For automated Playwright tests, start with Playwright Test’s built-in video recording. It records at test scope, lets you record every test or retain only useful failures, and fits naturally into CI artifacts. For a scripted browser demonstration, Playwright CLI’s WebM recording is the better-supported starting point because it can add chapter cards and action callouts. Choose OBS Studio when you need a composed desktop scene or custom audio mix, and choose Loom for a human-led walkthrough that must be shared quickly. None of these choices is a universal quality winner: the available documentation describes features, not independent 2026 benchmarks.
Choose by the job you need to solve
“Screen recording for browser automation” covers two different workflows. A QA engineer usually needs a per-test artifact that appears when a test fails. A technical educator or product team usually needs a readable walkthrough with a cursor, narration, chapters, or callouts. The recorder that is ideal for one workflow can be awkward for the other.

Record Playwright tests with Playwright Test
Playwright documentation states, “With Playwright you can record videos for your tests.” Video is off by default. Enable it in the test configuration and select the retention policy that matches your storage budget and debugging needs.
Record every test

});Use this mode when you are developing a new flow, auditing a large visual change, or need a complete visual archive. In CI, recording every passing test can create substantially more artifacts than retaining failures, so set an explicit retention policy before enabling it on every job.
Keep videos only for failures

});This is the practical default for many regression suites: successful tests do not leave permanent video files, while a failed test keeps its recording for diagnosis. Make sure your CI system uploads the test-results directory (or the directory your runner is configured to use) after the test process finishes.
Record on the first retry

});This mode avoids recording the initial attempt while still capturing the first retry, which is useful when a retry provides the clearest evidence of a flaky failure. The video is saved when the browser context closes. A test that crashes before normal cleanup, or a custom fixture that keeps a context open, can therefore produce no finalized video. Treat context closure as part of your artifact lifecycle.
Capture and publish the artifact reliably
- Set one of the video modes in the
usesection of your Playwright configuration. - Run the suite locally first and confirm that the test-results output contains a video after the test completes.
- Configure CI to collect that output after the test command, including on failure.
- Keep trace files as well when you need DOM, network, console, and action details; a video is visual evidence, not an interactive debugging record.
Use Playwright CLI for explanatory browser videos
Playwright CLI documentation describes WebM session recording aimed at demos, documentation, bug reports, and agent-session review. Its chapter cards and action callouts are designed to explain what the browser is doing, rather than merely prove that a test failed. Use this route when the audience needs a narrated or step-by-step visual story.

When CLI recording is a better fit
- You are running a deliberately scripted session rather than hundreds of independent test cases.
- Viewers need chapter boundaries or labels for important actions.
- You want a configurable recording size for documentation or review.
- The output will be watched by people who do not need Playwright’s trace inspection tools.
Keep the distinction clear: a video shows pixels and timing; a trace contains DOM snapshots, network activity, console information, and action data. For a failure investigation, retain the trace even when you also publish the video.
Where OBS Studio fits
OBS supports display and window capture, browser sources, scenes, audio mixing, hotkeys, and scripts or plugins. That makes it useful when the browser is one layer in a finished production: for example, a browser window beside a webcam, a terminal, and a narration track.
OBS also documents a --startrecording launch parameter. Starting a recording from a command does not, by itself, connect the recording to a particular Playwright test, assertion, retry, or failure. If you use OBS around automation, you must design that orchestration yourself and decide how to name, stop, and retain files. This can work for a controlled demo machine, but it is a weaker fit than Playwright’s per-test artifact model for unattended CI.
Where Loom fits
Loom’s cited browser-recorder use case is tutorials and walkthroughs. It is a reasonable choice when a person is driving the browser and the priority is quick sharing. The available product evidence does not establish unattended automation support, test-level triggers, or per-test retention. Do not select it as a test artifact recorder without verifying those requirements in the edition and region you will deploy.

Recording controls that matter in automation
Trigger and scope
Decide whether recording starts for every test, only a retry, only failures, or one explicitly scripted session. Test-scoped capture gives you an unambiguous relationship between a file and a test. Desktop capture gives you a broader scene but requires your own correlation scheme.
Lifecycle and retention
Plan for the point at which a file becomes valid. Playwright finalizes video when the browser context closes, so close contexts and collect artifacts after the runner has completed cleanup. In CI, upload failure artifacts even when the test command exits non-zero.
Format and audience
Playwright Test’s video mode is intended as a test artifact. Playwright CLI documents WebM for sessions. Select a format and player your CI system, documentation site, and reviewers can all handle; do not convert files merely to compensate for a missing artifact policy.
Annotations and diagnostics
Use CLI chapters and action callouts for explanation. Use traces for inspection. If a reviewer must see the complete desktop context, OBS scenes may be worth the extra orchestration.

Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
No independent side-by-side measurements establish CPU use, dropped frames, capture quality, setup time, or a universal value winner for these tools in 2026. Measure in your own browser matrix if those constraints are material.
- Storage: Recording every test creates more artifacts than retaining failures. Set retention deliberately and expire old CI artifacts.
- Failure diagnosis: Pair a retained video with a trace when you need both visual context and inspectable browser state.
- Parallelism: Give each worker an isolated artifact path or rely on the runner’s test-specific directories so simultaneous tests do not overwrite files.
- Reproducibility: Keep viewport, browser project, and test data stable; a video cannot explain a difference caused by an unrecorded environment change.
- Desktop capture: OBS records what is visible in its selected source. A minimized, occluded, or changed window can produce an incomplete demonstration unless the scene is controlled.
Common problems and fixes
No video appears after a failed test
Check that a video mode is enabled, that the browser context reached closure, and that CI collects artifacts after the test process. A crash or premature process termination can prevent finalization.
Passing tests fill the artifact store
Replace video: 'on' with video: 'retain-on-failure', or use video: 'on-first-retry' when retry evidence is sufficient.
The video shows what happened but not why
Publish the corresponding Playwright trace. Video does not contain the trace’s DOM snapshots, network, console, and action information.

OBS captures the wrong window or scene
Verify the selected display or window source, scene transitions, and hotkey or script timing. The documented launch flag starts recording; it does not verify that the intended browser source is visible.
A Loom walkthrough cannot run unattended
Recheck the requirement. The cited Loom material supports browser tutorials and walkthroughs, not an established CI artifact workflow. Use Playwright Test for unattended test evidence.
