Start with Microsoft Playwright MCP if you want a local or self-managed browser server. It gives an AI agent structured accessibility snapshots and broad Playwright interactions. Choose Browserbase MCP when your team wants hosted cloud-browser execution through Browserbase and Stagehand. There is no neutral published benchmark proving one is faster, cheaper, more reliable, or more accurate, so validate the finalists with your own workloads.
Which MCP server should you choose?
| Server | Execution model | Best fit | Distinctive capability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Playwright MCP | Local or self-managed Playwright process | Developers who need control over browsers, profiles, network access and execution | Structured accessibility snapshots that let an agent target roles and text |
| Browserbase MCP | Hosted cloud browser using Browserbase and Stagehand | Teams that prefer managed, remote browser sessions | Cloud browser automation without operating the browser infrastructure yourself |
| ScreenshotNeo | Hosted screenshot API and MCP server | Workflows that need reliable page images or PDFs rather than general interactive automation | Consent and widget cleanup, verdict headers, and an MCP interface for AI agents |
Playwright MCP is the default recommendation for a general browser-tool project because it combines navigation, interaction and inspection in one official server. Browserbase MCP is the more natural starting point when browser processes should run in a provider-managed environment. ScreenshotNeo is a complementary option when the deliverable is a clean screenshot or PDF; it is not a replacement for a full interactive browser session.
What MCP contributes to browser automation
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) gives an AI client a standard way to discover and call tools exposed by a server. In a browser workflow, the client can ask the server to navigate, inspect a page, click controls, fill forms or capture a screenshot. The server performs those actions in a real browser and returns structured results to the model.
This separation matters operationally. The MCP client handles conversation, planning and tool selection; the browser server handles browser state, page execution and automation. You can replace the client without rewriting the browser implementation, provided both support the same MCP transport and tool definitions.

Microsoft Playwright MCP: the strongest general-purpose choice
How it represents a page
Playwright MCP uses structured accessibility snapshots. Instead of asking an agent to infer every target from pixels, it exposes roles, names and text that the agent can reference. This can make actions such as selecting a button, entering a field or following a link more explicit than screenshot-only control, while still allowing screenshots when visual evidence is useful.
Supported interactions
- Navigate, go back or forward, and reload pages.
- Click elements, type text, fill forms and select dropdown options.
- Take screenshots and work with multiple tabs.
- Handle dialogs and send keyboard or mouse actions.
- Run Playwright code for complex interactions when the normal tools are insufficient.
Install and start the server
The documented quick start runs the package through npx:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest
Most MCP clients require a server entry in their configuration. The exact file and UI differ by client, but the command is the same. Microsoft documents configurations for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex and other MCP clients. Add the command as an MCP server, restart the client, then ask it to navigate to a page and report the available controls.
Important Playwright MCP options
- Headed or headless: headed mode is the default; add
--headlessfor an invisible browser process. - Browser choice: select Chrome, Firefox, WebKit or Microsoft Edge to match the site you are testing.
- Profiles: use a persistent profile when cookies and local storage must survive between runs, or an isolated profile for clean, repeatable sessions.
- Storage state: load saved authentication state instead of signing in during every task.
- CDP connections: connect to an existing Chromium-based browser exposed through a Chrome DevTools Protocol endpoint.
- Browser extensions: attach to a browser setup that already has the required extension.
- Timeouts: configure the idle timeout so a long task is not terminated while the agent is still working.
- HTTP transport: run the server in standalone HTTP mode when the client and browser process are on different machines.
- Optional capabilities: the repository exposes flags for vision, PDF and DevTools, plus code-generation language choices. Enable only what your client and workflow need.
When Playwright MCP is a good fit
- You need local access to private applications, internal networks or a custom browser installation.
- You want deterministic control over browser and profile selection.
- You need both semantic interaction and occasional Playwright code.
- You are willing to own browser updates, process supervision, scaling and network configuration.
Browserbase MCP: hosted browser execution
Browserbase describes its MCP server as providing cloud browser automation capabilities using Browserbase and Stagehand. That makes it a candidate when your team wants remote, provider-managed browser sessions rather than a browser process on each developer machine.

Choose it when operations are the constraint
A hosted model can simplify the parts of browser automation that are difficult to standardize locally: where sessions run, how a team reaches them and how execution is shared across developers or services. You still need to define authentication handling, session lifetime, network permissions and concurrency expectations for your application; the available source material does not establish a universal limit or performance advantage.
Questions to answer before adopting it
- Where will authenticated sessions and their browser state live?
- How will your system reach private domains or region-restricted sites?
- What session and concurrency controls does your plan provide?
- How will you collect logs, screenshots and failure details for debugging?
- Can the MCP client you use connect to the server’s required transport?
Playwright MCP versus Browserbase MCP
| Decision axis | Playwright MCP | Browserbase MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Local or infrastructure you manage | Hosted cloud browser |
| Primary control | Browser, profile, storage state, CDP and extensions can be selected or attached | Provider-managed Browserbase and Stagehand execution |
| Interaction model | Accessibility snapshots plus Playwright browser actions | Cloud browser automation through the Browserbase/Stagehand service |
| Operational ownership | You maintain processes, browser versions, networking and scaling | You rely on the hosted service for browser infrastructure while managing your application integration |
| Best starting point | Local development, private networks and fine-grained browser control | Remote execution and teams that do not want to run browsers themselves |
| Neutral benchmark | Not published for cost, speed, reliability or task success; test your own workload | |
Do not select solely from the names. Run the same scripted tasks against both options and record completion rate, median and tail latency, authentication success, concurrent sessions, browser crashes and total cost. Include the sites and regions that matter to your product; a result on a public page may not predict behavior on a logged-in or protected application.
A practical evaluation plan
- Define representative tasks. Include navigation, a multi-field form, a dropdown, a dialog, a new tab, a screenshot and one recovery case.
- Fix the environment. Use the same target URLs, browser family, account state, network location and timeout policy.
- Repeat enough times. Record cold starts separately from warm sessions so startup overhead is visible.
- Measure outcomes. Track task success, useful output, latency percentiles, crashes, retries and operator time.
- Test failure paths. Disconnect the network, expire a session, trigger a slow page and present a blocking dialog.
- Price the complete system. Include hosted browser charges, compute, storage, proxy or network costs and engineering time.
Keep the test harness and prompts under version control. A browser-server change, client update or site redesign can alter results, so record versions and dates with every run.
Connecting an MCP client to a browser server
Local Playwright pattern
- Install a current Node.js release and confirm
npxis available. - Add
npx @playwright/mcp@latestas a server in your MCP client’s configuration. - Choose headed mode for initial debugging; switch to
--headlessin unattended jobs. - Select a browser and profile strategy. Use isolated state for repeatable tests and persistent or storage-state sessions for authenticated work.
- Restart the client and request a simple navigation. Confirm that the returned snapshot contains roles and names before attempting a form task.
- Set an explicit idle timeout and capture logs from both the client and server.
Remote or hosted pattern
- Create the Browserbase credentials and MCP configuration required by your account.
- Decide how sessions receive authentication and whether they need access to private networks.
- Start with one short task and inspect the returned browser events before adding concurrency.
- Set session cleanup rules so abandoned browsers do not remain active.
- Move the configuration into your deployment secret manager; do not place tokens in prompts or source control.
For screenshot-only jobs: ScreenshotNeo
If your agent needs a page image or PDF rather than a long-lived interactive session, ScreenshotNeo is the first screenshot service to try: it removes consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan listed here.
What the service provides
- PNG, JPEG or WebP screenshots and PDF output from one GET request.
- Cookie/consent handling and removal of more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled.
- No charge for bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads or cache hits. Response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.
- An MCP server with
take_screenshot,get_page_infoandcapture_pdftools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. - Controls for full-page captures with lazy images, CSS-selector elements, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage information and an OpenAPI specification.
Or skip the browser setup
Use the API when you only need a clean artifact:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response headers. Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed; the MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
Reliability and security checklist
- Use isolated profiles for untrusted sites and persistent profiles only when the saved state is required.
- Keep credentials in environment variables or a secret manager, never in MCP prompts.
- Restrict navigation targets and outbound network access for agents handling sensitive data.
- Set navigation, action and idle timeouts separately so a single slow resource cannot hang a job indefinitely.
- Capture the final URL, page title, server logs and a screenshot when a task fails.
- Pin a tested package version in production instead of silently changing behavior with an unreviewed latest release.
- Redact cookies, authorization headers and page content from logs.
Troubleshooting common failures
The client cannot start Playwright MCP
Verify Node.js and npx, run npx @playwright/mcp@latest directly, and inspect the client’s MCP configuration for a misspelled command or working-directory assumption. Restart the client after changing its server list.

The agent cannot find a button or field
Ask for a fresh accessibility snapshot after navigation or a dialog appears. Check the element’s role and accessible name, then use the returned reference rather than a stale one. For highly dynamic controls, wait for a selector or use Playwright code.
Authentication disappears between tasks
Use a persistent profile or load storage state. An isolated profile intentionally starts clean, and a headed browser closed between runs will not retain state unless you configure persistence.
A page hangs or times out
Confirm the target is reachable from the browser’s network, increase the navigation or idle timeout for genuinely slow pages, and test with resource blocking to identify a third-party request that never completes.
A hosted session cannot reach an internal site
Check the Browserbase network path and access policy. A cloud browser does not automatically share your laptop’s VPN or localhost; expose the required service through an approved, authenticated route.

The screenshot contains a consent banner or blank page
For Playwright, explicitly handle the consent UI and wait for content before capturing. For ScreenshotNeo, inspect the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers to distinguish a clean result from a bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load or cache hit.
Bottom line
Use Microsoft Playwright MCP for broad, controllable browser automation and structured page interaction. Use Browserbase MCP when hosted browser execution best matches your operating model. Measure both with your own authenticated, concurrent tasks because the available official material does not establish a universal winner. When the output is simply a clean screenshot or PDF, ScreenshotNeo can remove browser setup and charge only for successful clean captures.

Can Playwright MCP and Browserbase MCP be used from the same MCP client?
Yes, if the client supports multiple MCP server entries and each server’s transport and credentials are configured correctly. Give the tools distinct names or descriptions so the agent can select the intended browser.
Does Playwright MCP require screenshots for every action?
No. Its primary representation is a structured accessibility snapshot. Screenshots are an available action when visual confirmation or an image artifact is needed.
When should I use an MCP browser server instead of a screenshot API?
Use an MCP browser server for multi-step interaction, navigation, forms and session state. Use a screenshot API when you need a repeatable image or PDF and do not need the agent to operate the page.
