Use an encoder-fed YouTube Live stream—not a YouTube video playlist—to broadcast music continuously. For most conventional setups, RTMPS is the practical default. HLS is an alternative for compatible workflows that need its codec options, but it requires segmented output and has higher latency. A YouTube playlist organizes published videos; it does not send a live broadcast.
Two different things are called a playlist
A YouTube video playlist groups videos already published on your channel—for example, archived radio sessions or highlight clips. It does not play files into a live broadcast. To go live, an encoder sends your program to YouTube using an ingestion protocol such as RTMPS or HLS. YouTube’s overview explains the encoder workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
HLS also uses a playlist, but that is a rolling media manifest used by the encoder to deliver segments. It is not a channel playlist that viewers browse. Keeping these meanings separate is the key to choosing the right setup.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure form of RTMP, for standard encoder ingestion. Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in your encoder. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.

For a conventional SDR, audio-led program, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Its documented stereo audio settings include 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. Check the current guidance for the resolution and bitrate that suit your output: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. These are incoming encoder settings; YouTube transcodes the stream for playback across viewers’ devices and network conditions.
RTMPS is usually the simpler choice when your encoder supports YouTube’s conventional settings. It avoids the extra segment and rolling-manifest configuration required by HLS.

Use HLS only when your workflow calls for it
HLS can suit an encoder or production workflow that needs HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. It is not a general-purpose YouTube playlist setting, and YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Use it when your encoder and requirements call for HLS, not simply because the word “playlist” appears in the setup.
HLS requirements to configure
- Send MPEG-TS segments over HTTPS using POST or PUT.
- Set each segment duration between 1 and 4 seconds.
- Maintain a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Do not use byte ranges; YouTube’s HLS setup does not support them.

Plan a 24/7 stream as an operation, not a format setting
Test the complete path before relying on it
Run a representative test with the music and any visuals you intend to use. Check the stream preview and health in Live Control Room, confirm that audio is clean, and verify that the encoder reconnects as expected. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and allowing 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; see Streaming tips.
Decide how DVR and archives should work
Choose whether viewers should be able to pause or rewind using DVR, and decide how you will handle recordings and restarts. YouTube documents DVR controls in Manage live stream settings. Its encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but the cited guidance does not establish an unlimited duration for a single uninterrupted 24/7 event. Verify current event-duration behavior and test your restart and archive plan rather than assuming one event will run indefinitely.

Keep rights separate from technical setup
A working encoder does not grant permission to broadcast music. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the actual recordings and compositions, intended territories, and monetization plans. No technical stream format clears a catalog. Also review YouTube’s current policies and any rights-holder restrictions that apply to your content.

Organize published videos after the broadcast
