1 for ordinary playback and tracks 2–6 for separation; your sources will not be isolated automatically unless you configure them.

There is a playback catch. The OBS Project’s Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide, dated July 14, 2023, warns: “all standard video players will only play back one audio track at a time.” It recommends sending all audio sources to track 1 if you do not plan to process the recording in an editor. You can retain additional isolated tracks as well, then use a compatible editor to work with them.

Camtasia: recording and editing together
TechSmith says Camtasia can record screen, camera, system audio and microphone on separate tracks, then let you adjust those elements independently during editing. Its feature page also advertises 4K screen capture. That integrated workflow may suit you if you want to make recording and editing adjustments in the same product rather than configure a separate capture workflow and post-production editor.

Descript: audio capture is not proof of track separation
Descript’s help documentation covers capturing system-wide computer audio in its desktop recorder when screen recording is enabled, and capturing audio from a particular browser tab in its web recorder. Those details show that audio can be captured; they do not confirm that each source is saved on its own track in a normal screen recording.

Descript also describes its Rooms feature as multitrack recording, but that is a remote-recording workflow. Do not treat it as confirmation of separate system-audio and microphone tracks for ordinary screen capture.

- Choose OBS Studio if you want a free, open-source tool and are willing to configure source-to-track assignments and select output tracks yourself.
- Choose Camtasia if you want the documented screen, camera, microphone and system-audio tracks within an integrated recording-and-editing product.
- Consider Descript for audio capture, not confirmed screen-recording isolation. The documentation reviewed establishes system or browser-tab audio capture, not separate tracks for the ordinary screen recorder.
For any option, make a short test recording and open it in the editor you expect to use. Confirm that the microphone and computer audio appear as independently selectable tracks before recording a full project.

Common multitrack problems and fixes
The recording seems to be missing audio
A basic player may be playing only one audio track. Open the file in a compatible editor and inspect its tracks. In OBS, you can also route a mix of all sources to track 1 for simple playback while retaining isolated sources on other tracks.
The microphone and computer audio are still mixed together
Check whether your software saves separate tracks or only captures multiple sources. In OBS, inspect Advanced Audio Properties and assign each source to the intended recording tracks, then verify the selected tracks under Settings → Output.
A source is missing from an OBS recording
Check both parts of the setup: the source’s track assignment in Advanced Audio Properties and the enabled recording tracks in Settings → Output. Selecting a track for a source does not by itself ensure that track is enabled in the output.

You need to edit narration separately but your recorder offers capture only
Capture is not the same as isolation. Confirm that the resulting recording or project exposes separate source tracks. If the workflow does not establish that, use a recorder with documented track assignment, such as OBS or Camtasia, and verify the result in an editor.
