There are no fully automated personal vehicles for sale to U.S. consumers in 2026. NHTSA says every vehicle currently for sale requires the driver’s full attention. The closest options are cars with driver-assistance features, which still require an attentive driver, and robotaxi services, which provide rides in limited operating areas rather than a car to own. [NHTSA]
What “personal autonomous vehicle” means in 2026
A fully automated vehicle performs the driving task without requiring a human to supervise it in its operating conditions. That is different from driver assistance, which can help with parts of driving but leaves responsibility with the driver. NHTSA cautions that calling driver-assistance features “self-driving” can imply capabilities they do not provide.
NHTSA puts the availability question plainly: “Vehicles with an automated driving system, which some refer to as ‘self-driving’ cars, are a future technology – not a technology you’re able to purchase and use today.” [NHTSA Automated Vehicle Safety guidance]

Cars with driver assistance
These are the nearest purchasable alternative, but they are not autonomous vehicles. Before choosing one, check which driving tasks its system supports, the roads and conditions where it can operate, and whether it requires continuous driver supervision. The driver must remain attentive and ready to take over; assistance features do not make the vehicle a hands-off personal car.
NHTSA reported that a later-release 2026 Tesla Model Y was the first vehicle model to pass its newly added Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) benchmark under the New Car Assessment Program. This is a specific benchmark result, not a finding that the Model Y is fully autonomous or the best vehicle overall. [NHTSA ADAS benchmark announcement]
There is no supported apples-to-apples “best” ranking or current comparative price list here. For a purchase decision, compare the exact model and trim, feature limits, driver-monitoring requirements, and current price using the manufacturer’s documentation and dealer information. Treat safety evidence according to its source: a regulator’s test, a manufacturer’s disclosure, and independent evidence are not interchangeable.
Robotaxi services
A robotaxi can offer a fully autonomous ride within its service area, but it is a ride service, not a personal vehicle available to buy. Waymo says its sixth-generation Driver is entering fully autonomous operations and reports nearly 200 million fully autonomous miles across the densest parts of more than 10 major cities. Those are company-reported figures about the experience informing that system, not independent validation or a direct comparison with another provider. Waymo describes a sensing suite combining cameras, imaging radar, and lidar. [Waymo sixth-generation Driver]

Availability depends on where a service is permitted to operate and under what conditions. California, for example, keeps separate records for testing permits, driverless testing, and deployment, including approved locations and operating conditions. Check the live registry and the operator’s service map for current availability rather than assuming a service covers an entire city or region. [California DMV autonomous vehicle permit records]

How to judge claims about autonomy
- Identify the task: Does the system assist with a specific driving task, or operate without a human driver within defined conditions?
- Check the operating domain: Roads, speeds, weather, and geography all affect where a system can work.
- Confirm the human role: Determine whether the driver must monitor continuously, remain ready to intervene, or is not required to supervise during a defined driverless operation.
- Separate evidence types: A test result, a company’s mileage claim, and a company safety disclosure do not carry the same evidentiary weight.
NHTSA’s voluntary safety self-assessment index contains company disclosures for automated driving systems at SAE Levels 3–5. NHTSA explicitly says inclusion in the index is not federal endorsement or approval; a disclosure should not be described as certification. [NHTSA voluntary safety self-assessment index]

Mercedes-Benz has announced a planned Level 4 robotaxi ecosystem based on the S-Class with NVIDIA and Uber, along with a separate project involving Momenta and mobility provider Lumo. The company said initial S-Class robotaxi test vehicles were planned for Abu Dhabi later in 2026. That is a future-program announcement, not evidence that consumers can buy an autonomous S-Class. Mercedes-Benz’s Jörg Burzer described the roadmap this way: “The next step on our roadmap is to enable a robotaxi experience based on the new S Class.” [Mercedes-Benz robotaxi announcement]

Federal policy is also evolving. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Strategy for Automated Vehicles sets out federal goals and activities for fiscal years 2026–2030. NHTSA says it is updating automated-vehicle guidance on topics including emergency-responder interactions, safety management systems, remote assistance, and post-crash behavior. These policy efforts are not an announcement that autonomous personal cars are available for purchase. Why autonomy claims are easy to misunderstand
Consumer understanding is improving but not universal. JD Power’s 2026 Mobility Confidence Index found that 58% of consumers correctly identified full automation, up from 43% in 2024. The 2026 study collected data in April from 2,898 U.S. vehicle owners aged 18 or older. This measures understanding, not vehicle safety or capability. [JD Power 2026 Mobility Confidence Index]
