Selenium is a strong fit for teams using WebDriver, multiple language bindings, or distributed execution through Grid; Puppeteer suits JavaScript developers focused on Chrome or Firefox automation; and Cypress is worth considering when its current workflow and support matrix match your application. The right choice depends on your browser, language, testing, and infrastructure needs—not a universal speed ranking.
What counts as a web automation tool?
These projects overlap, but they are not the same kind of product. Playwright includes an end-to-end test runner as well as browser automation capabilities. Selenium is an umbrella project centered on WebDriver and its ecosystem. Puppeteer is a JavaScript browser-control library. Cypress is a browser application-testing project. Compare them by the job you need done rather than treating every feature as interchangeable.
For this guide, “open-source” refers to the projects’ publicly available software and project documentation. The comparison is based on project documentation checked on October 3, 2026; versions, browser support, and installation behavior can change, so confirm the current documentation for the version you plan to use.
Which tool should you shortlist first?
| Tool | Good fit when | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright | You want a cohesive end-to-end test runner, cross-engine coverage, or debugging and agent-oriented workflows. | One API for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; listed language options include TypeScript, Python, .NET, and Java. |
| Selenium | Your team already uses WebDriver, needs several language bindings, or must distribute browser execution across machines. | WebDriver-centered project with Selenium Manager for driver and browser management and Grid for distributed execution. |
| Puppeteer | You work in JavaScript and want a focused library for Chrome- or Firefox-centered automation. | Browser control through the DevTools Protocol or WebDriver BiDi; package choice affects Chrome installation. |
| Cypress | Your team prefers its application-testing workflow and confirms that its current support matrix fits your needs. | The project is browser application testing software; verify current browser and language details in its documentation. |
This is a fit-based shortlist, not a claim that one project is universally fastest, most reliable, or cheapest. A reviewed comparison explicitly says it is not an independent apples-to-apples benchmark of speed, reliability, or cost efficiency. [comparison guide]

When Playwright fits
- You need Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit coverage through a common API.
- Your team can use one of its listed language options.
- You want a test runner and its integrated tracing, isolation, and parallel-run features.
- You are exploring scripted or agent-driven browser workflows as well as tests.
What to verify
- Confirm the exact browser versions and operating systems you must support against the current Playwright documentation.
- Check the language and integration choices your team can maintain.
- Estimate the effort of maintaining your actual suite; feature lists alone do not predict that cost.
Selenium: WebDriver, language choice, and Grid
Selenium calls itself an umbrella project for tools and libraries that automate browsers. WebDriver is its core interface, designed to support browser automation through a common set of instructions. The project documentation also covers Selenium Manager, which helps manage drivers and browsers, and Selenium Grid, which distributes test execution across machines. Examples and bindings span Java, Python, C#, Ruby, JavaScript, and Kotlin. [Selenium documentation]
When Selenium fits
- Your existing tests or infrastructure already use WebDriver.
- Your organization needs language options beyond a JavaScript-centered library.
- You need to allocate or distribute browser runs across machines with Grid.
- You value the broader Selenium ecosystem, including its current browser-management and agent-related documentation.
Assess the setup and maintenance of your particular Grid and browser environment rather than assuming Selenium is either obsolete or automatically the best choice for large suites.

Puppeteer: a focused JavaScript browser library
Puppeteer provides a high-level JavaScript API for Chrome or Firefox over the DevTools Protocol or WebDriver BiDi. Its examples cover navigation, keyboard input, and locators. [Puppeteer documentation]
Choose the package that matches your install needs
npm i puppeteerdownloads a compatible Chrome during installation.puppeteer-coreinstalls the library without downloading Chrome; plan separately for the browser that your environment will use.
This package distinction affects setup and runtime readiness, especially in CI. Check the current documentation for your target browser and deployment environment. Puppeteer’s documented browser coverage is not identical to Playwright’s, so verify the exact engine and version combination you require.

Cypress: validate the workflow and support matrix
Cypress presents itself as browser application testing software. Its repository provides installation commands for macOS, Linux, and Windows and identifies the repository license as MIT. [Cypress repository]
Before adopting Cypress, check its current official documentation for the browser and language details relevant to your project. The repository information cited here does not establish a sufficiently detailed current browser and language matrix for a reliable side-by-side claim. Select it when its workflow and verified support fit your application, not on an unverified assumption about speed or browser limitations.

How to choose for your project
- List required browsers. Decide whether you need Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, particular branded browsers, or a broader real-device matrix. Confirm exact versions and operating systems in each project’s current documentation.
- Set the language constraint. Match the team’s existing skills and test codebase against the project’s supported language options. Puppeteer is JavaScript-focused; Playwright lists TypeScript, Python, .NET, and Java; Selenium documentation shows a wider range of bindings.
- Choose the product shape. Decide whether you need a full test runner, a browser-control library, a WebDriver-based ecosystem, or an application-testing workflow.
- Inspect debugging and isolation. Check the current project version for traces, screenshots, logs, retries, local debugging tools, and how browser contexts or sessions are isolated.
- Plan execution infrastructure. Decide whether tests run locally, in your CI, through Selenium Grid, or on a hosted browser service. Include browser installation and allocation in the plan.
- Benchmark only if performance will decide. Run the same workflows with pinned versions and comparable configurations in your own environment. The available comparison does not establish an apples-to-apples speed or reliability winner.
Performance, reliability, and operating cost
No stable, decision-relevant speed, reliability, or cost statistic was established in the project documentation reviewed for this comparison. Live repository counters such as stars do not measure suitability. Tool capabilities—such as auto-waiting, isolated contexts, or Grid—are useful evaluation criteria, not substitutes for testing the workload and infrastructure you intend to run.
For cost, account for engineering time, browser and CI capacity, and any hosted execution you choose. The projects’ open-source status does not by itself settle those operating costs. If hosted cross-browser execution is part of your plan, evaluate providers separately and verify their current offerings and terms.
Screenshot an existing page without building browser automation
If your immediate task is to capture a website rather than build a test suite or browser-control workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is an alternative to try first for that narrower job: one GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is not a replacement for the testing frameworks above.
Or skip the browser setup
Make a screenshot request with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the target URL with the page you need to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie or consent banners are accepted like a visitor and 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
