If you want a retro gaming device small enough to carry easily, the best choice depends on whether you want a tiny novelty or a handheld with room to play more. Atari’s Super Micro Keychain Gamer is the clearest pick for pocket-sized, preloaded classics; Game Bird adds TV output, while the Super Pocket is a larger option with cartridge support.
This shortlist includes seven distinct devices or versions supported by available product information. The two Atari game sets count separately because they contain different games, but share the same hardware. These are manufacturer or retailer descriptions, not hands-on test results.

Keychain-sized picks for quick play
Atari Super Micro: Asteroids, Gravitar & Yars’ Revenge
This version packages three named Atari games into a small dedicated handheld. Its 2-inch TFT screen, volume control and three-AAA-battery power setup make the trade-off straightforward: it is easy to carry, but it is a fixed selection rather than an expandable library. Atari listed the price as $24.99 on its product page when checked; availability and price can change.

Legami Pocket Arcade
Legami’s device is a simple, inexpensive-style novelty rather than a general-purpose retro handheld: it has ten 8-bit games on a 1.25-inch LCD. A keychain, adjustable volume and two included AG13 batteries are listed. The Legami UK page showed £7.99 when checked, a region-specific displayed price rather than a universal current price.
Oliver Bonas Pocket Keyring Arcade Game
Oliver Bonas describes this keyring arcade as containing 26 games and lists its dimensions as 8 × 4.5 × 1.4 cm. The retailer’s page does not establish screen size, battery arrangement or whether the games are expandable, so its strongest verified appeal is its small physical size and larger advertised game count than the Legami unit.

Mini devices with a more distinctive feature
Game Bird: keychain portability plus TV output
Game Bird stands out by pairing a 1.3-inch screen and rechargeable battery with HDMI output and an included four-port USB hub. That lets the device connect to a TV, but it is not a complete multiplayer setup: controllers are sold separately. Its maker says commercial ROMs are not included and advises users to use only game backups they legally own. Do not assume a retro label means that any particular game library is included or compatible.

FunKey S: a foldable design
The FunKey S folds closed into a keychain-sized form. Its project page says closing the console automatically saves the game before powering off, and reopening it resumes play. The retrieved project information does not establish current stock, so confirm availability directly rather than treating the product page as proof that it can currently be purchased.

For more play: the Super Pocket
The Hyper Mega Tech! Super Pocket is compact, but it is not as tiny as the keychain devices. A 2026 Creative Bloq buying guide reports 18 preinstalled games, cartridge support, USB-C charging and a headphone jack. That makes it the stronger fit if you want a more flexible handheld rather than a novelty with a fixed handful of games. Those details come from a secondary guide, not a manufacturer specification in the material available here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a mini retro gaming device
- For a tiny gift or occasional play: choose a fixed-game keychain device, and check which titles are actually included.
- For TV play: Game Bird lists HDMI output, but budget for separately purchased controllers if you want to play with others.
- For a fold-away design: FunKey S offers the distinctive close-to-save behavior described by its project page; check current availability first.
- For a broader library: a compact cartridge-supporting device such as the Super Pocket is a more suitable category than a fixed-game keychain.
- Check the power details before buying: the Atari models require three AAA batteries that are not included, while Legami lists two included AG13 batteries and Game Bird lists a rechargeable battery.
Game counts are not directly comparable: some figures describe fixed preloaded games, while the Super Pocket guide also reports cartridge support. None of the cited product descriptions establishes broad compatibility across retro systems, so check the specific games and formats you care about.
