Baldur’s Gate 3 is unusually good at combining tactical party combat, responsive storytelling, and companion romances. No single recommendation here recreates that whole mix. For the closest design lineage, try Larian’s Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition; for romance-focused fantasy companions, consider Dragon Age: The Veilguard; and for a sprawling squad story in a different genre, play Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
Which RPG should you play after Baldur’s Gate 3?
Choose based on what you want to keep. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the nearest match in developer lineage and party-RPG feel. The Veilguard puts companion relationships and romance front and center. Dragon Age: Origins and Inquisition offer different kinds of fantasy-party storytelling, while Mass Effect Legendary Edition trades fantasy tactics for a science-fiction squad and trilogy-scale narrative. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is worth considering if you want a more intricate CRPG with flexible combat modes and romance.
| Game | Best fit if you want | What changes from BG3 |
|---|---|---|
| Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition | A close Larian-made party-RPG follow-up | Separate setting and cast; it is a design neighbor, not a sequel. |
| Dragon Age: The Veilguard | Fantasy companions and explicit romance options | Romance ultimately involves committing to one partner; the cited romance guide does not establish BG3-like combat or campaign structure. |
| Dragon Age: Origins | An older fantasy campaign about gathering allies | Its combat is not turn-based, according to the cited comparison. |
| Dragon Age: Inquisition | Open-world fantasy, consequential choices, and complex characters | It is an action RPG with an open-world structure, rather than a turn-based BG3-style game. |
| Mass Effect Legendary Edition | A science-fiction squad and long-form ensemble story | It shifts away from fantasy and tactical party combat to a squad-action format. |
| Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous | A detailed CRPG with party choices and romance | Its combat can be turn-based or real-time; confirm the edition and platform that suit you. |
For the closest Larian-style follow-up: Divinity: Original Sin 2
Larian made Divinity: Original Sin 2 before Baldur’s Gate 3, and it is a natural next choice if you want another party-centered RPG from the same studio. GameSpot also identifies it as a particularly close follow-up. The connection is in design lineage, not shared story: it has its own world, lore, and characters. Larian’s official site identifies the studio’s earlier game, and the named Definitive Edition is listed on Steam.

Pick this first if you want to stay with a fantasy party RPG and are willing to meet a new cast and setting. The available sources support its status as the closest follow-up, but do not establish that it reproduces BG3’s full companion-romance experience.
#1 Best Overall
- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
For romanceable fantasy companions: Dragon Age: The Veilguard
EA’s official romance guide says all seven companions can be romance partners. Relationships develop through dialogue, companion quests, support, and gifts; the player eventually commits to one partner. EA describes the appeal this way: “Romances offer deeper connections, unlock dialogue, and more intimate insights into your companions.”
That makes The Veilguard the clearest pick in this list if the relationship arcs themselves are your priority. The cited guide documents its romance systems, not a close match to BG3’s combat or campaign structure, so choose it for its companion focus rather than as a one-to-one gameplay substitute.

For other fantasy-party stories: Dragon Age: Origins and Inquisition
Dragon Age: Origins
Origins is an older BioWare fantasy RPG built around gathering allies and fighting to unite people against a threat, as described on BioWare’s Dragon Age page. It is a choice for readers who want a classic party-based fantasy campaign. A cited comparison notes that its combat is not turn-based, so it does not preserve that part of BG3’s feel.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Inquisition takes a broader, open-world approach. BioWare describes it as a story-driven RPG with complex characters, difficult decisions, and choices that shape the experience. Consider it if exploration and a wide-ranging fantasy story matter more to you than tactical, turn-based combat. Its action-RPG and open-world structure makes it a different kind of match for BG3.

For a sci-fi ensemble: Mass Effect Legendary Edition
If what you miss most is traveling with a memorable squad and following a large character-driven story, Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a strong genre switch. BioWare says the collection includes the single-player base content from all three Mass Effect games and more than 40 DLC. See BioWare’s product page for the collection details.
It is science fiction rather than fantasy, and its squad-action format is not a substitute for BG3’s tactical party combat. Choose it for a connected trilogy and ensemble storytelling; the official product description establishes the collection’s contents, not a specific equivalence between the games’ romance systems.
Rank #4
For a deeper CRPG: Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous suits players who want a dense CRPG with party companions, meaningful decisions, character customization, and romance. GameSpot’s recommendation describes its combat as playable in either turn-based or real-time mode, giving players a choice in how battles unfold.
That flexibility and its CRPG focus make it an appealing option for readers who want systems depth alongside companion stories. The cited product information does not establish a specific edition or platform, so verify the version available for your system before buying.
