For ASMR, start with clean microphone placement and no filters; add only the processing that solves an audible problem. If steady room or computer noise remains, try light Noise Suppression. Use an Expander for a gentler reduction of low-level noise, a Compressor only when loudness varies too much, and a Limiter last as a peak ceiling. A Noise Gate can cut quiet breaths, whispers, and sound tails if its thresholds are too aggressive, so test every change with the softest sounds you intend to stream.
Choose filters for the problem you actually hear
OBS has no published ASMR-specific preset. Filter settings depend on the microphone, room, voice, and quiet sounds in your stream, so treat OBS defaults and guide values as starting points to audition—not targets.
| Filter | Use it for | ASMR caution | Placement or requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Noise Suppression | Mild steady background or white noise, such as computer or environmental noise. | Stronger suppression can distort wanted sounds and is generally ineffective in a loud room. | Audition conservatively before dynamics processing. RNNoise uses more CPU than Speex. NVIDIA Noise Removal requires the NVIDIA Broadcast SDK redistributable. OBS Noise Suppression documentation. |
| Expander | Reducing low-level unwanted sound without a hard gate. | A threshold set too high can reduce quiet wanted material. | OBS describes placing it near the end, after compression and other effects but before a Limiter. Its guide gives 5–10 ms attack and 50–120 ms release as starting ranges, not an ASMR preset. OBS Expander documentation. |
| Noise Gate | Cutting background noise while the microphone is inactive. | Opening and closing can remove quiet breathing, whispers, or tails if thresholds are too aggressive. | Set the close threshold above the noise and the open threshold slightly below the wanted voice level, then test quietly. OBS lists -32 dB close and -26 dB open as defaults, not universal targets. OBS Noise Gate documentation. |
| Compressor | Reducing peaks when the source loudness varies substantially. | Compression changes dynamics. Output gain can raise average level and make noise more audible. | OBS says it is typically near the beginning of the chain. Its defaults include a -18 dB threshold and 10:1 ratio; those are not ASMR recommendations. OBS Compressor documentation. |
| Limiter | Setting a final ceiling to reduce the chance of peaks exceeding a chosen level. | It cannot repair distortion already present in the source. | Place it last. OBS’s documented default threshold is -6 dB, not a required stream target. OBS Limiter documentation. |
| Gain | Adjusting a source that is too quiet or too loud. | Gain does not remove noise or fix a poor recording environment. | Adjust while monitoring levels. OBS audio filters. |
Build and audition a filter chain
- Improve the unprocessed signal first. Place the microphone to capture the intended performance while minimizing room and computer noise. Listen to the clean input before adding filters; processing cannot reliably fix a noisy room or distortion at the source.
- Add Noise Suppression only if steady noise is audible. Compare the available methods at a conservative setting with the actual whispering, breathing, taps, and pauses you plan to stream. Stop or reduce it if those sounds become metallic, watery, or dull. OBS says RNNoise is higher quality but more CPU-intensive than Speex; Speex is configurable. NVIDIA Noise Removal has the additional SDK redistributable requirement. Do not assume stronger reduction is better.
- Add a Compressor only if loudness variation calls for it. It can control substantial differences in level, but may change the soft dynamics that make ASMR effective. Monitor the result and avoid raising output gain without checking whether it also raises unwanted noise.
- Try an Expander if low-level noise remains. OBS suggests RMS detection and gives 5–10 ms attack and 50–120 ms release as guide starting ranges. These values are not validated ASMR settings. Lower the threshold or reduce the effect if quiet wanted sounds recede.
- Use a Noise Gate only when a hard cut is acceptable. Set its close threshold above the noise floor and its open threshold slightly below the wanted voice level. Test the quietest breath, whisper, and sound decay. OBS’s default -32 dB close and -26 dB open thresholds are examples, not recommended settings for every mic.
- Put the Limiter last. It can provide a final peak ceiling, but cannot undo clipping or distortion that happened before the signal reached it.
- Re-test the entire chain at realistic levels. Compare the filtered and unfiltered sound in headphones, including silence between actions. If a wanted detail disappears or artifacts appear, bypass or soften the responsible filter.
Expander or Noise Gate: which is safer for quiet ASMR?
An Expander has an adjustable ratio and, in OBS’s description, produces a smoother opening and closing than a fixed-ratio gate. A Noise Gate is intended to cut background noise while you are not talking. For material where breaths, whispers, and decays may be quiet, an Expander is a reasonable first audition when some low-level reduction is needed. A Gate can work if testing shows it leaves those sounds intact; it should not be added simply because the room is not silent.
Test the stream and monitor it in YouTube
- Make a representative test. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Include the quietest ASMR sections, not just a loud speaking check.
- Preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the feed is accessible and listen for level changes, missing quiet sounds, or processing artifacts.
- Monitor stream health and quality during broadcast. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality. This guidance does not certify that OBS filters or a particular setup will run uninterrupted for 24 hours or longer. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Choose encoder audio settings deliberately. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and your Live Control Room configuration, as platform guidance can change.
- If recording a local archive, verify it. Check that the file is intact and continues to grow while the stream is running.
Keep music rights separate from audio processing
Filters do not grant permission to use music. YouTube’s livestream terms require the necessary rights for streamed content, including music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may trigger a warning, placeholder image, interruption, or termination. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and YouTube’s copyright guidance.

YouTube says Creator Music tracks offered for licensing or revenue sharing cannot be used in live streams. Its safe-music advice points to the YouTube Audio Library, original music, or third-party music whose terms permit the intended use. A track described as “free” is not, by itself, proof that your use is authorized. See Creator Music usage restrictions and the YouTube Audio Library.
Troubleshoot common filter problems
- Whispers or breaths vanish: A Gate’s thresholds may be too aggressive, or the Expander may be reducing low levels too much. Lower the thresholds or soften/bypass the filter, then test the quietest sounds again.
- Audio sounds watery or metallic: Noise Suppression may be too strong or poorly suited to the noise. Reduce or disable it and address steady noise at the source where possible.
- Room noise becomes louder after compression: Compression or output gain may be raising average level along with wanted audio. Reduce output gain or compression and compare against the unprocessed input.
- Peaks still sound distorted: A Limiter cannot repair distortion already present in the source. Check the input level and source signal before the Limiter.
- The computer struggles after enabling suppression: RNNoise is more CPU-intensive than Speex according to OBS. Try Speex or disable unnecessary processing, then re-test the stream.
- A live stream is interrupted for music: Check rights for each track and YouTube’s notices. A filter cannot prevent a third-party-content match or establish a music license.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS filters address audio quality; they do not keep a home computer or internet connection available around the clock. For a pre-recorded ASMR video stream to YouTube, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud:
