What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single Minecraft server setting that guarantees low latency. First distinguish network ping—the time data takes between a player and the server—from server lag caused by missed game ticks. On a Paper Java server, adjusting view and simulation distance can reduce server workload, while compression trades CPU use against bandwidth. None of these settings fixes a poor network route.
First identify which kind of lag players are experiencing
Network round-trip time and delayed server ticks are different problems, and they can occur together. A server can keep up with its game updates while a player still has high ping because of that player’s connection or the route to the host. Conversely, players may see delayed actions even when their network path is fine if the server is overloaded.
Paper describes 20 ticks per second as the target rate. Each tick needs to complete within 50 milliseconds to maintain it. Profiling and tick timing help investigate server workload; they do not measure the quality of a player’s route to the host. Paper’s command reference
Which settings should you adjust on a Paper Java server?
Change one setting at a time and observe the result during representative gameplay. The properties below are documented for Paper Java; check the live reference for the version actually running on your server, since documentation and defaults can change. Paper server properties

| Setting | What it controls | Documented value or range | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
view-distance |
How much world data, measured in chunks in each direction, the server sends to each client. | Default 10; allowed range 3–32 in the cited Paper reference. | Lowering it can reduce chunk sending and server work, but players receive less world data at a distance. |
simulation-distance |
The radius in which entities may be located to receive server updates. | Default 10 in the cited Paper reference. | Lowering it reduces the area being simulated, but can affect mobs, farms, and other gameplay farther from players. |
network-compression-threshold |
The packet-size threshold at which packets are compressed. | Default 256; a negative value disables compression in the cited Paper reference. | Compression uses CPU while reducing transmitted data; disabling it can increase bandwidth use. Neither choice is a documented ping fix. |
Tune view and simulation distance for the actual world
These settings do different jobs: view distance controls how far the server supplies world data, while simulation distance controls where entity updates happen. Lowering either may reduce work, but the gameplay cost differs. Consider player count, activity, plugins or mods, world behavior, and desired experience; the documented defaults are not a benchmarked best setting for every server.
Treat compression as a CPU-versus-bandwidth choice
With the documented threshold of 256, packets at or above that size are compressed. A lower threshold makes more packets eligible for compression and can increase CPU work. Raising the threshold or using a negative value to disable compression can increase transmitted data. The better trade-off depends on available CPU headroom and bandwidth; Paper’s reference does not promise that disabling compression will lower player ping.

Profile the server while the lag is happening
Paper identifies spark as its preferred profiler and says it is bundled starting with Paper 1.21. Its profiling documentation describes Timings as unmaintained and deprecated. Start a profile while players are seeing the problem, or during a representative busy period if it occurs intermittently; a quiet-server capture may not show the source of a live slowdown. Paper profiling documentation
- When the server is experiencing the issue, run
/spark profiler start --timeout 600in the server console or in-game with the required permissions. Paper gives this as an example of a 10-minute profile. - Review the resulting profile for costly server-side work, such as entity activity or plugins. A profile can help locate server processing overhead, but it does not establish whether a player’s network route is slow.
- Compare observations from realistic gameplay, including the player count and activity that reproduce the symptom, before deciding whether a configuration change helped.
Choose hosting by testing the workload and route, not by a universal preset
A 2021 Meterstick study examined Minecraft-like games using Minecraft, Forge, and PaperMC across cloud and self-hosted environments. In its tested deployments, performance varied with workloads and environment. The authors report peak response time reaching 20.7 times the arithmetic mean and more than 7.4 times their stated playability threshold. Those results describe the study’s experiments, not a current guarantee or benchmark for every commercial host. Meterstick report

When comparing hosting options, try to keep the game version, server software, world, plugins, player count, and activity as similar as possible. Check whether the location performs well for your actual player group, what compute allocation and consistency are available, whether you can profile the server, and whether configuration is adjustable. No provider or region can be named as universally best from the evidence here.
If tick performance is healthy but a particular player still has high round-trip time, investigate that player’s connection and the route to the server separately. Changing distances or compression settings cannot shorten the physical or network path.

Keep Java and Bedrock settings separate
The distance settings and values above are from Paper’s Java server documentation and should not be copied to Bedrock Dedicated Server. Microsoft documents a Bedrock view-distance default of 32 chunks and tick-distance default of 4; its guide explains that simulation distance can affect both client and server performance and that client and server limits interact. These are Bedrock-specific values, not Paper Java defaults. Bedrock Dedicated Server properties · Microsoft’s Bedrock distance guide
