For a new Raspberry Pi appliance to stream pre-recorded videos to YouTube, choose the Raspberry Pi 5. Its quad-core 2.4GHz processor, Gigabit Ethernet and 4K HEVC decoding make it a flexible starting point. The important caveat: Pi 5 has no hardware H.264 encoder, so an H.264 output stream must be encoded by its CPU. Raspberry Pi reports real-time 1080p30 software encoding in its tested configurations, but that is not a guarantee for every video, application or nonstop setup.

If your priority is keeping a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to consider first: it loops uploaded videos, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. For a Raspberry Pi DIY setup, the model choice depends on whether your workflow needs H.264 encoding, can pass through or remux the file, and can reliably loop and recover unattended.

Which Raspberry Pi model is best?

The Raspberry Pi 5 is the best general-purpose starting point for a new single-stream build. Its four-core 2.4GHz Cortex-A76 CPU gives it flexibility for software encoding, while Gigabit Ethernet is suitable for a fixed, wired streaming appliance. It can decode 4K HEVC, but that does not mean every streaming app can use that capability or that it can transcode every source smoothly.

Choose the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B instead when your tested software workflow specifically benefits from its hardware H.264 encoder. Pi 5 does not have a hardware H.264 encoder. That distinction matters if your source must be encoded to H.264, but it does not alone establish which board will perform better overall: the file, software, encoding settings, cooling and network all matter. Raspberry Pi’s 2023 technical discussion confirms the Pi 5 lacks encode hardware: Raspberry Pi 5 architecture discussion.

Raspberry Pi 5 Quad-core 2.4GHz Cortex-A76; Gigabit Ethernet; 4K HEVC decoder; no hardware H.264 encoder. A flexible new build, especially if you need modern CPU headroom or your source can be passed through/remuxed compatibly.
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Includes hardware H.264 encoding; whether an application can use it depends on the software. A workflow that specifically needs hardware H.264 encoding and has been verified with the intended application.

Do not assume Pi 4 is automatically cheaper, more reliable or faster for your complete setup; compare current local pricing and test the exact workflow.

Decide whether the video needs to be encoded

The most consequential decision is what happens to the recording between storage and YouTube ingest:

  • Compatible pass-through or remux: If the application can send the existing video and audio streams in a format YouTube accepts, without re-encoding the video, the board’s encoding capability may be less important. Compatibility depends on the file and the chosen software.
  • Transcoding: If the source must be converted to the required codec, resolution or frame rate, the Pi has to do that work. Pi 5 uses CPU encoding for H.264; Pi 4 hardware H.264 may help only when the selected software supports it.

YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 as supported ingest video codecs. That does not prove a particular Raspberry Pi application can encode or pass through each one, nor that it can loop files and reconnect unattended. Confirm codec support in the application’s documentation and test the actual recording before committing to a 24/7 setup. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

What the Pi 5 encoding figures do—and do not—show

In its 2026 H.264 paper, Raspberry Pi reports that Pi 5 software encoding can produce 1080p30 in real time in the configurations it tested. The paper reports as little as 60% of one CPU core for a low-latency configuration and approximately 100–150% of one core for its higher-quality preset. These are vendor test results, not a promise for your file, software build, overlays, audio processing or uninterrupted operation. Read the Raspberry Pi H.264 encoding paper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use those figures as evidence that Pi 5 software encoding is plausible for some 1080p30 workflows—not as a reason to skip a full test. A heavier source, different preset, added graphics or thermal throttling can change the result. For 1080p60 or higher-resolution transcoding, the cited Pi 5 figures do not establish performance; test before choosing the board and settings.

Power supply

Raspberry Pi recommends its 27W USB-C supply for Pi 5. A 3A supply can boot the board, but limits downstream USB current to 600mA, which can matter if you attach a storage drive or other peripherals. See the Raspberry Pi power supply guidance.

Cooling

For sustained encoding, use a Pi 5-compatible active cooler or fan case. Raspberry Pi says Pi 5 performs best with active cooling under heavy load; the right cooling depends on the actual workload. Playback without transcoding may place a different load on the board than continuous CPU encoding. The Pi 5 product page describes the official case’s integrated fan and available memory variants.

Storage

Pi 5 has a microSD slot and USB 3 ports. Size the storage for the videos you intend to loop and leave room for the operating system and logs. If using a USB drive, account for available USB power; Raspberry Pi recommends a powered hub when attached devices exceed the board’s power budget. See Raspberry Pi’s USB power guidance.

Network

Use wired Gigabit Ethernet when practical for a stationary appliance. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and selecting a bitrate your connection can sustain. The Pi’s Ethernet link speed does not guarantee your internet upload capacity or stability.

Configure YouTube ingest settings

You need an eligible YouTube channel and an encoder that accepts YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. In Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and copy the encoder URL and key into your streaming application. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, place it in public code or share screenshots containing it. YouTube recommends previewing the incoming stream and monitoring stream health. Setup details are in YouTube’s live streaming guide.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS to encrypt the feed to Google’s servers, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. The bitrate examples below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest values, not measured Raspberry Pi throughput.

H.264 output YouTube recommended ingest bitrate Keyframe interval
1080p30 5 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
1080p60 6 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds

Choose the YouTube bitrate recommendation for your actual codec, resolution and frame rate rather than treating these two examples as universal. Leave upload headroom for normal network variation, then verify stream health in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s codec and bitrate recommendations.

Test looping and recovery before relying on 24/7 operation

A board recommendation cannot establish that a specific application will loop your recording, recover after a network interruption or run continuously. The operating system image, encoder version, media file, loop method, power, cooling and internet connection all affect the outcome. Treat uninterrupted broadcasting as a target to validate, not a guaranteed property of either Pi model.

  1. Test the exact file. Confirm its container, video and audio codecs, resolution and frame rate, and establish whether your application passes it through, remuxes it or transcodes it.
  2. Run a private or unlisted test. Use the intended YouTube ingest settings and watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio/video sync problems and stream-health warnings.
  3. Verify the loop. Let the application reach the end of the recording and confirm that playback restarts as intended, without an unwanted gap or manual action.
  4. Test a network interruption. Confirm whether the application reconnects and resumes sending after internet service returns; do not assume reconnection behavior from the board model.
  5. Run a sustained soak test. Leave the full setup operating for a meaningful period while checking CPU load, temperature, power stability, storage and stream health. A brief successful preview does not demonstrate round-the-clock reliability.
  6. Keep a recovery plan. Record the encoder settings and store the stream key securely so you can restore the configuration if the application or storage fails.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit

YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete replay, keep a local recording and/or schedule separate, shorter broadcasts rather than relying on YouTube to archive one uninterrupted day-long stream. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube without maintaining a Raspberry Pi, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded recordings or playlists. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera, and it streams to YouTube.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer can be off.
  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account.

The same features are included on every plan; only the billing length changes. A slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
