For the most newcomer-focused start, choose Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee!—especially if you like Pokémon GO’s catching style. Pick Pokémon Sword or Shield for a clearer Gym-and-League route, or Scarlet or Violet if you want to explore an open world freely. These are matches for different preferences, not a proven easiest-to-hardest ranking.

What Pokémon game should I play first?

Start with the kind of adventure you want, rather than trying to identify one objectively easiest game. The official descriptions support differences in onboarding and structure, but do not establish a comparative difficulty ranking.

What you want Good starting point What to know
The clearest newcomer welcome and a guided Kanto adventure Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee! Designed to be approachable, with Pokémon GO-inspired wild catching and familiar trainer battles. The catching loop differs from the traditional RPG pattern.
Open-world wandering Pokémon Scarlet or Violet Explore Paldea freely, but the scale can feel overwhelming if you prefer a tightly directed route.
A clear Gym Challenge Pokémon Sword or Shield The Galar Gym Challenge and League tournament give the journey a clear destination, with a Wild Area for exploration.
A familiar older story with modern conveniences Pokémon Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl These retell the original Sinnoh story; they are better suited to someone drawn to Sinnoh than to a player specifically seeking an open world.
A research-focused adventure that changes the usual formula Pokémon Legends: Arceus The central goal is surveying and catching Pokémon to complete Sinnoh’s first Pokédex, rather than following the standard Gym journey.

Best first pick for a welcoming start: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Eevee!

The Pokémon Company describes Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! as approachable for people who have never played the series. The games revisit Kanto with inspiration from Pokémon Yellow and use an intuitive, Pokémon GO-inspired catching mechanic. Pokémon’s official page calls them a way for longtime fans and first-time players alike to experience the adventure; that is the publisher’s positioning, not an independent difficulty rating. Wild Pokémon catching is a visible throw interaction using Joy-Con motion or button controls. Trainer battles retain familiar Pokémon battle gameplay, so this is not simply the mobile game transferred to Switch. Pokémon’s game overview

#1 Best Overall
Pokémon Pokopia - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
  • Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
  • Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.

The Pikachu and Eevee editions have different partner Pokémon and some different encountered species. Choose the partner or exclusives you prefer; a beginner does not need both. A standard Joy-Con is enough. Poké Ball Plus is an optional controller, not a requirement. The official page says online features require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership; that is not a requirement for the solo campaign. Check current service details before relying on online features.

Best for open-world curiosity: Scarlet or Violet

Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet take place in Paldea, a seamless open world where Pokémon are visible across varied environments and players can move between towns and wilderness. Pokémon’s family guide describes the games as approachable for newcomers. Pokémon family guide

Pokémon Legends: Arceus - US Version
  • Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
  • Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
  • Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
  • Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
  • Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale

That welcome does not mean every beginner will find the structure comfortable. Pokémon’s game page acknowledges that a large open world can feel overwhelming. Choose this pair if you enjoy deciding where to go and exploring at your own pace; if you would rather have a more obvious route, Sword or Shield is a better fit. Official Scarlet and Violet page

Your first partner choice is Sprigatito (Grass), Fuecoco (Fire), or Quaxly (Water). Select the one you like; the official material does not establish a single best choice for beginners.

Rank #3
Pokémon Violet - US Version
  • Embark on a new Pokémon adventure
  • Catch, battle, and train Pokémon in the Paldea Region, a vast land filled with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, small towns, and sprawling cities.
  • Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea.
  • Embark on an independent study called the Treasure Hunt to gain new experiences, meet new people, and find your very own treasure.

Best for a directed Gym route: Sword or Shield

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield center on the Galar Gym Challenge and the tournament that determines the Champion. The Wild Area adds free-camera exploration, variable weather, and many Pokémon, while the main journey retains a clear League destination. That blend suits a beginner who wants room to explore without an entirely open-world structure. Official Sword and Shield page

The versions differ in available species. Pokémon gives Sirfetch’d as a Sword-only example and Galarian Ponyta as a Shield-only example. Choose based on the version-exclusive Pokémon that appeal to you; you do not need both for a first playthrough.

What to play next

Use your first game to decide which format you want more of. These are suggestions based on the games’ described structures, not an official play order.

Best Value
Pokémon™ Legends: Z-A - Nintendo Switch
  • Live the life of a Pokémon Trainer in the streets of Lumiose City!
  • For the first time in the Pokémon RPG series, command your Pokémon in real-time battles
  • Use the power of Mega Evolution in battle and take on rampaging Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon
  • Compete in the Z-A Royale each night to test your skills and try to become the strongest Pokémon Trainer
  • Visit shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free—all centered around Prism Tower
  • After Let’s Go: move to Sword or Shield for a more traditional Gym-and-League journey, or choose Scarlet or Violet if you want open-world freedom.
  • After Sword or Shield: try Scarlet or Violet for a larger open-world format.
  • After either style of mainline adventure: Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl retell the Sinnoh story with modern conveniences. Legends: Arceus offers a different, research-led adventure focused on completing the first Pokédex. Official Legends: Arceus page

Do I need both Pokémon versions?

No. For a first playthrough, choose one edition. Version differences include partner Pokémon or species that appear in the game; the official descriptions do not suggest that a beginner needs both. Trading can matter if completing a collection is a priority, but it is not a prerequisite to playing through one game.

Is Pokémon Scarlet good for beginners?

It can be. Pokémon’s family guide calls Scarlet and Violet approachable, while the official game page cautions that the large open world may feel overwhelming. The deciding factor is whether freedom to choose your direction sounds fun or unfocused to you.

Which Pokémon game is easiest?

There is no comparative beginner-success or difficulty statistic in the official material cited here. Let’s Go is the pair most explicitly positioned as approachable for newcomers, but its catching mechanics differ from the traditional loop. Treat “easiest” as a matter of preferred structure and mechanics, not an objective ranking.

Is Let’s Go like Pokémon GO?

It borrows Pokémon GO’s intuitive, throw-style wild-catching mechanic, but it remains a Pokémon RPG with trainer battles. Expect a familiar adventure in a changed catching format, not a direct copy of the mobile game.

Is Pokémon HOME required?

No. Pokémon HOME is optional collection management, not a prerequisite for playing any of these games. Moving Pokémon between compatible games has restrictions, so do not assume every Pokémon can be transferred freely. Official Pokémon HOME page
