For a porch, patio, pergola, or deck, smart string lights are usually the natural fit: they make the bulbs part of the display and can add color or tunable white light. For a roofline or façade you want decorated year-round, choose a permanent outdoor system instead. The right pick depends on the run length, exposure, mounting surface, and smart-home setup—not on a universal brightness or color winner.
Choose string lights or a permanent roofline system
Smart string lights for patios and porches
String lights suit spaces where visible bulbs contribute to the look. Philips Hue positions its 22-foot Festavia Globe string for patios and porches, while Nanoleaf’s Outdoor String Lights are aimed at coverage across patios, pergolas, and decks. Compare the actual run length and bulb spacing with your mounting points before choosing a kit.
Permanent lights for eaves and façades
Permanent systems are intended for rooflines or other exterior runs that stay installed. Philips Hue Festavia Permanent and Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights Prism are options in this category. They call for a different installation plan than a removable string: measure the full route, consider the power and controller locations, and check cut, splice, and extension rules before mounting.

Check weather protection for every component
An outdoor rating for the lights does not automatically apply to the controller or power supply. Nanoleaf lists IP65 for the string, IP67 for the controller, and IP44 for the supply; it advises against submersion and exposure to flooding or severe storms. Govee lists IP68 for Prism lights and IP67 for the control box, and specifies an outdoor-use adapter. Philips Hue lists IP65 for Festavia Permanent. Follow each product’s placement and installation instructions, and assess the rating of the component that will actually face the elements.

Plan the run before cutting, extending, or mounting
Measure the route and identify where the supply and controller can go before attaching lights. A nominal kit length does not tell you whether its wiring and connection points will suit corners, gaps, or your power location.
- Hue Festavia Permanent: The 90-foot set has 48 lights and is cuttable. Philips Hue says the string can be extended only with its end connector; after cutting, it cannot be extended. The set includes 3M VHB adhesive tape, and Hue recommends screws for long-term installation.
- Govee Prism: The manufacturer lists the lights as cuttable, spliceable, and extendable. Plan and test the layout before permanent mounting.
- Nanoleaf Outdoor String Lights: The string can expand up to 147 feet using expansion packs. Check the kit and expansion lengths needed for your route.
Match the smart lights to your home setup
Check compatibility for the exact model or SKU before purchasing; products from one brand can have different requirements. Hue lists Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, Matter, and other integrations for Festavia Permanent, and states that a Bridge is required. Nanoleaf supports Matter integration with a compatible Matter hub. Govee lists Matter, Alexa, and Google Assistant control for Prism. The Festavia Globe page lists Hue app, Bluetooth/Zigbee, and smart-home integrations; verify the requirements for that specific product rather than assuming they match the permanent system.

Read brightness and color specifications in context
The manufacturers list up to 50 lumens per Hue Festavia Permanent light, 40 lumens per Govee Prism light, and up to 2,200 lumens for Nanoleaf’s 30-meter kit. These figures are not directly comparable measures of how bright a real porch will look: bulb spacing, placement, optics, and ambient light all affect the result. Nanoleaf’s RGBICW bulbs offer individually addressable color and tunable white; Hue and Govee also describe color and white-light effects. Choose based on the effect you want and the space you need to cover, not on a lumen number alone.

- Choose a decorative string format if the bulbs should be visible over a porch, patio, pergola, or deck; compare the Hue Globe and Nanoleaf kits against your measured run.
- Choose a permanent system for a roofline or façade, then confirm its ecosystem requirement, component ratings, power placement, and cut or extension rules.
- Check the mounting surface and plan a secure installation appropriate to the product and exposure. For Hue Festavia Permanent, the manufacturer recommends screws for a long-term installation.
