OBS Studio is the best overall open-source screen recorder for YouTube if you want to capture a screen or app, control narration and other audio, combine multiple sources, and keep the option to stream from the same setup. It is flexible enough for a repeatable recording workflow, though a first-time user must configure sources, audio, and output settings.
Which open-source screen recorder should you choose?
| Software | Best fit | What it offers | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Creators who want a reusable recording setup with room to grow | Display or application capture, multiple visual sources, audio controls, recording, and live streaming. OBS describes the software as free and open-source. OBS Project and its project repository document its core capabilities. | More choices to configure than a basic one-click recorder. No controlled head-to-head test establishes it as the easiest or fastest option. |
| ShareX | Windows users who want configurable area capture and automation | Its project description lists screen-area captures, video or GIF recording, hotkeys, and automated post-capture actions. | It is described as a Windows application, not a cross-platform alternative to OBS. |
| Kdenlive ScreenGrab | Editors who want screen capture within an editing workflow | The Kdenlive 26.08 manual documents screen capture through FFmpeg. | The manual warns that screen capture with the “x246-with-audio” setting may crash. Treat this as a capture capability inside an editor, not a universal simple dedicated recorder. |
For a YouTube tutorial with screen visuals and narration, start with OBS if you want control over sources and audio in one application. Choose ShareX if you use Windows and prioritize quick, configurable captures or automated actions. Consider Kdenlive if capture is one part of an editing workflow you already use.
These are feature-based recommendations, not measured rankings: the official materials reviewed do not provide a controlled performance comparison. Before choosing, consider your operating system, setup simplicity, capture sources, audio needs, and whether recording or editing is your main task.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If this is your first recording, use OBS’s simple output mode and presets as a starting point rather than adjusting every encoder option at once. OBS’s help portal points new recorders toward that route. Available capture methods and codec options can vary with OBS releases, operating system, and hardware.
Add the screen and audio you need
- Choose a capture source. Add the display or application you want to show. If your video needs more than one visual element, OBS can combine multiple sources in a scene.
- Set up narration. Select your microphone in the audio controls and check that its level responds when you speak. OBS supports microphone or auxiliary devices; an existing built-in or other microphone may be adequate.
- Check other audio. If the recording should include system audio as well as narration, confirm that both are present in the audio controls. A screen capture without the intended sound is easy to miss until editing.
- Choose the output dimensions and recording preset. Match the recording to your intended video and the capacity of your computer. OBS documents high-quality, indistinguishable-quality, lossless, and same-as-stream recording presets. Higher quality can mean larger files and more resource demand; lossless recording can generate very large files and may affect performance. The right choice depends on your hardware and workflow, not a universal quality ranking. OBS’s recording-settings guide explains the available settings.
Select a recording format: recovery or compatibility
OBS recommends MKV when protecting a recording from an unexpected stop matters. Its documentation says MKV supports OBS encoder combinations and is recoverable after an interrupted recording. MP4 or MOV generally work better with editing software and upload workflows, but a write interruption may leave them unrecoverable. This is a trade-off between resilience and compatibility, not a setting that is best for every creator. OBS’s formats guide covers the distinctions.

Make a short test before recording a full video
Record a brief sample and check the picture, narration, system audio if needed, and whether your editing software accepts the file. This catches source-selection and workflow problems before they affect a long session. It is practical advice, not a claim that one preset or encoder has been tested on your hardware.

What matters when recording for YouTube
Make the recording useful, not merely complete
- Capture only the display or app needed for the lesson; verify the chosen source before beginning.
- Listen to a sample with headphones or on the device you plan to use for review, so narration and other audio are both audible.
- Leave enough storage for the session. Recording quality and encoder choices affect file size, and lossless files can be especially large.
- Keep a recoverable recording format if an interrupted session would be costly; choose a more editing-friendly format when compatibility is the priority.
Keep YouTube policy separate from recording settings
Recording software does not grant rights to music, footage, or other material captured on screen. Use content you have permission to publish, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content. Whether reused material is permitted or monetizable depends on the content and YouTube’s rules; an OBS setting cannot settle that question.
Common recording problems and what to check
- The video has no narration: confirm the intended microphone is selected and that its level responds in OBS; check the short test recording before a full session.
- System audio is missing or narration is hard to hear: review the audio sources and listen to a sample. Do not assume that selecting a screen source also captures every sound you intend to include.
- The recording is too large or the computer struggles: reconsider the quality preset and recording choices. OBS notes that higher-quality settings can increase file size and resource demands, and lossless recordings can be very large.
- A crash or interruption leaves a file that will not open: for future sessions, consider MKV, which OBS recommends for resilience and says is recoverable after interruption. If you need MP4, OBS can remux MKV recordings in the application.
- Kdenlive ScreenGrab crashes with audio: the Kdenlive 26.08 manual cautions that the “x246-with-audio” setting may crash. Choose another available capture path rather than treating that option as reliable for every setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS is for recording your screen and can also stream; it is not a way to keep an uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream after you turn off your computer. For that separate job, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping on YouTube from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
