There is no evidence-backed universal winner: the right choice depends on what you need to capture, your operating system, audio setup, editing needs, and budget.
How to choose a screen recorder for PC
Start with the recording you need to make. Capturing a single window is simpler than combining a game, desktop, webcam, and narration; recording console footage also requires a way to bring the console’s video into the PC. Then compare the factors that affect your workflow:
- Capture target: desktop, individual window, game, webcam, or console footage.
- Operating system and hardware: available capture sources and encoding options vary by platform and PC.
- Audio control: decide whether you need desktop sound, a microphone, application-specific sound, or separate audio tracks.
- Editing: an integrated editor may suit tutorials; a capture-focused tool may be enough for straightforward clips.
- Setup and learning curve: scene-based controls provide flexibility, but may take more time to learn.
- Limits and licensing: check current recording-duration limits, watermarks, output options, trial terms, and license details on the vendor’s site.
These criteria align with the selection factors discussed in TechRadar’s screen-recording guide and its free screen-recorder guide.
Best screen recorders for PC
1. OBS Studio: best free option for control and multiple sources
OBS Studio is a strong choice if you want to assemble a recording from sources such as a display, game, webcam, or capture card. Its official Quick Start Guide covers display and window capture on Windows and Linux, game capture on Windows, and video capture devices such as webcams and capture cards. The default setup captures desktop audio and microphone input, and you can select sources manually.

OBS is free and open source, and TechRadar lists it for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its many controls can be daunting for a new user; that is an editorial assessment, not a measured setup-time comparison. Capture-source availability differs by operating system, so check the OBS documentation for your platform rather than assuming that every feature works identically everywhere.
For application audio capture, OBS documents support on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, with the feature marked beta in its documentation. Some applications may need routing workarounds, so do not assume every program’s audio will be captured the same way. See the OBS application-audio capture guide.

2. Bandicam: best for Windows-focused screen and gameplay recording
Bandicam is aimed at Windows users recording games, webcams, lectures, online video, or desktop activity. Its official download page lists version 27.0.6.2686, labeled Bandicam 2027 and dated September 9, 2026. For that release, the official overview lists Windows 11 and Windows 10 64-bit, a dual-core CPU and 4 GB RAM minimum, and a hardware encoder as a recommended graphics capability. It names NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, and AMD VCE/AMF as supported encoding options, and lists recording up to 3840 × 2160. These are vendor specifications, not independent performance test results.
The free version limits each recording to five minutes. The official download page says those recordings have no watermark, but edited exports contain a watermark; activation removes the recording time limit. Check Bandicam’s current licensing page for price and complete terms before deciding. Do not assume that the current release supports older Windows versions: the vendor’s support table distinguishes older systems for older product releases.

3. Camtasia: best candidate for recording and editing in one workflow
TechRadar lists Camtasia for Windows and macOS and presents it as a recorder with editing. That combination may suit someone producing tutorials who wants to capture and edit in one workflow. The available information here does not establish current pricing, license structure, or trial terms; verify those on TechSmith’s site before purchase. This is a workflow-based recommendation, not a claim that Camtasia is best for every PC user.
Other options: EaseUS RecExperts and Icecream Screen Recorder
TechRadar also discusses EaseUS RecExperts and Icecream Screen Recorder. Its guide describes RecExperts as a Windows option with webcam and audio capture and scheduling, and Icecream as a simpler recorder with annotation and zoom features. The guide reports a five-minute free-version limit for Icecream. Treat these as guide descriptions, not a substitute for checking each vendor’s current platform support, limits, and plan terms.

Recording setup: sources, audio, and a test clip
Choose capture sources before recording
In OBS, add the source that matches the job: a display or window for desktop work, game capture for a Windows game, or a video capture device for a webcam or capture card. The OBS Quick Start Guide explains these source types and how to select them. A source that is available on one operating system may not be available on another.
Check sound inputs separately
Confirm that the desktop audio and microphone meters respond before recording. If you need a particular application’s audio on Windows 10 version 2004 or later or Windows 11, consult OBS’s application-audio guide; the documented feature is beta and may require workarounds for some applications. A USB microphone is optional narration hardware, not a requirement for screen capture. OBS documents microphone input and manual device selection in its audio sources guide.

Record a short test first
Make a short recording and play it back before relying on a longer session. Check that the intended picture is visible, desktop sound and narration are present, and the clip plays as expected. OBS specifically recommends a brief test recording before a first session in its Quick Start Guide.
Recording console footage on a PC
A capture card is relevant when your source is a console rather than the PC desktop. OBS documents a game capture device as one route for bringing console footage into OBS and names Elgato and AVerMedia as examples in its video capture devices guide. Most people recording PC desktop activity do not need a capture card.
Limits of the available comparisons
There is no matched-hardware performance test here, so no recorder can be ranked responsibly by CPU overhead, frame loss, or output quality on that basis. Bandicam’s figures above are vendor specifications, while usability descriptions attributed to TechRadar are editorial judgments. Current Bandicam and Camtasia prices and full license terms should be confirmed directly with their vendors. Exact current eligibility for Xbox Game Bar and NVIDIA capture is not established here, so those tools are not ranked or given hardware requirements.
Keep a YouTube channel live with pre-recorded videos
A screen recorder makes a recording; it does not by itself keep a YouTube channel streaming continuously. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube live stream using uploaded videos, StreamNeo is the #1 option to consider: it loops videos from the cloud at the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the loop running in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera capture. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
