For Node.js projects already using Playwright Test, start with Playwright’s built-in expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() assertion. It creates screenshot baselines and compares later runs against them. If you only need an image, use page.screenshot(); it captures but does not itself compare images. For hosted visual-testing workflows, evaluate Percy or Applitools against your requirements. Playwright’s snapshot matching is a Playwright Test runner feature. If your Node.js project uses another runner, use page.screenshot() and connect the image to a separate diff and baseline workflow, or assess a hosted service.
Use Playwright Test for screenshot baselines
Install Playwright Test if it is not already in the project:

The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before saving, which can reduce captures of a changing frame. Baselines are stored in snapshot directories associated with test files.

When a visual change is intentional, update snapshots with the runner:

npx playwright test --update-snapshotsReview the changed image files as you would other code changes. Updating snapshots indiscriminately can make an unintended visual regression the new expected result.
Set tolerances and stabilize volatile content
Use the assertion’s documented threshold options when small rendering differences are acceptable. Playwright’s visual comparison guide also documents a stylesheet option for hiding or stabilizing dynamic elements. Apply those controls narrowly: masking a timestamp or rotating banner may prevent noise, while hiding a large or important region can conceal a real regression. Capture screenshots without visual assertions
Use page.screenshot() when the screenshot itself is the deliverable—for example, to save an artifact or pass image bytes into a custom processor. The API can save to a file, return a buffer, capture the full page, or target an element.

A capture call does not decide whether the image differs from an approved reference: add a separate comparison step if you need visual regression checks. How to choose a visual-testing library or service
Keep capture, comparison, and review distinct
- Capture: Playwright’s
page.screenshot()produces the image. - Comparison:
toHaveScreenshot()or another diff engine determines whether an image differs from a reference. Playwright’s visual comparison documentation identifies pixelmatch as the comparison library it uses; pixelmatch alone does not provide capture, baseline storage, review, or CI integration. - Baseline workflow: Decide how references are generated, reviewed, updated, and stored. Playwright Test ties snapshots to test files and provides an update command.
- Runner fit: Playwright’s snapshot assertions integrate with Playwright Test. A separate library may fit better when the project uses another runner or a custom image pipeline.
Hosted options to assess
Percy has a documented Playwright integration in its @percy/playwright package page. Applitools lists Playwright among supported frameworks in its vendor-produced visual testing tools comparison. That comparison reflects Applitools’ own claims, not independent testing. Available evidence does not establish which is best or what either currently costs. Confirm current browser support, integrations, review process, limits, pricing, and data handling with the vendors before choosing.

Keep browser environments consistent
Playwright warns that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Create and run baselines in aligned environments—especially in CI—and keep browser versions and relevant settings stable. Otherwise, environment differences may create failures that are not caused by an application change.
