Astra is the broadest starting point if a Medium-inspired blog may grow into a larger site, while GeneratePress is a strong fit for writers who want a restrained design foundation. Consider Blocksy for modern content-site controls and Mesmerize if assembling a homepage from ready-made sections matters most. None is a one-click copy of Medium: check each theme’s post layout and reading experience in its live demo before choosing.

What makes a WordPress theme feel like Medium?

A Medium-style site is defined less by a particular feature than by a reading-first presentation: a focused content column, clear title and byline hierarchy, generous whitespace, and navigation that does not compete with the article. Treat these as evaluation criteria, not as guaranteed features of any theme. Preview the theme’s actual post template as well as its homepage; a polished landing page alone does not show how long articles will read.

WordPress.org’s 2026 directory snapshot lists more than 15,000 free themes and offers filters for layout, block themes, editor styles, accessibility, featured images, and template editing. Those filters can help narrow the field, but they do not replace checking a theme’s update history or assessing the finished site. Browse WordPress.org themes.

Four themes to consider

Theme Best fit Evidence and qualifications
Astra A publication that may expand into landing pages, memberships, or commerce A September 2026 iTechGuides comparison ranks Astra first and describes builder, WooCommerce, and starter-template support, with a free plan. Treat the ranking and plan details as a dated comparison snapshot and confirm current terms with the vendor. iTechGuides comparison.
Blocksy A content site that wants modern controls without a highly specialized magazine theme The same September 2026 comparison ranks Blocksy second and describes it as suitable for content sites, businesses, agencies, and stores. It lists a free plan and paid plans from $69 per year; verify current pricing and plan limits before purchasing. iTechGuides comparison.
GeneratePress A writer who wants a restrained foundation where typography and content hierarchy lead The September 2026 comparison ranks it third, lists a free plan and paid plans from $59 per year, and notes block-editor and WooCommerce support. Pricing and plan details are from that comparison snapshot; check the vendor’s current offer. iTechGuides comparison.
Mesmerize A team that wants to assemble a distinctive homepage quickly from visual sections The WordPress.org listing describes a predesigned homepage, five header designs, more than 30 ready-to-use content sections, responsive behavior, and WooCommerce readiness. It reports version 1.6.187, last updated August 12, 2026, and 10,000-plus active installations at that time. Mesmerize on WordPress.org.

Choose a block or classic theme by workflow

The choice is about how the site is built and maintained, not simply how it looks. WordPress describes block themes as themes edited mainly in the Site Editor and built with HTML and configuration files. Classic themes primarily use PHP, JavaScript, and CSS. • Choose a block theme if the people maintaining the site are comfortable using the Site Editor to change templates and site-wide design.
  • Choose a classic theme if the team prefers a theme workflow centered on its established controls and a codebase built primarily with PHP, JavaScript, and CSS.

The shortlist does not establish that every named theme belongs to one category or uses an identical editing workflow. Check the current theme documentation and demo before committing, especially if writers and site administrators have different responsibilities.

Compare the trade-offs before installing

  • Customization versus simplicity: The September 2026 comparison presents Astra and Blocksy as broader site-building options, GeneratePress as a more restrained foundation, and Mesmerize as a visual, prebuilt-section approach. Pick the level of control the people maintaining the site will actually use.
  • Commerce and expansion: The cited sources explicitly describe Astra, GeneratePress, and Mesmerize as WooCommerce-compatible or supported. Confirm the precise integration and assess performance with your own plugins and content; compatibility alone does not establish how a particular site will perform.
  • Accessibility and maintenance: Use WordPress.org’s accessibility-ready and other relevant filters as screening tools, then inspect update history and test the live implementation. A similar-looking demo is not proof that your finished site is accessible or well maintained.
  • Reading flow: Preview a real post, including its title, byline, body width, navigation, and any elements that appear alongside the text. Choose the theme that keeps attention on the article without making the site difficult to navigate.

How to shortlist and test a theme

  1. Start with the publishing plan. If articles are the main product and the design should stay quiet, test GeneratePress first. If the site may add broader pages or commerce, compare Astra and Blocksy. If a section-based homepage is the priority, test Mesmerize.
  2. Inspect a post, not only a homepage. Open a long-form article in the demo and evaluate whether the column, title hierarchy, whitespace, and navigation support uninterrupted reading.
  3. Test the editing workflow. Confirm how the team will edit article templates and site-wide design, and whether that matches its comfort with the Site Editor or a classic-theme workflow.
  4. Verify current details. Check vendor documentation for current prices, plan limits, theme controls, and any WooCommerce integration you need. The comparison’s prices and rankings are snapshots, not permanent guarantees.
  5. Check upkeep and accessibility. Review the directory listing and update history, use relevant WordPress.org filters, and test the pages your readers will actually use.
