If swimming is your priority, the Garmin Swim 2 is the clearest swim-focused alternative in the official product information reviewed here: it tracks pool and open-water metrics such as distance, pace, stroke count and SWOLF. For Apple users who also want high-speed water-sport support or recreational scuba capability, consider Apple Watch Ultra 4. Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is the rugged Samsung-family option, with water-depth, time and temperature features. None of these ratings makes a watch suitable for every aquatic activity.
Can I swim with a Samsung Gear S3?
Samsung says the Gear S3 can stay under 5 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. The same guidance advises against high-pressure water and scuba diving, and warns that a hard impact can reduce water resistance. After exposure to seawater, Samsung recommends rinsing the watch with fresh water and drying it thoroughly. These are manufacturer use guidelines, not a guarantee for an older watch whose seals may have aged or whose case may have been damaged or repaired. Is the Gear S3 good for swimming?
Its water guidance is limited compared with watches that document dedicated swim tracking. Samsung’s stated depth and time limits do not establish that Gear S3 is a swim watch or that it records useful lap or open-water metrics. Water resistance ratings are based on specified test conditions; they do not automatically permit every activity at or below a stated depth. Samsung’s explanation of ISO 22810:2010 distinguishes static test pressure from dynamic exposure and warns against high-velocity water activities for the legacy devices it discusses. What is the best Samsung Gear S3 alternative for swimming?
| Watch | Best suited to | Officially documented water or swim information | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garmin Swim 2 | Pool and open-water swimming, especially when swim metrics matter most | Garmin lists distance, pace, stroke count and SWOLF. Its September 2023 owner’s manual specifies a Swim, 5 ATM rating. | Compare its ecosystem and current local availability with your needs; the cited material establishes a swim focus, not overall smartwatch superiority. |
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Apple users combining swimming with high-speed water sports or recreational scuba | Apple lists 100 m water resistance under ISO 22810:2010 and recreational scuba diving to 40 m under EN13319. | Apple’s support guidance recommends Ultra and later for high-velocity water sports; standard Series 2 and later are for shallow-water swimming. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 | Samsung-family users seeking a rugged watch with water-oriented features | Samsung lists 100 m water resistance under ISO 22810, EN13319 certification, and water-depth, time and temperature features. | Check local release and feature availability, and follow activity-specific instructions. Samsung says water resistance can diminish over time. |
| Samsung Gear Sport (legacy) | Someone specifically seeking an older Samsung watch for shallow-water activity | Samsung describes it as a 5 ATM device suitable for shallow-water activity. | It is a used or refurbished candidate; the cited sources do not establish current stock or continuing software support. |

Garmin Swim 2: choose it for swim tracking
Garmin documents pool and open-water tracking, including distance, pace, stroke count and SWOLF. Its owner’s manual gives manufacturer-estimated battery life of up to 7 days in watch mode and up to 14 hours in GPS mode; these are estimates, not guaranteed results for every use pattern. The manual specifies a Swim, 5 ATM rating. Garmin Swim 2 · Garmin Swim 2 Owner’s Manual – Specifications
Apple Watch Ultra 4: choose it for a broader range of water activities
Apple lists 100 m water resistance under ISO 22810:2010 and recreational scuba diving to 40 m under EN13319 for Ultra 4. Apple’s support guidance makes an important distinction: Series 2 and later support shallow-water swimming, while Ultra and later are recommended for high-velocity water sports. Apple says water resistance can diminish over time and describes Apple Watch as water resistant, not waterproof. Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2: choose it for a newer rugged Samsung-family option
Samsung lists 100 m water resistance under ISO 22810, EN13319 certification and features for tracking water depth, time and temperature. Those specifications do not remove the need to check the watch’s activity-specific limits or confirm which features are available in your region. Gear Sport: a legacy alternative, not a current recommendation
Samsung describes Gear Sport as 5 ATM and suitable for shallow-water activity, while excluding scuba, water skiing and high-velocity water exposure in its water-resistance discussion. Treat it as a used-device option and assess condition carefully; the cited material does not confirm present-day availability or software support. Start with the activity, not the headline depth rating. A pool watch, an open-water tracker and a device intended for high-speed water sports or scuba meet different needs.
- Activity: Confirm that the manufacturer explicitly supports your intended use—pool swimming, open water, snorkeling, water skiing or diving.
- Swim data and GPS: If you want training feedback, look for named metrics such as distance, pace, stroke count and SWOLF, and check whether open-water tracking is documented.
- Water-use limits: Read the activity-specific instructions as well as the rating. A depth or ATM figure is not blanket permission for high-pressure water, fast-moving water or scuba.
- Phone ecosystem: Check compatibility with your phone and the features you rely on before choosing a watch.
- Battery, fit and comfort: Compare manufacturer battery estimates for your intended mode, and consider whether the watch is comfortable for long sessions.
- Local price and availability: Check current listings in your country. Availability and price can vary, and the cited product information does not establish current inventory.
- Condition and age: For a used watch, consider prior impacts, repairs and seal age. Resistance can decline with wear and mechanical stress.
Can I use a swim watch in open water?
Only rely on open-water tracking when the manufacturer documents it for the specific watch. Garmin explicitly lists open-water swimming for Swim 2, alongside pool swimming. A water-resistance rating by itself does not establish that a watch can track an open-water swim or provide GPS-based swim data. Garmin Swim 2 product information
Can I wear a smartwatch for water sports?
That depends on the sport and the exact watch. Shallow pool swimming is not the same exposure as high-speed water sports or scuba. Apple’s guidance reserves high-velocity water-sport recommendations for Ultra and later; Samsung warns against high-pressure exposure in its Gear S3 guidance. Follow the manufacturer’s restrictions for the activity rather than extrapolating from a depth rating.

- After seawater exposure, rinse the watch with fresh water.
- Dry it thoroughly before charging or storing it.
- Do not assume a watch remains water resistant after a hard impact, repair or years of use; follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model.
Samsung gives the rinse-and-dry guidance for its smart watches, and notes that impacts can lessen water resistance. Apple also warns that resistance can diminish over time. Samsung Support: Samsung smart watch water resistance tips · Apple Support: About Apple Watch water resistance
