For most people, LM Studio is the best place to start. It combines a desktop chat interface, downloadable local models, document chat, and an OpenAI-compatible local server. Once the model files are on your computer, its documentation says chat, document retrieval, and the local server can run without an internet connection.

Choose AnythingLLM instead when your work revolves around several document collections and persistent workspaces. Choose Ollama when you need a local runtime that an editor, script, or coding agent can call. GPT4All is a good straightforward option for local chat and document work. None is a universal winner: the right choice depends on your workflow, hardware, storage, and how strictly you need to control data.

Quick verdict

Assistant Best fit What it does locally Main trade-off
LM Studio General writing, private document chat, and a graphical desktop app Runs downloaded models, document retrieval, and a local OpenAI-compatible server Less focused on long-lived multi-workspace knowledge bases than a dedicated RAG workspace
AnythingLLM Organizing multiple document collections into workspaces Local model, embeddings, vector database, and retrieval workflow More components to configure and understand
Ollama Developers, scripts, editors, and coding agents Local model runtime and API It is primarily a backend, not a complete writing or document application
GPT4All Simple local chat and a basic document workflow Local models, local embeddings, LocalDocs, and an optional OpenAI-compatible server Less structured than a workspace-first document system

Official documentation describes features, APIs, and hardware guidance, but there is no common independent benchmark covering writing quality, coding performance, and document accuracy across all four. Treat the table as a workflow guide, not a speed or quality ranking.

What “offline AI” actually means

Offline normally means after you have downloaded the application, model files, and any required embedding files. The initial download requires a connection. After that, the model can generate responses on your computer instead of sending prompts to a hosted service.

LM Studio states that once an LLM is on your machine, it runs locally and should work entirely offline. Its documentation also says document processing is local and that uploaded material does not leave the application. GPT4All similarly documents local models and local embeddings. AnythingLLM can use a local provider and store its workspace data locally. Ollama exposes a local runtime and API.

Offline does not automatically mean that every feature is disconnected. A desktop application may still offer optional cloud providers, update checks, model catalogs, telemetry controls, or integrations. If strict isolation matters, download everything first, disable optional remote providers, block the application at the firewall, and test with networking disabled.

How local document analysis works

Local document chat is usually retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), not a model memorizing an entire file in one operation. The application reads your files, splits text into passages, converts those passages into numerical embeddings, stores them in an index, retrieves passages related to your question, and places the retrieved text in the model’s prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The components

  • Parser: extracts text from supported PDFs, office files, plain text, or other formats. Scanned pages may need OCR before useful text can be retrieved.
  • Embedder: converts passages and your question into vectors so related content can be found. AnythingLLM explicitly identifies the embedder as a separate part of its stack.
  • Vector database: stores the vectors and metadata needed to locate matching passages. AnythingLLM documents this as another distinct component.
  • Generator: the local language model writes an answer from the retrieved passages and your instructions.

RAG improves access to a large document set, but it does not guarantee correct answers. Retrieval can miss a relevant passage, tables can be parsed badly, and the model can still misread or invent an answer. Ask for page or section references, inspect the cited passage, and keep the original file available for verification.

When each application is strongest for documents

LM Studio is the easiest starting point when you want to open a document and ask questions without assembling a separate stack. Its local processing and local server make it suitable for private notes, reports, and drafting from source material.

AnythingLLM is better when documents belong to distinct projects. Its workspace approach lets you keep separate collections and retrieval contexts, while its configurable model, embedder, and vector database let you tune the system as your corpus grows.

Ollama does not by itself provide the document interface. Pair it with a RAG client or application that can call its local API, and choose where parsing, embeddings, indexing, and citations are handled.

Which assistant to choose

LM Studio: best all-round desktop starting point

Use LM Studio if you want one graphical application for downloading models, chatting, working with documents, and exposing a local API. Its server accepts OpenAI-compatible requests while remaining local, which makes it useful both for a person at a keyboard and for another application that expects that API style.

  • Choose it for: writing drafts, rewriting text, summarizing private files, and experimenting with local models.
  • Why it is easy: the interface keeps model discovery, downloads, chat, document interaction, and server controls in one place.
  • Watch for: model downloads consume storage, and a model that fits on disk may still be too large or slow for your available RAM or GPU.

AnythingLLM: best for organized document workspaces

AnythingLLM is the strongest fit when the central task is asking questions across several document collections. Its documented architecture combines a local LLM, an embedder, and a vector database. Its built-in provider runs GGUF models through Lemonade or llama.cpp and documents CPU, Vulkan, CUDA, Metal, and selected AMD NPU paths.

  • Choose it for: separate workspaces for clients, projects, manuals, policies, or research archives.
  • Why it is useful: retrieval and source organization are first-class parts of the workflow rather than an afterthought.
  • Watch for: you must understand which model, embedder, and vector store are active, and whether a workspace is using a local or optional external provider.

Ollama: best local backend for developers

Ollama is a runtime that downloads and serves models locally. Its quickstart documents commands for running models, model downloads, and an API. That makes it a natural backend for an editor extension, a script, a coding agent, or a custom RAG application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose it for: repeatable development workflows, shell scripts, local services, and tools that can call an HTTP API.
  • Why it is useful: the runtime boundary is clear; your client can be replaced without rebuilding the model layer.
  • Watch for: you still need a user interface, document index, or coding client for tasks beyond basic model calls.

GPT4All: best for simple local chat and files

GPT4All focuses on approachable local chat and documents. Its documentation describes local embeddings and a LocalDocs workflow. It also documents server mode with an OpenAI-compatible API, so a compatible client can use it as a local service.

  • Experience the benefits of a PC Memory Upgrade with the ability to run more demanding applications simultaneously, and at faster speeds, for a better, smoother, computing experience
  • High performance DDR4 Laptop Memory designed for PC enthusiasts and gamers
  • Exceptional performance with a frequency speed of 3200MHz (PC4-25600), and backwards compatible with lower frequencies (2933MHz, 2666MHz, 2400MHz and 2133MHz)
  • DDR4 260 Pin Non-ECC SODIMM, Timing 22-22-22, CAS Latency of 22, 1.2 Volts
  • Choose it for: a small personal document collection, straightforward drafting, and a low-complexity desktop experience.
  • Concrete storage example: GPT4All documents a 4.66 GB Meta-Llama-3-8B-Instruct.Q4_0.gguf model example. That is the model file alone, before additional models, indexes, or source documents.
  • Watch for: local embeddings and downloaded models still require storage and memory, even when the chat window looks lightweight.

Hardware and storage requirements

Model size, quantization, context length, embedding resources, and whether inference uses a CPU or GPU all affect the experience. A larger parameter count is not automatically better for your particular writing or coding task; it may simply require more memory and run more slowly.

Resource Published guidance or example How to interpret it
System RAM AnythingLLM lists 16 GB RAM as a recommended baseline in its 2026 guidance A sensible target for a general local document and chat workload, not a universal minimum for every model
CPU AnythingLLM lists an 8-core CPU as a recommended baseline in its 2026 guidance More cores can help CPU inference and indexing, but the actual result depends on the model and software path
GPU VRAM on Windows AnythingLLM recommends 8–12 GB or more for acceleration Relevant when the chosen runtime and model support GPU offload; otherwise the workload may remain CPU-bound
Model storage GPT4All documents a 4.66 GB model example; Ollama documents 4.1 GB and 4.5 GB examples Several models can consume tens of gigabytes before document indexes and source files are counted

RAM, VRAM, and disk are different limits

  • Disk space holds model files, embedding models, indexes, logs, and source documents.
  • RAM holds the running model and application state when inference uses the CPU or shared memory.
  • VRAM holds model layers and working data when a compatible GPU accelerates inference.

A 4.66 GB file does not mean the computer needs exactly 4.66 GB of free RAM. The runtime needs additional working memory, and longer context windows or simultaneous applications increase demand. Leave headroom rather than filling memory to its limit.

Setup: a reliable offline-first process

  1. Inventory the computer. Record installed RAM, CPU cores, available disk space, GPU model and VRAM, and operating system. Close applications that compete for memory during your first test.
  2. Download while connected. Install the chosen application and download one model whose file size fits your storage plan. Download any embedding model or runtime component required for document features.
  3. Start with a modest model. Confirm that chat works before adding a larger model or a large document collection. A smaller model that responds reliably is more useful than an oversized model that constantly swaps memory.
  4. Test the exact workflow offline. Disconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or apply a temporary firewall block, then launch the application, chat with the model, open a local document, and run the local API if you need it.
  5. Check data locations. Identify where models, source files, embeddings, vector indexes, and logs are stored. Encrypt the drive or the relevant folders if the documents are sensitive.
  6. Add complexity gradually. Introduce a second model, larger files, or an editor integration only after the basic offline test succeeds.

LM Studio setup

  1. Install LM Studio while connected and download a compatible local model.
  2. Open a new chat and verify that responses continue after you disable networking.
  3. Add a document through its document-chat workflow and ask a question whose answer is plainly visible in the file.
  4. Open the local server controls if another application needs an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Test it locally while networking remains disabled.

AnythingLLM setup

  1. Install AnythingLLM and select a local provider rather than an optional hosted provider.
  2. Confirm the language model, embedder, and vector database settings before importing files.
  3. Create one workspace for a single project, add a small set of representative documents, and wait for indexing to complete.
  4. Ask questions with distinctive phrases from the files, then inspect the retrieved passages and adjust the workspace when unrelated documents are being returned.
  5. Repeat the offline test with networking disabled and verify that the workspace still opens and answers.

Ollama setup

  1. Install Ollama and use its documented command to download and run a model.
  2. Send a short prompt locally and confirm the model responds before connecting an editor or agent.
  3. Configure the client to use Ollama’s local API endpoint and select the downloaded model explicitly.
  4. For document analysis, add a RAG layer that handles parsing, embeddings, indexing, retrieval, and source display. Ollama supplies the runtime; the client supplies the rest.
  5. Limit coding-agent permissions while you learn the workflow. Start with read-only project access and require confirmation before commands that modify files or run system operations.

GPT4All setup

  1. Install GPT4All and download a model that fits the available disk and memory.
  2. Chat with the model locally, then enable its document feature and download or select the required embedding resources.
  3. Import a small document set into LocalDocs and ask a question with an unambiguous answer in the text.
  4. If another application needs the service, enable the documented server mode and point the client at its OpenAI-compatible local endpoint.
  5. Disable networking and repeat both chat and document tests.

Using a local assistant for writing

Local models are useful for outlines, rewrites, tone changes, extraction, and first drafts. Give the model a clear role, the desired audience, the source text, and constraints such as word count or reading level. For factual writing, ask it to separate quotations or extracted facts from suggestions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A dependable writing loop

  1. Write the brief yourself, including audience, purpose, format, and facts that must not change.
  2. Ask for an outline rather than a complete article on the first pass.
  3. Generate one section at a time with the relevant source passages in context.
  4. Run a separate editing pass for clarity, redundancy, and unsupported claims.
  5. Compare names, numbers, dates, and quotations with the original documents before publication.

Offline operation improves control over sensitive drafts, but it does not make generated text authoritative. The model can be out of date, misunderstand a passage, or confidently produce a plausible error.

Using a local assistant for coding

Ollama is the most natural starting point when code is the primary task because its runtime and API are designed to be called by other tools. LM Studio is also suitable when you want a desktop model manager plus a local OpenAI-compatible server. GPT4All can expose a compatible server, while AnythingLLM is more useful when coding questions must be grounded in a project document set.

Safe integration pattern

  1. Run the model locally and verify the endpoint with a simple request.
  2. Connect an editor or coding client that supports a custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint, entering the local address rather than a hosted service address.
  3. Give the client only the project folders it needs. Keep secrets, production credentials, and unrelated home-directory files outside its context.
  4. Start with explanation, search, and patch suggestions. Review every diff before applying it.
  5. Run tests and linters locally, and do not let an agent execute destructive commands without confirmation.

A local API protects prompts from leaving the computer, but it does not make generated code safe. Treat model output as untrusted until it passes review, tests, dependency checks, and your normal security process.

Privacy checklist for private documents

  • Confirm that the selected provider is local and that no cloud provider has been enabled.
  • Check where original files, extracted text, embeddings, vector indexes, and logs are written.
  • Use full-disk encryption and operating-system access controls for confidential material.
  • Disable automatic update or catalog checks if your threat model requires a fully disconnected machine.
  • Use a firewall rule or an isolated network to validate that the workflow still functions without connectivity.
  • Delete temporary imports and indexes when a project is closed, and verify that backups do not retain them unexpectedly.

Troubleshooting common failures

The model will not load

Check free disk space first, then available RAM or VRAM. Close other applications, select a smaller or more heavily quantized model, reduce the context length, or switch from GPU acceleration to CPU mode if the selected GPU path is unsupported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Responses are extremely slow

CPU inference, insufficient memory, and a model that is too large for available VRAM are common causes. Try a smaller model, reduce context, stop other memory-heavy applications, and confirm that the intended acceleration backend is active.

Document answers are vague or wrong

Verify that text was extracted correctly, especially from scanned PDFs and complex tables. Test retrieval with a distinctive sentence, reduce the workspace to relevant files, check the embedder, and ask the assistant to show the retrieved passage or page reference.

The app works online but not offline

The model or embedding files may not have finished downloading, or an optional provider may still be selected. Reconnect, complete every required download, switch to the local provider, then repeat the test with networking disabled.

The API client cannot connect

Confirm that the local server or runtime is running, copy the exact local endpoint and model identifier, and check whether the client expects an OpenAI-compatible path. A local firewall rule, occupied port, or a client configured for a hosted API can also cause failure.

A practical decision framework

  • Pick LM Studio if you want one desktop application for writing, occasional document questions, and a local API.
  • Pick AnythingLLM if workspaces, document separation, and retrieval controls matter more than the simplest setup.
  • Pick Ollama if an editor, script, or coding agent is the main consumer of the model.
  • Pick GPT4All if you want uncomplicated local chat and a small LocalDocs collection.

If you are undecided, install one application, download one appropriately sized model, and complete the offline test with a short document. Evaluate the workflow you actually need—drafting, code assistance, or retrieval—not an abstract model-size contest. You can later use a runtime such as Ollama behind a different client, or connect a document front end to a local provider, because the user interface and model runtime do not have to be the same product.
