If you want another horror film that unsettles your sense of reality after Oculus, start with The Others for atmospheric supernatural dread or Lake Mungo for a slower, psychologically tense experience. For more emotionally severe, family-centered horror, try Goodnight Mommy or The Lodge.
What makes a movie feel like Oculus?
Oculus centers on a cursed mirror and moves between a family’s past and present, making perception itself part of the horror. TIME describes that mirror-and-timeline structure in its Blumhouse horror overview. In a 2024 interview, director and co-writer Mike Flanagan discussed The Shining as an influence on how he filmed the mirror, and the way prolonged attention to a reflection can make the mind alter what it sees (RogerEbert.com interview).

The closest follow-up depends on which part worked for you: a supernatural force, uncertainty about what is real, family or grief-centered pressure, or a slow atmosphere rather than frequent overt scares. The films below are starting points, not an objective ranking: The Others and Lake Mungo were directly suggested in an Oculus-specific audience discussion; Goodnight Mommy and The Lodge are broader psychological-horror matches discussed by TIME.

Which movie should you watch next?
The Others: atmospheric supernatural unease
Choose The Others if you want eerie supernatural tension and a film that relies on atmosphere. It was named directly in a discussion seeking movies like Oculus, making it a natural first stop when the haunting quality matters more to you than reproducing the mirror premise.

Lake Mungo: slow-burn psychological tension
Try Lake Mungo if you want the unease to build gradually and prefer a psychologically tense mood. It was another direct suggestion in the same Oculus-specific discussion. It is a better fit for a slow-burn request than for someone chiefly seeking overt scares.
Goodnight Mommy: family relationships under pressure
Pick Goodnight Mommy when you want uncertainty rooted in a family relationship rather than a haunted object. TIME includes it among its horror recommendations and discusses it alongside The Lodge. It suits viewers drawn to the strained-family side of Oculus.
Rank #2
The Lodge: emotionally severe isolation
Choose The Lodge for a more isolating and emotionally severe psychological-horror experience. TIME discusses it alongside Goodnight Mommy; it is a broader match for the psychological dread of Oculus, not a direct mirror-story counterpart.

How much does Oculus leave open to interpretation?
Flanagan said he hoped the film’s structure would be clear, but that any confusion would be “the good kind of confusing.” He made that comment in a 2014 NOW Magazine interview. That aim fits the film’s shifts between past and present: uncertainty is part of the experience, rather than a puzzle that every viewer must resolve in exactly the same way.
