Yes—you can use a programmable keyboard without keeping a remapping utility installed or running on every computer. Choose a model that saves its keymap or profiles to the keyboard itself. Most still need a setup tool at least once; “without software” usually means no host software is needed for normal typing after you save the configuration.

What “without software” means for a programmable keyboard

The phrase can mean several things. A keyboard that needs no software ever is unusual: even hardware-programmable models normally need a configuration interface or firmware tools to set up remaps, layers, macros, or profiles. The practical goal is to configure the keyboard once and have it retain those changes when the setup tool is closed or the keyboard is moved to another computer.

With onboard storage or programmable firmware, the keyboard’s microcontroller translates each physical key press into the configured keyboard signal. The computer receives ordinary keyboard input; it does not need to run the tool that created the mapping. This can be useful on a locked-down work PC, a login screen, or a second computer, provided the connection and the particular feature are supported there.

Keyboard type Software needed while typing? Saved remaps on another computer?
Basic keyboard remapped by the operating system Usually, or the remap is tied to that computer Usually not
Vendor keyboard with onboard profiles Usually not after saving Often, depending on the feature and connection mode
QMK keyboard configured with VIA or Vial No, once the keymap is saved to the keyboard Usually, subject to firmware, connection, and feature limits

Keychron K2 Pro: conventional wireless keyboard

The K2 Pro is a 75% wireless mechanical keyboard with QMK/VIA-oriented programmability. It is a practical fit if you want a familiar layout, remaps, shortcuts, and macros without relying on a desktop utility during everyday use. Keychron’s product documentation directs users to its Launcher web configurator, which requires a supported Chromium-based browser such as Chrome, Opera, or Edge and a wired USB-C connection for configuration. That is a setup requirement, not a claim that the keyboard needs Launcher open to type with saved changes.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The K2 Pro also supports Bluetooth connections to up to three devices, but do not assume that every configuration or feature works identically over Bluetooth and USB. If wireless operation is essential, test the exact remaps and macros in the connection mode you plan to use.

Glorious GMMK PRO: enthusiast board with documented profiles

Glorious documents the GMMK PRO as having three onboard profiles, with three layers per profile, and a programmable rotary encoder. The product overview lists 60 KB per profile; the product page describes QMK support. It is a wired custom-keyboard option for someone who wants profile storage and is comfortable checking the exact board revision and firmware support.

QMK/VIA compatibility does not guarantee that every feature in Glorious CORE is available through VIA, or that all revisions behave alike. Check the revision and supported firmware before buying or flashing. This is a less suitable choice if you want a simple, lightweight, wireless office keyboard.

Wooting 60HE+: gaming profiles and Hall-effect features

Wooting says the 60HE+ can store up to four onboard profiles, which load on another device without opening Wootility. Its product page also describes per-key remapping, adjustable actuation, and Rapid Trigger. Wootility is still the configuration and detailed-tuning tool, but the stored profiles are intended to remain available without it running.

This is a gaming-focused implementation, not a general-purpose QMK/VIA keyboard. The 60% layout omits a dedicated function row and arrow cluster, and the cited product is a module rather than necessarily a complete keyboard. Check what components are included before treating it as a ready-to-type purchase.

Dygma Defy: high-end ergonomic alternative

The split Dygma Defy is aimed at buyers who specifically want ergonomic hardware, thumb clusters, and extensive customization—not simply a cheap saved remap. Vial-compatible keyboards: a configuration route, not a keyboard recommendation

Vial is a cross-platform open-source configuration interface for keyboards with compatible Vial firmware. It does not make an unsupported keyboard programmable, and not every QMK keyboard has Vial firmware. If you need to flash community firmware, identify the exact model and revision first and understand the recovery process; firmware changes can create compatibility or support problems.

QMK, VIA, Vial, and vendor utilities

QMK is firmware

QMK is open-source keyboard firmware that can implement layers, macros, tap-hold behavior, combos, mouse keys, and other functions supported by a particular board and firmware build. You can use a compatible dynamic-keymap interface, or create and flash custom firmware. The latter offers deeper control but may involve finding the exact keyboard revision, editing a keymap, compiling firmware, and using the board’s bootloader.

VIA and Vial are configuration interfaces

VIA provides a graphical way to configure compatible keyboards; it is separate from QMK. A QMK keyboard is not automatically VIA-compatible: it may need specific firmware or a keyboard definition. Vial is another interface and uses compatible Vial firmware, so check support for the exact model rather than relying on the name of the firmware family alone.

Vendor utilities can be easier, but verify what is stored

Tools such as Keychron Launcher, Glorious CORE, Wootility, and Dygma Bazecor may offer a straightforward setup and controls tailored to the product. The decisive question is whether the particular changes you care about—such as macros, lighting, or gaming profiles—are written to the keyboard. Some tools also offer functions that cannot operate without a host application.

How to configure and test onboard remapping

Save a keymap with a supported configurator

  1. Confirm that the exact keyboard model and revision support onboard saving, and check whether the feature works in your intended wired or wireless mode.
  2. Connect by USB if the manufacturer requires wired configuration. For the Keychron K2 Pro, use its Launcher in a supported Chromium-based browser with the keyboard connected by cable.
  3. Open the official configurator or the documented VIA/Vial tool. If a browser tool requests USB access, grant it only for the trusted configurator.
  4. Select the correct keyboard definition or firmware if required. If the board is not detected, confirm its revision and firmware before trying another definition.
  5. Choose the target profile or layer and assign the desired keycodes, modifiers, media functions, or supported macros.
  6. Use the tool’s save, write, or apply control to store the changes on the keyboard. Export or record the layout if the tool supports it.

Verify that the keyboard—not the computer—retains the change

  1. Close the configurator; do not leave it running in the background.
  2. Unplug the keyboard, connect it to a different computer, and test the remapped keys, layers, macros, and physical profile switching you intend to use.
  3. Test the intended connection separately: USB, Bluetooth, or 2.4 GHz may not expose the same advanced features.
  4. If you need the mapping before sign-in or on restricted systems, test at a login screen or on a non-admin account. Test BIOS/UEFI or a console separately if those are intended targets.

Use custom firmware only when you need the extra control

A full QMK firmware workflow generally requires identifying the exact board and revision, obtaining the right source, defining the keymap, compiling, entering bootloader mode, flashing, and testing keys, layers, reset behavior, and connection modes. Keep a known-good firmware file and follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions. Do not use a bootloader shortcut or firmware image intended for another revision.

What works without software—and what may not

Stored behavior can include ordinary remaps, layer switching, function-layer shortcuts, keystroke macros, and sometimes media controls, encoder assignments, lighting settings, or gaming profiles. The feature list is model-specific: onboard memory does not guarantee that every effect, profile, or advanced setting is stored.

Host software may still be needed to edit the layout, update or recover firmware, synchronize settings in the cloud, monitor battery status, manage wireless devices, switch profiles automatically by application, or customize a display. A macro that types a fixed sequence is different from one that launches an application or controls windows; the latter usually needs operating-system integration or vendor software. A macro’s keycodes can also behave differently across operating systems, keyboard layouts, and applications.

How to choose the right keyboard

  • Confirm onboard storage explicitly. Look for “onboard memory,” “stored profiles,” “save to device,” or clear documentation that remaps persist when the utility is closed. “Programmable” by itself is not enough.
  • Check profile and layer limits. Find out how many profiles and layers are available, whether macros share limited memory, and whether profiles can be selected with a keyboard shortcut or hardware control.
  • Verify feature and connection parity. Ask whether the macros, lighting, profile switching, and other desired settings work in wired, Bluetooth, and 2.4-GHz modes separately.
  • Check exact firmware support. QMK does not automatically mean VIA or Vial support. Confirm compatibility for the model revision and the configuration tool you intend to use.
  • Look for a recovery path. Prefer documented factory reset, firmware downloads, and bootloader or recovery instructions. Avoid unofficial firmware if you are not prepared to restore the board.
  • Consider the target device. Standard USB keyboard input is broadly usable, but Bluetooth pairing, unusual keycodes, macros, and vendor-specific features may fail on a login screen, BIOS, console, remote desktop, or managed computer.
  • Check policy before using macros. A stored macro sends keyboard input and may be restricted by an employer, game, or security policy.

Alternatives if a full programmable keyboard is not the answer

Use a macro keypad for a few dedicated shortcuts

A separate keypad can provide a small set of hardware shortcuts without replacing the main keyboard. The Glorious GMMK Numpad advertises 17 programmable buttons, onboard profiles, and QMK support in wired mode. Verify regional availability and exact support for the version sold.

Use operating-system remapping when portability is not needed

Tools such as AutoHotkey, Karabiner-Elements, and PowerToys can support application-specific behavior, but they must be available on each computer and may be blocked by workplace policy. This is different from a remap stored in the keyboard.

Choose a custom QMK board for maximum independence

A custom QMK build can reduce dependence on a vendor’s utility and offer extensive control, but it requires more technical work and can make wireless convenience, manufacturer support, and recovery less straightforward.
