For most startups in 2026, start with a managed scraping API that rotates proxies and renders JavaScript. It gets a production pilot running without operating browsers, IP pools, retries and challenge handling yourself. Add a dedicated proxy network only when you need exact geography, high concurrency, long-lived sessions or the ability to move the proxy layer into your own crawler. Choose Apify when reusable Actors and scheduled workflows are the product; Bright Data or Oxylabs when global coverage, enterprise support and compliance documentation justify greater spend; and Zyte when extraction quality and a scraping-focused API are the priority.
Do not choose from headline IP counts alone. Test the exact domains, countries, session behavior and freshness target you need, then price each vendor by a successful, complete record after rendering, retries, parsing, storage and maintenance.
The short answer: a managed API first, proxies when you outgrow it
A startup usually has more engineering risk in browser automation and failure recovery than in sending the first HTTP request. A managed scraping API bundles proxy rotation, JavaScript rendering and retry logic, so a small team can validate demand before taking on proxy operations. This is the sensible default for a prototype and for moderate production traffic.
Use a separate proxy network when one or more of these conditions is true:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- You must pin requests to a country, city, ASN or ZIP-level location.
- You need high concurrency, custom session lifetimes or sticky sessions.
- You are building your own crawler and want to switch scraping vendors without rewriting collection code.
- Your targets require unusual headers, authentication or transport behavior that a managed endpoint cannot expose.
Keep the collection policy separate from the technical stack. Review each target’s robots directives, terms, privacy and personal-data obligations, copyright issues and contractual restrictions in the relevant jurisdiction.
How the leading options fit different startup workloads
| Workload | Best starting point | Why it fits | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prototype across a few domains | Apify or a simple managed API | Fast integration and less proxy operations | Usage-based bills and Actor quality vary |
| JavaScript-heavy pages at moderate production volume | Zyte, ScrapingBee or ScraperAPI | Managed rendering and proxy handling reduce browser work | Credit multipliers and target-specific success rates can change your effective price |
| Global e-commerce, price monitoring or difficult targets | Bright Data or Oxylabs | Large networks, geographic controls, unlockers and support | Higher minimum spend and procurement complexity |
| Reusable automation pipelines | Apify | Actors, scheduling, marketplace components and workflow tooling | Actor maintenance and platform coupling |
| Compliance-heavy enterprise procurement | Bright Data or Oxylabs | Published compliance/security positioning and support options | Verify certification scope, data rights and contract terms |
What the published success figures do—and do not—tell you
A 2026 Bright Data comparison reports these directional figures, attributing them to Proxyway’s 2025 report and a Scrape.do benchmark:
| Provider or service | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bright Data | 98.44% average success rate; 400M+ IPs; 437+ pre-built scrapers | Figures reported by the 2026 comparison, not a universal guarantee |
| Scrape.do | 98.19% success rate; 110M+ IPs | Same benchmark caveat |
| Zyte | 93.14% success rate | Directional comparison figure |
| Oxylabs | 85.82% success rate; 100M+ IPs | Directional comparison figure |
| Decodo | 85.88% success rate | Directional comparison figure |
| ScrapingBee | 84.47% success rate | Directional comparison figure |
| ScraperAPI | 68.95% success rate | Directional comparison figure |
| ZenRows | 70.39% success rate; 55M IPs | Directional comparison figure |
| Apify | Usage-based platform with a marketplace; more than 3,000 pre-built scrapers/Actors are reported by Data Research Tools | Actor count and quality can change |
These numbers combine different providers and methodologies. They are useful for creating a shortlist, not for forecasting your own result. A protected retail page in one country can behave very differently from a public documentation page in another.
Vendor-by-vendor guidance
Apify: best when workflows and reusable Actors are central
Apify is a strong first choice when collection is part of a larger automation pipeline. Actors can be reused, scheduled and combined with marketplace components. That is valuable if your startup expects many small jobs rather than one custom crawler.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Budget for platform coupling: an Actor may need maintenance when a target changes, and marketplace quality is uneven. Measure the cost of a complete dataset, not only the run time or request count.

Bright Data: broadest enterprise-oriented option in this comparison
The 2026 comparison reports 400M+ IPs, JavaScript rendering, 437+ pre-built scrapers and a 98.44% average success rate for Bright Data. It also cites GDPR, CCPA, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 claims. Those breadth and compliance materials can simplify global e-commerce programs and enterprise procurement.
Expect more involved purchasing and a higher minimum commitment than a lightweight API. Confirm what a certification covers, how data rights are assigned and which features are included in your contract before treating a compliance claim as approval.
Oxylabs: production support and infrastructure for demanding targets
Oxylabs is a fit when support, geographic controls and production infrastructure matter more than the fastest prototype. The comparison reports 100M+ IPs and an 85.82% success rate. Validate performance on your own target set; the reported rate is not an SLA for your workload.

Zyte: scraping-focused API and extraction priority
Zyte is appropriate when the hard part is turning pages into structured data rather than merely obtaining HTML. The comparison reports a 93.14% success rate. Test parser completeness, JavaScript behavior and retry outcomes on representative pages before committing to a broad rollout.
ScrapingBee and ScraperAPI: straightforward managed starting points
Both services are commonly considered for JavaScript-heavy pages because managed rendering and proxy handling reduce browser operations. The comparison reports an 84.47% success rate for ScrapingBee and 68.95% for ScraperAPI. Those figures should prompt a pilot, not a conclusion: target mix, geography and benchmark method have a large effect.

The same comparison reports 85.88% for Decodo, 70.39% and 55M IPs for ZenRows, and 98.19% and 110M+ IPs for Scrape.do. If one offers the location, session or integration behavior your targets require, test it alongside the larger names under identical conditions.
Managed scraping API versus a dedicated proxy network
Choose a managed API when speed and simplicity dominate
- One endpoint can handle rotation, rendering and retries.
- Your team does not need to maintain browser workers or proxy health checks.
- You can accept provider-specific request and response formats.
- Your initial workload is small enough that per-request convenience outweighs infrastructure control.
Add a proxy network when control or portability dominates
- You need sticky sessions for login or multi-step flows.
- Country, city, ASN or ZIP targeting is a product requirement.
- You need to run your own browser fleet or bring the proxy layer to multiple crawlers.
- You need to tune concurrency, connection reuse, headers and backoff independently.
A hybrid is often practical: use a managed API for difficult JavaScript targets and a proxy network for simple, high-volume pages. Route by domain and measured success rate rather than forcing every request through one provider.
Model the real cost, not the advertised request price
Credit systems can multiply effective cost by 5x to 75x when JavaScript rendering or premium proxies are enabled, according to the comparison. A cheap base request is irrelevant if each successful record consumes several rendered attempts.
Track this unit economics equation:
Cost per usable record = (requests + retries + browser time + parsing + storage + engineering maintenance) ÷ complete records accepted.
Include failed challenges, empty pages and partial parses in the numerator. Record whether a vendor charges for a failed attempt, a rendered attempt, bandwidth or browser time. Ask how cache hits are billed and whether concurrency limits create queue time that affects your freshness SLA.

Run a representative pilot before signing a large contract
- Define the workload. List exact domains and URL patterns, countries, request rate, session length, freshness target and output schema.
- Choose a sample. Include public pages, JavaScript-rendered pages, login or cookie flows where permitted, pagination, empty results and known challenge pages.
- Use identical settings. Keep user agent, timeout, retry budget, rendering mode and concurrency comparable across vendors.
- Capture operational metrics. Measure success rate, latency, challenge rate, parse completeness, retries, browser time and cost per usable record.
- Test degradation. Run at your expected peak rate and again after a pause to expose throttling, session expiry and proxy pool changes.
- Keep a fallback. Route high-value targets to a second provider and define the signal that triggers failover.
- Review legal fit. Document robots directives, terms, privacy and personal-data handling, copyright and contractual restrictions for every target and jurisdiction.
Architecture that stays portable
Put a small internal adapter between application code and vendors. Normalize URL, headers, cookies, proxy location, rendering mode, timeout and retry policy on the request side. Normalize status, final URL, response body, challenge classification, proxy metadata and billing data on the response side.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStore the raw response separately from parsed records. That lets you re-parse when a schema changes without paying for another fetch. Add idempotency keys for scheduled jobs, a queue with per-domain concurrency limits and a dead-letter stream for pages that need manual review. Keep credentials in a secret manager and redact cookies or authorization headers from logs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common failures
HTTP success but empty or incomplete data
The page may require JavaScript, a wait condition or a different selector. Enable rendering, wait for a specific element or network idle, and compare the returned HTML with the browser’s final DOM. If the target changes markup frequently, prefer a parser or Actor you can version and test.
Repeated 403, 429 or challenge pages
Reduce per-domain concurrency, increase backoff, rotate sessions appropriately and verify that your request rate is allowed. Test a different geography or proxy type only when the target and your policy permit it. Do not treat endless retries as reliability.
Login or multi-step flow loses state
Use sticky sessions, persist the required cookies securely and keep the complete flow on the same session. A stateless request API may not be suitable; a browser-capable workflow or your own crawler can provide the necessary control.

Latency threatens the freshness target
Measure queue time separately from network and browser time. Lower concurrency on challenged domains, raise it on stable public pages, and route urgent jobs to the provider with the best measured tail latency rather than the best average benchmark.
Where ScreenshotNeo fits alongside a scraping stack
If your product needs a visual audit, preview, regression image or PDF in addition to extracted data, ScreenshotNeo is the first screenshot API alternative to try: it removes common consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and offers an MCP server for AI agents.
It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for a data-extraction API. Use it for PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF captures while your scraping service handles structured records.

For a clean capture of a page, make one GET request. The API accepts 63 options, including full-page and element capture, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and hide actions, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user-agent and authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.
cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for option names and response headers. Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Final selection checklist
- Can the provider reach your exact domains from the required countries?
- Does rendering wait for the content your parser needs?
- Are retries, challenges, cache hits and failed loads billed, and how?
- Can you control session persistence, headers, cookies and concurrency?
- What is the measured cost per complete record at peak rate?
- Can you export raw responses and move to another provider?
- Are support, security documents, data rights and SLA terms acceptable?
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need both a scraping API and a proxy network?
Not initially. Start with a managed API unless exact geography, sticky sessions, high concurrency or portability requires a separate proxy layer. A hybrid route by domain is often the practical next step.
Which metric should determine the winner?
Use cost per complete, usable record on your own domains, including rendering, retries, parsing, storage and maintenance. Headline IP counts and cross-provider benchmark rates are shortlist signals only.
When is Apify a better choice than a single endpoint?
Choose Apify when reusable Actors, scheduling, marketplace components and workflow automation are central to the product. Include Actor maintenance and platform coupling in your evaluation.
Is ScreenshotNeo a scraping API?
No. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF captures. It complements a scraping API when your workflow also needs clean visual evidence or previews.
