The best Plex alternative depends on what you want to browse. For recommendations and a watchlist across participating streaming apps on your TV, start with Google TV or Android TV’s built-in discovery. To check where a particular title is available, use JustWatch. To browse your own movie and TV collection, use Jellyfin; if you prefer Kodi’s interface, connect it to Jellyfin with one of Jellyfin’s Kodi add-ons.
Choose an alternative based on what you want to find
| Your goal | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Get recommendations and keep a watchlist on the TV | Google TV or Android TV discovery | Tabs, participating apps, and features vary by location and device. |
| Find which service has a particular movie or show | JustWatch | Availability is country-specific; the US catalog is not a guide to every region. |
| Browse and play your own media collection | Jellyfin for Android TV | You need a Jellyfin server set up and running. |
| Browse a Jellyfin collection through Kodi | Jellyfin for Kodi or JellyCon | Both require add-on setup, with different tradeoffs for library syncing and browsing. |
Google TV or Android TV: best for recommendations on the TV
Google’s built-in discovery is the closest fit if you want your TV interface to suggest things to watch and maintain a watchlist. Depending on the device and location, you may see different tabs: Google says Android TV users outside the US may see Discover, while US users may see Home and Free; Google TV uses its own tab names. Titles can come from Google, studios, or participating apps, so the selection is not a universal index of every streaming service.
To improve recommendations, add the streaming services you actually use and put titles you want to remember on your Watchlist. Google says selected services can inform recommendations, and Watchlist titles can help it suggest similar content. Availability and integration still depend on the services and device. See Google’s guides to how Google TV and Android TV work and getting relevant recommendations.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Discovery is only as broad as the services that participate. Google’s streaming-app integration help page explicitly limits the described feature to the US, says it does not support live TV, and notes that a service absent from its list does not work with that feature. Do not assume that a service integration listed for the US is available on your device elsewhere. Google’s streaming-app help page gives the stated limits.

- No More App-Switching. Forget learning to navigate a new screen with every app. TiVo Stream 4K enables one centralized place for searching, browsing, and creating watch lists across all your apps..DC Input Range 5V/1.0A. Power Consumption : Maximum 5 W
- Recommendations Across All of Your Apps: Get rid of the walls between what you watch. TiVo recommends your next favorite shows and movies based on what you love, not where they live.
- Say it and watch it. The power of voice control makes it easy to find shows. Integrated Google Assistant allows you to launch apps, dim the lights and more.
- One place for all your favorite streaming apps. TiVo Stream 4K includes Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Peacock plus many more, so you can get to your shows fast.
- TiVo Stream 4K is one of Time Magazine’s “2020 Best Inventions, Special Mention” and PCMag hails it as “an excellent media streamer for TV lovers.” Operating Temperature 0˚C - 40˚C
Android TV can also surface content from some live-TV providers in the Live tab, recommendations, or search. Google names Haystack News, Plex, Pluto TV, and Tubi as examples; their apps must be installed, and playback is handled by the provider app. This is a useful illustration of system-level discovery, not a promise that every service or channel will appear on every TV. See Google’s Android TV live-TV help.
JustWatch: best for checking where a title is available
Use JustWatch when you already have a movie or show in mind and want to check whether it can be streamed, rented, bought, or watched free through services in your country. Its US TV catalog, for example, offers genre, release-year, price, and rating filters. You can select services and narrow results by price, including free options.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
JustWatch is a catalog and availability guide, not a guarantee that a title will remain on a service. Its US page lists ad-supported sources such as Tubi, Pluto TV, and Freevee among examples for free series, but both free catalogs and individual titles depend on country and current availability. Check your own country’s catalog rather than relying on the US listing: JustWatch’s US TV catalog.

The cited catalog establishes discovery features, not Android TV app compatibility. Treat JustWatch as a guide for finding availability unless you have separately confirmed access on your particular Android TV device.

Jellyfin: best for browsing your own media library
Jellyfin is an option for organizing and browsing a personal collection, not for searching a combined catalog of commercial streaming services. Its Android TV app is a client: you must first set up and run a Jellyfin server, which provides the library the TV app displays and plays. The Google Play listing for Jellyfin for Android TV describes that server requirement and lists an update date of August 16, 2026.
Choose Jellyfin when the thing you want to discover is already in a library you manage. It does not replace Google TV’s participating-app recommendations or JustWatch’s service-availability lookup.

- Built-in Virtual Assistant – just press the mic button on the remote to get what you want

Kodi with Jellyfin: two ways to browse the same library
If you would rather browse through Kodi’s TV-friendly library interface, Jellyfin documents two add-on approaches. They connect Kodi to a Jellyfin server, but handle library information differently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsJellyfin for Kodi
This add-on syncs selected Jellyfin library metadata into Kodi’s local database. Once synced, titles appear in Kodi’s standard Movies and TV Shows views. The tradeoff is that synchronization may take time at startup and can conflict with other uses of Kodi’s database.

JellyCon
JellyCon behaves more like a streaming add-on: it fetches information from the Jellyfin server as you browse rather than fully syncing metadata into Kodi. That avoids a full local metadata sync, but browsing can be slower because it requests information from the server. Jellyfin explains both options in its Kodi client documentation.
Quick Recap
Which option should you use?
- Want suggestions and a watchlist in the TV interface? Try Google TV or Android TV discovery, and check that your services participate in your region.
- Want to know which service has a specific title? Search JustWatch’s catalog for your country; confirm local availability before relying on a result.
- Want to browse files and titles you manage yourself? Set up Jellyfin Server and use its Android TV client.
- Already use Kodi and want your Jellyfin library there? Choose Jellyfin for Kodi for Kodi’s local library views, or JellyCon to browse without a full metadata sync.
