For most players, Mario Kart 64 is the easy starting point for kart racing and multiplayer. Choose Diddy Kong Racing for an adventure with cars, hovercraft and planes, F-Zero X for futuristic speed, or Wave Race 64 for buoy-guided water racing. There is no single objective winner: the right N64 racer depends on what you want to drive and how you want to play.
Which N64 racing game should you choose?
| Game | Best fit | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart 64 | Kart racing and multiplayer | Nintendo highlights courses including Toad’s Turnpike and Choco Mountain. Its Nintendo UK page lists a regional release date of 24 June 1997. |
| Diddy Kong Racing | Solo progression and vehicle variety | Its 20 courses feature cars, hovercraft and planes; Nintendo also describes versus play for two to four players. |
| F-Zero X | High-speed futuristic racing | Nintendo emphasizes speed and a risk-reward mechanic: hitting track edges damages your vehicle. |
| Wave Race 64 | Watercraft handling and buoy routes | Water physics and navigating buoys distinguish it from road and kart racers. |

Mario Kart 64: the all-round kart pick
Pick Mario Kart 64 if you want familiar kart racing and a strong fit for playing with other people. Nintendo classifies it as a racing game and calls out courses such as Toad’s Turnpike and Choco Mountain. Its appeal here is straightforward: choose it when kart racing is the experience you want, rather than a broader adventure or a vehicle-handling challenge.

Diddy Kong Racing: the varied solo adventure
Diddy Kong Racing is the most varied vehicle choice in this group. Nintendo describes 20 courses raced in cars, hovercraft or planes, along with versus play for two to four players. That mix makes it the natural pick if you want more than conventional kart laps and value a solo progression option as well as multiplayer.
F-Zero X: the speed-first option
Choose F-Zero X when speed and futuristic tracks are the priority. The edge-impact damage mechanic gives the track itself a consequence: collisions with its boundaries damage the vehicle. That makes it a different proposition from choosing a racer mainly for vehicle variety or water handling.
#1 Best Overall
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only.
- It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
Wave Race 64: for water handling
Wave Race 64 is the specialist pick for racing on water. Its buoy routes and water physics are central to the experience, so it suits players looking for something distinct from road-based racing rather than another kart game.

For play on original hardware, these games are N64 cartridge releases. Check the individual seller listing rather than assuming that availability, condition, completeness or compatibility is the same across listings. Verify the cartridge’s region and confirm it is suitable for your console; compatibility can vary, and a blanket guarantee is not established here.

- Hot Wheels Turbo Racing
- Inspect the specific listing for the cartridge’s condition and whether any box or manual is included.
- Check the region shown on the listing and confirm it against your console before buying.
- Compare the actual seller listing and terms; current prices, stock and seller quality vary and are not established here.
Does Mario Kart 64 require a Controller Pak?
No Controller Pak is needed for ordinary play. The official Mario Kart 64 manual connects the N64 Controller Pak to saving Time Trial ghost data and says ordinary play does not require saving that data. Consider a Pak only if you want that ghost-saving feature.
