If you want a different camera, the OBSBOT Tail Air is a documented same-family candidate with NDI and VISCA; however, Linux-specific software control for it is not established, and wired NDI requires a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter. Choose based on the exact control and video workflow you need—not on the assumption that a Linux-compatible video feed also means full camera control.
Is the OBSBOT Tail 2 usable on Linux?
It may fit a Linux production setup, but the available support differs by task. OBSBOT’s Tail 2 support and download page lists OBSBOT Center for Windows 10 (64-bit) or later and macOS 11 or later; it does not list Linux as a supported desktop operating system. That means there is no confirmed, supported Linux OBSBOT Center client in the listed requirements.
OBSBOT separately offers an SDK application route that lists Ubuntu support and the Tail 2 among compatible products. This is not the same as a ready-made Linux control app: users must apply to receive the toolkit, and the public information does not establish its full package scope, supported Ubuntu versions, or feature parity with OBSBOT Center. Confirm those details with OBSBOT before building a workflow around it.
What Linux integration paths does the Tail 2 offer?
The Tail 2 has several potential video and control interfaces, but each needs to be checked against the Linux applications and functions you plan to use. NDI lists the camera as certified for HX3 and notes full-size HDMI, Ethernet, and 3G-SDI in its Product Finder. OBSBOT’s March 20, 2025 launch announcement lists NDI, RTMP, RTSP, 3G-SDI, Pelco-D, Pelco-P, and FreeD.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Video into a production system: NDI, RTMP, or RTSP may suit a network-video workflow; HDMI or 3G-SDI may suit a capture-card workflow. Check that your specific Linux software or ingest hardware supports the chosen transport and format.
- Camera control: A listed protocol is a possible integration route, not proof that every control—including setup, tracking, or framing—is exposed through your Linux application. Verify the protocol implementation and the functions you need.
- Developer control: The Ubuntu SDK application path may be relevant if you can build or adapt an application, but access and capabilities need confirmation before you depend on it.
In practical terms, a camera that sends video to a Linux workstation is not automatically configurable or fully controllable from Linux. Treat capture compatibility and camera control as separate requirements.
OBSBOT Tail Air: the best-supported alternative to compare
The OBSBOT Tail Air is a compact AI-powered 4K PTZ streaming camera and a relevant same-family option if you want a camera with NDI and VISCA. OBSBOT describes Tail Air as supporting VISCA and NDI for LAN control in its Tail Air FAQ. Those protocol claims make it worth comparing for a networked production setup, but they do not establish that OBSBOT provides Linux-specific control software for it.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
There is also a physical connectivity difference. OBSBOT’s NDI guide says Tail Air needs a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter for wired NDI. Tail 2 has built-in Ethernet, according to NDI’s Product Finder. If wired network video is central to your setup, include that adapter requirement in the comparison.
Choose Tail Air only if its camera and network features suit your production needs and you can validate the control route you intend to use. If your requirement is a supported Linux GUI, the available product information does not confirm that Tail Air meets it. If you can use documented network protocols or obtain a vendor SDK, establish the implementation details first.

Compare the options by workflow
| Option | Linux control route established here | Video and connectivity noted | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBSBOT Tail 2 | OBSBOT Center requirements list Windows and macOS, not Linux; an application-based SDK route lists Ubuntu and Tail 2 compatibility. | NDI HX3 certification; full-size HDMI, Ethernet, and 3G-SDI; OBSBOT also lists RTMP, RTSP, Pelco-D, Pelco-P, and FreeD. | SDK access requires an application, and its scope and Ubuntu-version support are not established by the public listing. |
| OBSBOT Tail Air | Linux-specific control software support is not established here; manufacturer information describes VISCA and NDI LAN control. | NDI and VISCA; wired NDI requires a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter. | Protocol support alone does not prove compatibility with your Linux control application or the functions it exposes. |
Linux compatibility checklist before you choose
- Write down the control functions you need. Separate basic video capture from camera setup, pan/tilt/zoom, tracking, and other controls. Do not assume one interface covers them all.
- Choose a video path. Decide whether your production software will receive NDI, RTMP, or RTSP, or whether you will use HDMI or SDI through appropriate capture hardware. Confirm support in your exact application and setup.
- Confirm the control implementation. For an SDK-based plan, ask OBSBOT about current access, package scope, supported Ubuntu versions, and the Tail 2 functions exposed. For network protocols, verify which commands and features your intended software supports.
- Check physical connections. Account for Ethernet, capture hardware, cabling, and any adapter required by the camera. Tail Air wired NDI specifically requires a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter.
- Validate your actual environment. Check your Linux distribution, software version, camera firmware, and network configuration together before committing to a production workflow.
