For most teams, start with Playwright Test’s built-in toHaveScreenshot() assertion. It creates a baseline image on the first run and compares later runs against it, so you can add visual regression checks without adopting another service. If you need a hosted review workflow, evaluate Chromatic or Applitools Eyes against representative pages and your team’s approval process. There is no evidence-based universal winner: fit depends on how you manage baselines, stabilize pages, review diffs, and debug failures.

How to choose a Playwright screenshot reporting tool

Visual regression tooling has two related jobs: capture a page consistently, then help you decide whether a difference is an expected change or a defect. Playwright Test can handle capture and comparison in your existing test suite. Hosted products add their own capture, storage, or review workflow; evaluate the exact workflow rather than assuming every product compares images in the same place or way.

  • Setup: Does it fit the Playwright suite and CI environment you already maintain?
  • Capture and comparison: Where are screenshots made and diffs produced?
  • Baselines and approvals: How will your team review and accept intentional changes?
  • Stability: How will you control dynamic content and rendering differences?
  • Debugging: What artifacts and context accompany a failure?
  • Operations: Verify project scale, team controls, current prices, data handling, and retention directly with each vendor.

The available product documentation establishes some integrations and workflows, but not a neutral, like-for-like benchmark or a complete current price comparison.

Start with Playwright Test’s built-in screenshot assertions

Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion generates an expected screenshot when no baseline exists, then compares subsequent captures with that baseline. Baselines are typically stored beside the test in a snapshot directory. Review and commit an initial baseline only after confirming it represents the intended page state.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Example test

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});

Run the test using your project’s normal Playwright Test command. On the first run, inspect the generated reference image and associated test output; on later runs, investigate any reported difference before updating the baseline. Playwright documents named and configured snapshot assertions as well as comparison controls such as maxDiffPixels.

Make the capture repeatable

Playwright warns that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Generate and check screenshots in the same environment wherever possible, including a consistent OS image and browser setup in CI.

Screenshot assertions wait for consecutive captures to match before comparison, but that does not make changing application data deterministic. Keep test data and capture conditions steady. For content expected to vary, use assertion options or a stylesheet mechanism such as stylePath to suppress it; mask or hide only the parts that are intentionally volatile. Overly broad masking can conceal real regressions.

Hosted options with documented Playwright integrations

Option Documented workflow When to evaluate it
Chromatic Chromatic documents an integration that extends Playwright’s test and expect utilities. During a test, it captures a page archive and uploads it to its cloud environment, where it generates snapshots and performs pixel diffing. Chromatic’s Playwright documentation Consider it if you want a hosted review path alongside Playwright tests. Confirm that its capture and review model suits your suite; the documented workflow is vendor information, not an independent comparison.
Applitools Eyes Applitools documents adding Eyes visual checkpoints to existing Playwright tests. Its product materials describe Visual AI noise filtering and DOM/CSS context associated with failures. Applitools Eyes product page Consider it if vendor-provided visual analysis and failure context match your needs. Noise-handling and analysis descriptions are Applitools’ claims; test them on representative pages and known harmless changes rather than assuming universal accuracy.

How to evaluate either hosted workflow

  1. Choose pages that include both stable layouts and realistic dynamic content.
  2. Run the same tests in the CI environment you expect to use, then inspect how the service captures pages and presents differences.
  3. Introduce or identify a known visual change and a benign variation; assess whether reviewers can distinguish them and find useful debugging context.
  4. Before committing, verify current pricing, limits, retention, and data-handling terms directly with the vendor. The cited documentation does not establish those terms or a like-for-like cost comparison.

How Percy and Argos fit into a shortlist

Percy and Argos may be worth investigating when you compare hosted visual testing products, but the available comparison covering Percy, Chromatic, and Argos is authored by Argos itself. Treat it as a source of questions—not neutral proof of feature parity, pricing, limits, or which product is best. Check each vendor’s current documentation and terms before deciding.

ScreenshotNeo as an alternative to try first

If what you need is a screenshot service for captures rather than a hosted visual-regression review workflow, consider ScreenshotNeo. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is not a like-for-like substitute for Playwright baseline assertions or the review workflows described above.

For a one-call capture, use the API. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

Does Playwright Test create a baseline automatically?

Can a screenshot API replace visual regression reporting?

Not necessarily. A screenshot API can capture images, while baseline comparison, change review, and approval workflows are separate requirements to assess.
