For most Chromebook users, the built-in ChromeOS Screen Capture is the best place to start: it records the full screen, a window, or a selected area, with options for camera and audio. Choose Google Screencast when you want to trim a lesson or demo and work with its transcript tools; choose Loom’s Chrome extension when hosted sharing and collaboration matter. Loom’s desktop app does not run on Chromebook OS.
Best Chromebook screen recorders at a glance
| Option | Best for | What it offers | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChromeOS Screen Capture | Quick recordings saved locally | Full-screen, window, and partial-screen recording; camera and audio settings; WebM or GIF for partial recordings | Files go to Downloads by default. It is a basic capture utility rather than a hosted collaboration and editing suite. |
| Google Screencast | Lessons and demonstrations that need basic editing or transcripts | Trim, mute, title overlays, searchable transcript, transcript navigation, and translation | Requires ChromeOS 104 or later; a school or work administrator can disable it. Device and language support affect transcription. |
| Loom Chrome extension | Browser-based recording and hosted link sharing | Browser recording with screen and camera choices, plus hosted sharing and editing features | The extension is distinct from Loom’s desktop app, which is not Chromebook-compatible. Starter plan limits may constrain recording length and video count. |
These tools serve different workflows rather than making one universal choice: first decide what you need to capture and whether the file should stay local or be shared from a hosted service.
Use ChromeOS Screen Capture for a quick local recording
Start and choose what to capture
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. On the shelf, you can also open Screen Capture.
- Select Screen record.
- Choose full screen, a window, or a partial area, depending on what you want viewers to see.
- Open Settings to choose the camera and audio inputs available for the recording.
- Start the recording. To stop, use the recording control on the shelf or press Search + Shift + X.
Choose a useful format and locate the file
In the documented partial-screen workflow, you can save a video as WebM or choose GIF. GIF does not include audio or video input, so use a video recording if you need narration or a camera view. Recordings save to Downloads by default; Screen Capture settings let you choose another destination.
Screen Capture suits quick demonstrations and clips that you will manage as files yourself. If you need transcript navigation or editing tools, Screencast is a better fit; if link-based hosted sharing is central, consider Loom’s extension.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Google Screencast for lessons and demos
Screencast is a separate ChromeOS app, available on devices with Chrome version 104 or later. Its tools include trimming, muting, title overlays, and a transcript that can be searched, navigated, and translated. That combination can be helpful for instructional recordings that viewers may revisit or search.
Check availability and transcript handling
- If Screencast is missing on a school or work Chromebook, an administrator may have disabled it.
- The device language must be supported to create a recording with transcription. Depending on the device and language, transcription may be processed on the device or sent to Google.
- For a managed account, a shared recording is visible only to people in the managed domain who have the link. For a personal account, recordings shared by link are visible to anyone with the link.
Before recording sensitive material, check the account type and sharing audience. A link is not equally private across personal and managed accounts.

Consider Loom’s Chrome extension for hosted sharing
Loom’s Chrome extension records in the browser and offers full-screen, window, current-tab, and camera-only choices. Atlassian’s support documentation notes that camera-bubble behavior outside the browser and PDF recording have limitations. Loom’s Chromebook product page describes screen/audio and camera recording, editing, and hosted link sharing; those are extension-based browser workflows, not proof that Loom’s desktop app runs on ChromeOS.
Loom’s desktop app is available for Mac and Windows, not Chromebook OS. If you are considering Loom, install and use the Chrome extension rather than expecting the desktop software to work on your Chromebook.

Check current Starter limits before relying on them
Loom’s pricing page currently lists Starter as free, with up to 25 videos per member and a five-minute limit per screen recording; Business lists unlimited recording time. These are vendor plan terms, accessed in 2026, and can change, so confirm the current limits on Loom’s pricing page before choosing a plan or building a workflow around them.
How to choose the right option
- Choose Screen Capture when you want to record a specific area, window, or entire display and keep a straightforward local file.
- Choose Screencast when you are making a lesson or demo and will benefit from trim, mute, overlays, or transcript tools, provided the app is available for your device and account.
- Choose Loom’s extension when browser-based recording and hosted link sharing matter more than a simple local-file workflow, and its current plan limits suit your needs.
Frequently encountered recording and sharing problems
The Screen Capture shortcut does not open recording
Use the shelf’s Screen Capture control if the keyboard shortcut is inconvenient or the keyboard layout differs. Confirm that you selected Screen record, not screenshot capture.

Open Screen Capture’s settings before recording and select the available camera and audio inputs you intend to use. Do not choose GIF when you need audio or video input; GIF does not capture either.
The recording is not in the expected folder
Check Downloads first, which is the default destination. If you previously changed the destination in capture settings, look in the selected folder instead.

Screencast is missing or transcript features are unavailable
Check that the device has Chrome version 104 or later. On a managed school or work device, ask the administrator whether Screencast is disabled. Supported device and language settings affect transcription; the device language must be supported to create a recording.
A shared recording is visible to the wrong audience
Check whether you are using a personal or managed account before sharing. Personal Screencast recordings shared by link can be seen by anyone with the link; managed-account recordings are restricted to people in the managed domain who have the link.
Or let it run in the cloud

You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
