For a continuous meditation music stream, keep OBS processing minimal: adjust the source level if it is genuinely too quiet, use a compressor only to tame real level swings, and put a limiter last to catch occasional peaks. Leave the noise gate off; it can cut quiet notes, fades, and reverb tails. Add noise suppression or an expander only when you can hear unwanted noise and confirm processing is not removing musical detail.
Which OBS audio filters suit continuous meditation music?
Start with the audio source, not a preset chain. A filter should solve an audible problem; unnecessary processing can alter the dynamics or texture that make a meditation track relaxing. OBS’s official filter guidance describes the functions and cautions below.
| Filter | Use for a continuous music bed | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Gain | Optional, only if the source is too quiet. Where practical, adjust the source level upstream first. | Gain raises a quiet source; it is not loudness normalization and does not prevent peaks from clipping. OBS gain filter guide. |
| Compressor | Optional, if the music has level swings that need gentle control. | Compression reduces levels above a threshold and changes dynamics. OBS generally places it near the beginning of a filter chain. Listen to the actual output rather than assuming a setting suits all music. OBS compressor guide. |
| Expander | Usually omit for clean music. Consider light reduction only if low-level noise is audible. | It makes quieter sounds quieter and may act more smoothly than a gate. Set the threshold too high and you can attenuate quiet instruments or ambience. OBS recommends placing it after compression and other effects, before a limiter. OBS expander guide. |
| Noise suppression | Omit unless there is mild background or white noise in the source or capture chain. | OBS says suppression can help with mild fan or environmental noise, but is generally ineffective against large amounts of noise and can distort wanted sound. Audition it carefully. OBS noise suppression guide. |
| Noise gate | Do not use on uninterrupted music. | A gate cuts sound below its close threshold. Quiet notes, fades, and reverb tails may fall below it. OBS describes the filter for reducing background noise when not speaking, not for preserving a continuous music bed. OBS noise gate guide. |
| Limiter | A sensible final peak ceiling, set conservatively after listening. | It prevents peaks above a threshold that can cause clipping or distortion. OBS lists -6 dB as its default threshold; that is a software default, not a universal target for meditation music. Put it last. OBS limiter guide. |
| VST 2.x plugin | Not required for a basic setup. | OBS supports VST 2.x plugins, but the basic use case does not establish a need for a third-party plugin. OBS filters guide. |
Build and tune a minimal filter chain
If the source needs processing, a practical order is source-level adjustment, optional compressor, optional expander for identified noise, then limiter. Noise suppression is conditional: enable it only for a mild noise problem and compare the result carefully. OBS documentation does not prescribe one mandatory position for suppression relative to every other filter.
- Listen to the unprocessed source. Check the same quiet and loud passages that will be streamed, including fades, sustained notes, and ambience.
- Correct the source level first. Adjust it upstream where practical. Add OBS gain only if the source is genuinely too quiet, then check that peaks do not clip.
- Add compression only for audible level swings. Do not treat a generic ratio, threshold, or loudness target as a meditation-music prescription; listen for changes to the music’s dynamics.
- Use noise processing only for actual noise. Add an expander or suppression when you can identify unwanted sound. Compare bypassed and processed playback to make sure quiet musical detail remains intact.
- Put the limiter last. Verify that it catches occasional peaks rather than working constantly. The OBS default threshold of -6 dB is not a guarantee of an ideal ceiling.
- Test the stream itself. Run a private or unlisted stream and listen to YouTube playback, not just the OBS meter. OBS recommends testing the setup before going live in its overview guide.
Keep OBS filters separate from YouTube encoder settings
Filters process the sound; encoder settings determine how OBS sends it to YouTube. For stereo live audio over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, 128 kbps, and a 44.1 kHz sample rate in its advanced settings. These are encoding recommendations, not filter settings. YouTube does not show a publication date on the cited Help page, so check its current guidance when configuring a stream.

Plan for monitoring, network capacity, and archives
- Monitor the real output. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, checking stream health, continuously monitoring quality, and ensuring local archive files are growing. Its streaming tips recommend leaving 20% network bandwidth headroom: YouTube streaming tips.
- Do not rely on one complete 24-hour YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends recording a local archive as backup. Plan continuity separately rather than promising one complete day-long VOD: YouTube archive guidance.
- A filter chain does not guarantee uptime. Audio processing cannot solve dropped connections or other stream failures. Test the full setup and keep a local recording if you need a backup.
