For a 1080p60 H.264 YouTube Live stream, start with OBS set to CBR at 17 Mbps, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS; for 1080p30, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps. Leave about 20% upload headroom, test with representative gameplay and audio, and check stream health before leaving a broadcast unattended. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that any particular PC or connection will run all night.
First, decide what “VOD” means for your setup
For this topic, a VOD may mean either the replay YouTube retains from a live broadcast or a separate recording saved by OBS. The settings below configure the outgoing live feed. A local recording is a separate output with its own quality and storage trade-offs; you do not need one merely to send a live stream to YouTube.
Choose a live output target
1080p60 for fast gameplay
Use 1920×1080 progressive output at 60 fps when your encoder, computer, and upload connection can sustain it. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendation is 17 Mbps for this format; its 6 Mbps minimum is not the recommended target.
1080p30 for less demanding motion or tighter capacity
Use 1920×1080 progressive output at 30 fps if 60 fps is not sustainable. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps H.264 at 1080p30, with a 5 Mbps minimum. The lower frame rate requires less bitrate than 60 fps, though fast movement will appear less smooth.

Alternative codecs
YouTube’s recommended figures for AV1 or H.265 are 12 Mbps at 1080p60 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30. Use these only when the encoder and the complete streaming workflow support the selected codec; otherwise choose H.264. YouTube’s encoder recommendations are listed in its live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Set OBS for YouTube Live
- In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set the output resolution to 1920×1080 for a 1080p stream and use a progressive output. Choose 60 or 30 FPS according to the target above. YouTube also recommends square pixels and progressive scan.
- Open Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced, and configure the streaming encoder. Select an encoder that your system and YouTube workflow support.
- For live video, set rate control to CBR and enter the appropriate bitrate: 17,000 Kbps for 1080p60 H.264 or 14,000 Kbps for 1080p30 H.264. Do not use recording CRF or CQP values as the live bitrate.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- In OBS stream settings, select YouTube as the service and use the server/connection option that supports RTMPS. Add the YouTube stream key from your YouTube Live control room; treat it like a password and do not share it.
- For audio, use AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced recommendations list stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. For an SDR workflow, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR as applicable.
Exact encoder names and available controls vary with your OBS version, operating system, GPU, and encoder. YouTube’s settings page is the authority for ingestion targets; choose only settings your actual encoder exposes and supports.

Make sure the upload connection has room to spare
The stream bitrate must fit within your available upload bandwidth, not merely your download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% extra capacity. For a 17 Mbps video stream, plan for at least 20.4 Mbps of sustained upload capacity for the stream alone; for 14 Mbps, plan for at least 16.8 Mbps. These calculations apply the recommended headroom to the video bitrate and do not account for other household traffic, audio overhead, or network variability, so additional margin is useful.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Run a private or unlisted test using the same game, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and audio sources you plan to use overnight.
- Include representative gameplay motion and sound rather than testing only a static menu. Watch OBS for rendering or encoding strain and use YouTube’s stream health indicators to identify ingestion problems.
- If you are saving a local archive, confirm the recording opens and plays, and verify that its file size continues to grow during the test. YouTube recommends checking archive-file integrity and growth.
- Only proceed unattended after the test behaves as expected. No preset guarantees uninterrupted operation; YouTube’s guidance does not specify a universally safe unattended duration or prescribe a particular alert or backup-power setup.
Keep live bitrate separate from local recording quality
OBS recording controls such as CQP and CRF apply to a local recording, not the live YouTube CBR feed. OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide, published November 30, 2023, gives recording baselines of NVENC CQP 16–23, keyframe interval 2, preset P5, High Quality tuning, and two B-frames; for x264 it gives CRF 16–23, keyframe interval 2, and the veryfast preset. OBS notes that lower CQP or CRF values create higher-quality, larger files. These are recording settings, not a universal live-encoder recommendation. Ensure the machine can handle simultaneous streaming and recording if you choose both.
Choose latency for an overnight broadcast
YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture and playback. Lower latency can increase playback buffering; it matters less when you are not interacting with viewers. For a non-interactive overnight gaming stream, prioritize stable delivery over low latency for its own sake. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Troubleshoot common overnight problems
- Stream health reports dropped frames or unstable delivery: check sustained upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, and reduce the target from 60 fps to 30 fps or lower the bitrate to a sustainable level. Retest after changing the output.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: verify the selected YouTube service, RTMPS-capable connection, and current stream key. If you have exposed the key, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Video looks blocky during combat or fast camera movement: check that the live bitrate matches the chosen frame rate and codec recommendation and that upload capacity is not fluctuating. A higher frame rate needs more bitrate than 30 fps at the same resolution.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: confirm the intended audio source is active in OBS, then recheck the audio encoder and stereo sample settings. Include game audio and any microphone or music source in the representative test.
- Local recording stops growing or will not play: check local free storage and confirm the recording path and file are writable. Do not assume that a working YouTube stream proves the separate local archive is healthy.
- Wi-Fi varies during testing: test near the planned setup and compare performance at the time of day you expect to stream. If it remains unreliable, a wired connection may be worth trying; no particular cable category or speed gain is guaranteed by YouTube’s guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the aim is to keep pre-recorded gaming videos live on YouTube overnight, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving OBS and a home PC running. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, once per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or current plan details. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
