OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop are the best-documented starting points for Kick streamers who want to go live and record locally. Kick supports both: OBS uses a custom server URL and stream key, while Streamlabs Desktop offers a Kick account connection and documents recording controls such as selective recording, replay buffer, multitrack audio, and local-file settings. Choose based on the setup and recording workflow you need—not an assumed performance ranking, since that depends on your computer and settings.

Which screen recorder should a Kick streamer choose?

Software Kick setup Documented recording workflow Best fit
OBS Studio Enter Kick’s server URL and stream key in the custom streaming service settings. The reviewed Kick material confirms OBS support and explains connecting it. It does not compare OBS recording performance across computers. Streamers who want Kick’s documented custom-service setup in OBS and are comfortable configuring the encoder themselves.
Streamlabs Desktop Connect a Kick account through the documented account-connection flow. Streamlabs documents selective recording, replay buffer/instant replay, up to six audio tracks, and configurable recording destination, format, resolution, and encoder. Streamers who want those recording controls surfaced in a documented desktop workflow.
XSplit or MELD Kick lists both among supported streaming applications. Equivalent current recording details were not established in the reviewed official material. Creators who already use either application; compare its current recording settings before committing to a workflow.

The available documentation supports a feature-and-setup comparison, not a claim that one application produces smoother streams or recordings on every PC. Streamlabs’ performance advice is vendor guidance; test your own hardware before a long broadcast.

Kick’s streaming limits to set before you record

Kick’s May 2026 guidance specifies these livestream output limits. They apply to the stream sent to Kick, not necessarily to the resolution or format of a separate local recording.

Setting Kick’s published constraint Practical implication
Video codec H.264/x264 Do not select H.265 for the Kick output.
Rate control CBR Do not use VBR for the Kick output. Kick explains: “CBR keeps your stream’s data rate steady.”
Bitrate Maximum 8,000 kbps Stay at or below the cap, and lower it if your upload connection cannot sustain it.
Resolution Maximum 1920×1080 Kick’s documented maximum is Full HD; a higher local recording resolution does not raise the stream cap.
Frame rate Maximum 60 fps Choose 60 fps or lower for the Kick output.
Audio Stereo, up to 48 kHz Keep the stream audio within these published limits.

Kick’s May 22, 2026 setup guide also advises keeping bitrate within your connection’s upload capacity. Its May 6, 2026 troubleshooting guidance says older software versions can stop connecting as Kick infrastructure changes, so keep your encoder current. Platform requirements can change; consult Kick’s streaming setup guide and connection troubleshooting guide if a setting is rejected.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Set up OBS Studio for Kick and local recording

  1. Get the connection details. In your Kick creator dashboard, locate the server URL and stream key for your channel. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  2. Connect OBS to Kick. In OBS, open Settings, then Stream. Choose the custom streaming service option and enter the server URL and stream key from Kick. Menu wording can vary by OBS version.
  3. Configure the Kick output. Set the stream encoder to H.264, rate control to CBR, resolution no higher than 1920×1080, frame rate no higher than 60 fps, and bitrate no higher than 8,000 kbps. Keep stereo audio at or below 48 kHz. If your upload capacity is limited, start below the maximum bitrate.
  4. Choose local recording settings. In OBS recording/output settings, choose a destination with enough free space and a recording format and encoder that suit your editing workflow. Keep in mind these local-file choices are separate from Kick’s stream-output limits; the reviewed Kick material does not prescribe a particular local recording format or encoder.
  5. Run a short test. Record and, if possible, stream briefly. Check that video and audio are present, the file saves where expected, and your computer and connection remain stable before relying on a long session.

Set up Streamlabs Desktop for Kick and recording

  1. Connect your Kick account. Open Streamlabs Desktop and use its Kick account connection flow. Follow the account authorization prompts rather than copying OBS’s custom server-and-key procedure.
  2. Set a compliant stream output. Confirm H.264, CBR, a maximum of 8,000 kbps, 1920×1080, 60 fps, and stereo audio up to 48 kHz for the Kick stream. Lower settings as needed for your upload speed and computer.
  3. Choose recording controls. Streamlabs documents selective recording, replay buffer/instant replay, and audio inputs assigned across up to six tracks. Enable only the options you need, then confirm which sources and audio tracks are included in the resulting file.
  4. Set the local recording destination and encoding. Configure the recording path, format, resolution, and encoder in Streamlabs’ recording settings. The exact best choice depends on editing needs, storage space, and system capacity.
  5. Test simultaneous streaming and recording. Streamlabs cautions that recording-only settings may need adjustment when you record and stream at the same time. Monitor performance and make a short test first; if the computer struggles, reduce the load or adjust the recording settings.

These recording controls are described in Streamlabs’ recording guide, updated September 22, 2026. They should not be read as proof that equivalent workflows are impossible in OBS or through its current configurations.

Local recording, Kick VODs, and storage

A local recording and a Kick VOD are different copies with different uses. Kick says an OBS stream VOD is saved to your channel page after the stream ends. A local recording is a file saved to a location you select in your recording software; Streamlabs documents controls for that path and related file settings.

Use a local recording if you want a file to edit, repurpose, or retain independently. Check available drive space before a long session: file size depends on recording settings and duration, so there is no single storage estimate that fits every setup. An external SSD is an optional destination, not a requirement; choose storage based on your own recording format, quality, retention period, and free space.

Troubleshoot connection, rejected settings, and lag

  • Encoder will not connect: Check that the stream key is current and correctly entered. If you reset the key in Kick, update it in OBS or use the appropriate account reconnection flow in Streamlabs. Keep the key private.
  • Kick rejects the stream or settings: Verify H.264, CBR, bitrate at or below 8,000 kbps, resolution at or below 1920×1080, frame rate at or below 60 fps, and stereo audio at or below 48 kHz. Make sure the selected settings are for the Kick output, not just local recording.
  • Connection fails despite correct settings: Update OBS or Streamlabs. Kick also advises checking whether antivirus, firewall, or network restrictions are blocking the connection.
  • Stream or recording lags: Reduce the load by lowering output settings, and test streaming and recording separately to see whether simultaneous encoding is the issue. Keep bitrate within upload capacity; the platform maximum is not a recommended target for every connection.
  • Recording is missing, incomplete, or hard to edit: Confirm the recording destination, available disk space, format, selected audio tracks, and whether selective recording excludes sources you expected to capture. Make a brief test file after changing settings.

For Kick-specific connection checks, use its troubleshooting instructions. For Streamlabs recording paths and options, consult the Streamlabs recording guide.
