There is no verified under-$300 chair in the available product evidence that can be named a clear best choice for back support. The more useful approach is to prioritize fit: adjustable lumbar support helps only when the chair’s height and seat depth also suit your body. Treat chair features as workstation-fit considerations, not as a promise to relieve or cure back pain.
What to look for in an office chair
OSHA says a well-designed, properly adjusted chair is an important part of a safe and productive computer workstation. Its recommendations are useful fit checks, not rigid specifications that guarantee comfort or a medical outcome.
- Lumbar support: Look for support that can be positioned to contact your lower back comfortably. A fixed lumbar bump may land in the wrong place; try the chair if possible.
- Seat depth: The seat should support most of your thigh without pressing against the back of your knee. OSHA recommends depth adjustment, or a seat pan that can be adjusted, to accommodate different users.
- Seat height: Choose a range that lets you sit with your feet supported. If the right chair height leaves your feet dangling, a footrest may help.
- Backrest and recline: OSHA recommends a backrest that follows the spine’s natural curve, with recline of at least 15 degrees from vertical and forward/backward adjustment or an adjustable seat pan. Consider these as fit guidance rather than a universal pass/fail rule.
- Armrests and body-size fit: Adjustable arms can help you keep your shoulders relaxed, but only if they fit your desk and body. Check the chair’s dimensions and adjustment range against your own sitting posture.
- Price, warranty, and returns: Compare the full current cost, including delivery, and read the return terms and warranty. Comfort varies with body size and sitting style, so a practical return option matters.

It says the Staples Hyken and Office Star ProGrid lack seat-depth adjustment, and notes a minimum-seat-height concern with the Staples Kroy. Its discussion also raises fit or adjustability concerns about the AmazonBasics Mid-Back Mesh Chair, HON Convergence, and IKEA Markus. These observations are not a substitute for checking current product specifications or trying a chair yourself.

Wirecutter lists the Branch Softside at $299 on its page, but reports that it lacks adjustable lumbar support and seat-depth adjustment. That listing price may change, and the missing adjustments make it a poor default choice when those features are priorities. Wirecutter describes useful seat-depth, tilt, height, arm, and optional adjustable-lumbar features on the HON Ignition 2.0, but its listed buying prices are above this article’s budget; it is not a verified under-$300 pick.
How to assess a chair before buying
- Check dimensions and adjustments. On the product listing, find the seat-height range, seat depth or seat-depth adjustment, lumbar-support adjustment, recline behavior, and armrest options. Compare these with your body and desk setup rather than relying on the word “ergonomic.”
- Confirm the actual cost and terms. Check the price for the exact configuration you want, delivery charges, return window and costs, and warranty. Do this at checkout or with the seller because listings can change.
- Try the chair when possible. Sit back and check whether the lumbar support contacts your lower back comfortably, the seat supports your thighs without pressing behind your knees, and your feet can be supported. OSHA specifically advises trying different chairs before purchasing when possible.
- Use the return period as a fit test. If an in-person tryout is not possible, understand how returns work before ordering. Test the chair at your normal desk and for your ordinary sitting tasks, not just for a brief impression.
Set up the chair with the rest of your workstation
Chair fit depends on the desk and equipment around it. Adjust chair height alongside monitor, keyboard, and desk placement. If the chair needs to be higher for a comfortable desk position but your feet no longer reach the floor, OSHA suggests using a footrest. A removable back-support cushion may temporarily add support to a chair that lacks lumbar support, but it does not fix a seat that is the wrong depth or height.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Neither OSHA’s workstation guidance nor Wirecutter’s chair coverage establishes that a particular chair cures back pain. If pain is persistent or concerning, seek appropriate professional care rather than relying on a furniture purchase.
