There is no single best membership platform for every creator. Patreon is a broad option for recurring access to mixed-format content and community; Memberful is built for selling memberships through your own website or app; and newsletter, video, course, and community platforms serve different business models. Choose based on what members receive, the full cost at your scale, and how much control you need over your audience and brand.

How to choose a membership platform

Start with the paid deliverable, not a popularity ranking. A platform optimized for paid newsletters may be a poor fit for a video library, while a community platform may add unnecessary complexity if all you sell is access to writing.

  • What members pay for: writing and email, mixed-format exclusive content, video, courses or downloads, or community access.
  • Total cost: account or plan charges, platform revenue share, payment processing, currency conversion, payout charges, transaction fees, per-member costs, and add-ons. “Free to start” does not mean cost-free.
  • Audience and data control: whether you can export contact and member information, use your own domain and payment account, and move billing and access if you leave.
  • Member experience and workload: checkout, content delivery, mobile viewing, discussions, events, integrations, and the work involved in publishing and managing access.
  • Flexibility and dependence: supported subscription types and tiers, plan limits, how terms may change, and what happens if you later migrate.

Published platform comparisons are opinions, not independent product tests. Treat rankings as starting points, then confirm features and current terms directly with each provider.

Membership platforms by creator model

Patreon: recurring access to mixed-format creator content

Patreon is a broad fit if you want to offer recurring memberships with tiers and a mix of content and community features. Its official pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, describes monthly and annual subscriptions, one-time payments, audio and image content, native video and livestreaming, newsletters, chats, direct messages, comments, exportable email lists, analytics, free trials and discounts, and podcast importing, syncing and RSS distribution. Patreon says it is free to start, but its standard platform fee is not the only potential charge.

Patreon’s Help Center article, updated September 11, 2026, says creators who published their page after August 4, 2025, are on the standard 10% platform-fee plan. Payment processing, currency conversion, payout fees and applicable taxes are additional. A creator whose page was published on or before August 4, 2025, may retain legacy pricing only while the page remains continuously published; unpublishing and later republishing moves it to standard pricing. The listed legacy platform rates are 5% for Founders, 8% for Pro and 11% for Pro + Merch, and are not available to new creators. Calculate your likely total rather than comparing platform percentages alone.

Memberful: memberships on your own website or app

Memberful describes its product as: “Sell subscriptions, share content, and connect with your audience, all on your own website or app.” The product page says creators connect their own Stripe account and can deliver newsletters, podcasts, digital downloads and community content. Payment options include monthly, annual, custom, one-time and group payments. Listed integrations include WordPress, Discord, Mailchimp and Kit.

This approach may suit creators who want their membership integrated into a site or app they control. The reviewed product-page evidence did not establish current pricing, so check Memberful’s official terms and calculate Stripe and any other applicable charges before comparing costs.

Newsletter-first publishing: beehiiv or Substack

A beehiiv-published comparison dated April 29, 2026, presents beehiiv as an integrated publishing, subscription and growth option, and Substack as a paid-writing option. Those are the publisher’s judgments, not independently verified rankings. If your main paid deliverable is a newsletter, compare the publishing workflow, audience-data access, revenue visibility, growth tools and complete fees against your own needs.

Video memberships: Uscreen

A Tella comparison published August 29, 2026, positions Uscreen for video membership and streaming. That makes it a category to investigate if your offer is a video library or streaming experience, rather than assuming a general membership service will deliver the member viewing experience you want. The comparison’s pricing figures are secondary-source snapshots; verify current official plan prices, limits, billing intervals, transaction fees and add-ons before making a decision.

Courses, digital products and community

The same Tella comparison describes Kajabi as a combined system for courses, coaching and marketing; Podia for digital products and community; Circle for community, discussions, events and courses; and SamCart for checkout-led selling. These are category-level descriptions from that publisher, not independent product evaluations. Compare the features you actually need and confirm them with each provider. A course platform, a community platform and a checkout tool are not interchangeable merely because each can participate in a paid offer.

Lightweight memberships and tipping: Ko-fi

The beehiiv-published comparison presents Ko-fi as an option for lightweight memberships and tipping. Consider it when a simple support or membership setup is closer to your offer than a full publishing, video or course system. Verify its current capabilities and costs against your intended member experience.

Compare the shortlist before you commit

Use this table to narrow your evaluation; it is not a claim that one platform wins every category. The category descriptions for beehiiv, Substack, Ko-fi, Uscreen, Kajabi, Podia, Circle and SamCart reflect publisher comparisons, not independent tests.

Platform or category Potential fit What to verify
Patreon Recurring memberships with mixed-format content and community Your applicable platform-fee plan and all additional charges; current feature availability for your account
Memberful Memberships delivered through your own website or app Current pricing, payment and other charges, integrations, and migration options
beehiiv or Substack Newsletter-led publishing and paid writing Fees, audience-data exports, publishing and payment workflow, and the features included in your intended plan
Uscreen Video membership or streaming Official current prices, plan limits, billing interval, transaction fees, add-ons, and member playback experience
Kajabi, Podia, Circle or SamCart Courses and coaching, digital products and community, community-led programs, or checkout-led selling, respectively Which features are included, the full cost of the setup, integrations, and whether the product matches your core paid deliverable
Ko-fi Lightweight memberships and tipping Current membership features, payment options, and total charges for your use case

Estimate the real cost and migration risk

Compare total cost at your expected scale

For each finalist, write down every recurring plan charge and every fee tied to revenue, payment, currency conversion, payouts, member count or optional add-ons. Apply those terms to a realistic estimate of your monthly sales and member mix. Patreon’s documented 10% standard platform fee, for eligible new pages, is one component of its cost rather than an all-in rate; its Help Center also identifies additional charges.

Do not use a secondary comparison’s example price as a current quote. The Tella comparison published August 29, 2026, includes price snapshots for some services, but providers can change prices, limits and billing terms. Confirm the provider’s own current offer before you budget.

Check what you can take with you

Before collecting payments, confirm whether you can export member contact information and what the export contains. Separately ask how membership status, payment details, recurring billing, and access to existing content would transfer if you moved. An exportable email list is useful, but it does not by itself establish that subscriptions or member access can be migrated.

Also decide whether you need to control your public-facing domain, use your own payment account, or connect the membership to an existing site and community. Memberful explicitly describes a website-or-app model and says creators connect their own Stripe account; check its current documentation for operational details relevant to your setup.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the offer. Write one sentence describing what a paying member receives and how often you publish or provide access.
  2. Choose the category. Shortlist mixed-content membership, newsletter, video, course or digital product, community, or lightweight tipping services according to that offer.
  3. Test the member journey. Review the actual signup, payment, access and cancellation experience, along with how members consume content on the devices they use.
  4. Model costs. Use your anticipated revenue and member count to account for plan charges, platform share, payment processing, currency and payout fees, transaction charges, and necessary add-ons.
  5. Confirm portability. Check data exports, domain and payment control, and what happens to recurring billing and access if you leave.
  6. Verify current terms. Confirm prices, features, plan eligibility and limits on official provider pages immediately before committing.

Where StreamNeo fits for video creators

StreamNeo is not a membership platform: it does not manage paid memberships or member-only access. If your video strategy also includes keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud-streaming option. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud keeps looping the uploaded video without requiring your computer or home connection to stay on. It streams to YouTube only, not from a camera.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps, with one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account; billing options include a day, a week, a month, six months or a year, and you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Contact support for five or more slots. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use more than one membership platform?

Yes. The key is to decide which service owns member billing and access for each offer, and to avoid creating confusing duplicate subscriptions for the same benefit.

Does an exportable email list mean I can move paid subscriptions automatically?

No. Email export and transfer of recurring billing or membership access are separate capabilities. Confirm each one with the provider before relying on it.
