The best website performance testing tool depends on what you need to learn. Start with Google PageSpeed Insights for a page-level report that combines simulated Lighthouse diagnostics with available real-user data. Use Lighthouse for focused audits, WebPageTest for configurable tests and visual analysis, GTmetrix for reports and recurring monitoring, and Grafana k6 when you need scripted browser journeys and automated thresholds. These tools answer different questions, so compare results only when device, browser, network, location, and cache conditions are reasonably alike.
Which website performance testing tool should you use?
| Tool | Best for | What it shows | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google PageSpeed Insights | A free starting point for checking an individual URL | Lighthouse lab diagnostics and, when enough observations exist, Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) field data. It provides mobile and desktop analyses. | Field data can be unavailable for a URL or shown at the origin level. The lab run is a simulation, not a recording of your actual visitors. |
| Google Lighthouse | Focused audits and repeatable local or automated checks | Performance and other page-quality audits in DevTools, PageSpeed Insights, the command line, or Node workflows. | A simulated run without user interaction cannot directly measure INP. |
| WebPageTest | Detailed synthetic tests and visual diagnosis | Configurable browser and location tests, Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals reports, and visual comparisons. Its documentation also describes Pro API and experiment features. | Match test location and profile when comparing results across services. Features and plans may change. |
| GTmetrix | Readable reports and ongoing monitoring | Lighthouse-powered reports, CrUX metrics, waterfalls, visual load playback, scheduled monitoring, and alerts. Additional locations and API access depend on plan. | Its grade and structure metrics are product-specific, not a universal standard. |
| Grafana k6 browser module | Scripted browser journeys and automated thresholds | Browser LCP, INP, and CLS metrics, with threshold checks for workflows you script. | Results depend on script design, navigation behavior, aggregation, and version; this is not the same workflow as entering one URL in an audit tool. |
For screenshot generation rather than performance diagnosis, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is a useful alternative when you need screenshots in a developer or AI-agent workflow, not a substitute for Web Vitals, load testing, or performance reports.
How do you test website speed without confusing lab and field data?
Use PageSpeed Insights for a page-level starting point
Enter a page URL in PageSpeed Insights. Its lab section uses Lighthouse to simulate a page load and surface diagnostic opportunities. Its field section uses CrUX data from real Chrome users when sufficient samples are available. Check whether the field report is for the specific URL or aggregated at the origin level, and review mobile and desktop separately.
Field data and lab data serve different purposes: field data describes sampled users’ experiences, while a lab run helps investigate likely causes under a controlled simulation. A good Lighthouse lab score does not guarantee that real visitors have a good experience.

Use Lighthouse for focused audits
Run Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools for an interactive audit, or use its documented command-line or Node.js entry points when you want a repeatable workflow. Keep the tested page, browser setup, and conditions consistent between runs. Lighthouse audits performance as well as other page-quality categories, but a simulated run without user input cannot directly measure INP.
Use WebPageTest or GTmetrix to inspect the load
Choose WebPageTest when you need control over browser and location settings and want visual comparisons of how a page loads. Choose GTmetrix when its report format, waterfall, visual playback, scheduled monitoring, or alerts fit your ongoing review. Treat each service’s composite grade as its own presentation of results; inspect the underlying measurements and test conditions before comparing.
Use k6 for scripted user journeys
A one-page audit is not a concurrency test. With Grafana k6’s browser module, a team can script a browser workflow, collect browser Web Vitals metrics, and define thresholds in an automated workflow. That requires a script and a clear definition of the journey being measured. Teams investigating server behavior under many simultaneous users need a workload and load-testing plan in addition to page-audit tools.

What are the Core Web Vitals, and what counts as good?
Google’s current Core Web Vitals guidance, last updated May 7, 2025, identifies three measures of loading, responsiveness, and visual stability. The good thresholds are evaluated at the 75th percentile, separately for mobile and desktop—not by relying on an average or one test run.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Metric | What it represents | Good threshold |
|---|---|---|
| LCP | When the largest visible content element renders | 2.5 seconds or less |
| INP | Responsiveness to user interaction | 200 milliseconds or less |
| CLS | Unexpected visual movement | 0.1 or less |
A page or site passes the Core Web Vitals assessment when the 75th-percentile values for all three metrics are in the good range, subject to Google’s published data-availability rules. See Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance for threshold and assessment details. Lab tools can help diagnose a problem; field measurements are needed to understand the experience of sampled users.
Why do PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix show different scores?
Different scores do not necessarily mean either service is wrong. Results can vary because the tools may use different locations, browser or device profiles, network conditions, cache states, measurement methods, and run timings. GTmetrix also presents product-specific grade and structure metrics, which are not interchangeable with another vendor’s composite score.

- Compare the same URL and page state.
- Match device, browser, network, location, and cache conditions as closely as the tools allow.
- Repeat a test when one result seems surprising instead of treating a single run as definitive.
- Use field data for sampled visitor experience and lab diagnostics to investigate likely causes; do not treat either as a replacement for the other.
How should you choose and use a testing workflow?
- Define the question. For real-user experience, look for field data; for likely causes on one page, run a lab audit; for visual load behavior, use a tool with visual comparisons; for an automated browser journey, script it.
- Start with the relevant page and device. PageSpeed Insights is a practical first check for a URL. Review mobile and desktop results rather than assuming one represents the other.
- Check whether field data is available and what it covers. Note whether CrUX data is missing or applies at origin level rather than to the exact URL.
- Investigate the relevant measurement. Use a Lighthouse diagnostic for a simulated page-load issue, a waterfall or visual playback to inspect sequence and timing, or a scripted k6 workflow for a journey and threshold.
- Repeat comparable runs. Keep conditions as similar as practicable and use repeated results to distinguish a consistent issue from run variability.
- Track real-user outcomes separately. Judge Core Web Vitals with the 75th percentile and separate mobile and desktop field data when available.
Or skip the browser setup
When the requirement is to generate a screenshot rather than measure performance, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Example cURL request (replace the URL as needed): curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
Common performance testing problems and fixes
PageSpeed Insights has no field data
CrUX may not have enough observations for that URL. Check whether PageSpeed Insights provides origin-level field data; if it does not, use lab diagnostics to investigate the page and avoid presenting the lab result as visitor data.
INP is missing from a lab report
INP depends on user interactions. A simulated run without user input cannot measure it directly. Use available field data for real-user responsiveness or a browser workflow that exercises the interactions you need to assess.

A score changes between runs
Test conditions and run variability can affect results. Align the browser, device, network, location, and cache setup where possible, then repeat the run before drawing a conclusion.
A composite grade conflicts with a metric you care about
Grades are product-specific summaries. Check the underlying metric, its measurement context, and whether it is lab or field data rather than treating different vendors’ grades as equivalent.

A page audit looks fine but the site struggles under load
A page audit examines a page load, not many simultaneous users. Define a workload and use an appropriate load-testing plan; use scripted browser checks when you also need to measure a user journey.
