If you like League of Legends for its team coordination and tactical decisions but want a persistent world, deeper lore, and boss encounters, start with Final Fantasy XIV for story-led party progression or Guild Wars 2 for mobile combat and build flexibility. The Elder Scrolls Online favors open-world exploration and varied group sizes, Lost Ark puts action combat and multi-phase raids front and center, and World of Warcraft offers several ways to progress before joining an organized raid. None recreates League’s 5v5 match loop: MMO combat asks you to develop a character and coordinate through longer-running content.
What League fans should look for in an MMO
League’s 5v5 matches reward coordination, positioning, and decisions about when to split or siege. Riot’s 2026 gameplay preview discusses those strategic options as part of the game’s appeal (Riot Games’ 2026 gameplay preview). In an MMO, those instincts transfer to party roles, encounter mechanics, character builds, and longer boss fights—not to lanes and objectives on a short match timer.
Choose by the kind of group experience you want: a story campaign that leads into structured duties, movement-focused fights, exploration with several group scales, action-oriented raids, or a gentler route into larger content. The recommendations below are feature-based fits, not an objective ranking.

- Combat feel: Do you want role-based party play, action combat, or fights that emphasize active movement and positioning?
- Group structure: Would you rather play in a small party, tackle a larger raid, join open-world events, or find groups through matchmaking and guilds?
- Solo-to-group path: Can you explore and learn at your own pace before relying on a regular team?
Best current MMO fits for League of Legends fans
Final Fantasy XIV: story progression with structured party duties
Choose Final Fantasy XIV if you want a long-running story alongside organized group encounters. You can progress through quests as well as duties such as dungeons, trials, and guildhests. Its official manual says a party can contain up to eight players, with role requirements varying by duty (Square Enix’s FFXIV manual).

- UNLOCK A UNIVERSE OF EXPERIENCES and compete with a global community of millions across multiple battlefields with Riot Games
- Unlocks in-game currency that can be used to purchase in-game items
- Redeemable in League of Legends, Valorant, Wild Rift, Teamfight Tactics, Legends of Runeterra, and 2XKO
- PC, mobile, console… it all works. Just enter your code at shop.riotgames.com/redeem and choose the game you want to use this virtual currency for
- This code is only redeemable on Riot Accounts in North America and Canada
This is a natural fit if you enjoy coordinating around defined party jobs and want the world’s story to remain central. The tradeoff is that its combat is built around MMO roles and duties, not League’s lane-and-objective format.
Guild Wars 2: movement, encounter coordination, and build choices
Guild Wars 2 suits players who enjoy repositioning, dodging, and adapting their character for a fight. ArenaNet describes five-player story dungeons, five-player Fractals that become more difficult, and ten-player raids. Its raid overview highlights positioning, dodging, coordination, and knowledge of professions and builds (ArenaNet’s Guild Wars 2 group-content overview).
That combination makes it a strong pick if you like changing how you approach an encounter rather than only following a fixed role routine. Its range of instance sizes also lets you choose between smaller groups and larger raids.

The Elder Scrolls Online: exploration and several group scales
Pick The Elder Scrolls Online if discovering a large fantasy world is as important as fighting bosses. ZeniMax Online Studios’ new-player guide describes a main story, four-player dungeons, twelve-player trials, challenging world events, guilds, and a group finder (ESO’s official new-player guide).
The variety lets you move between solo exploration, smaller dungeons, and larger group activities. It is a good fit if you want to choose your level of commitment rather than center your play around one kind of raid.
Lost Ark: action combat and multi-phase boss raids
Lost Ark is the strongest fit here if you want an action-oriented feel and boss encounters as a major draw. Its official overview describes it as an action MMORPG with a gods-and-demons story, guilds, and multi-phase raids against powerful bosses (Lost Ark’s official overview).

- IMMERSIVE CAMPAIGN: Embark on an expansive campaign as heroes of the realm, battling evil forces across 14 main quests for 50-65 hours of thrilling gameplay.
- DIVERSE HEROES: Choose from six distinct heroes, each with unique playstyles and abilities, allowing for dynamic character progression and strategic gameplay.

- HIGH REPLAYABILITY: Experience interactive storytelling that influences the world around you, ensuring each playthrough offers new surprises and challenges.
Its isometric action-RPG presentation is a substantial change from League’s team-lane view. Consider it for active combat and raid mechanics, not because its moment-to-moment play reproduces a MOBA match.

World of Warcraft is worth considering if you want broad group content but are not ready to commit to organized raiding. Blizzard’s The War Within-era material describes Delves as replayable solo or small-group adventures, and Story Mode as a way to follow a raid narrative with NPC companions (Blizzard’s The War Within feature overview).
Those examples offer routes into MMO progression that do not begin with a scheduled raid team. They are expansion-specific features; check the current expansion, available content, and access terms before choosing the game on that basis.

Announced games to watch, not current recommendations
AION2: check regional release status
NCSoft’s June 4, 2025 announcement described AION2 as featuring manual combat, a faction-conflict story arc, more than 200 dungeons, and group instances for four or eight players (NCSoft’s AION2 announcement). That announcement makes it one to watch for players drawn to combat and instanced group content, but it does not establish that the game is currently released or available in your region. Confirm release and regional status before treating it as a playable choice.
Guild Wars 3: a future watchlist entry
The official Guild Wars 3 site describes it as an action-adventure MMORPG and says players can expect betas in Fall 2027 (Guild Wars 3 official site). That is a future-looking announcement, not evidence of a playable current MMO.
