For a pre-recorded ASMR loop, start with a low-cost Linux VPS running headless FFmpeg—not a full desktop with OBS—if your file is already encoded and you do not need live scene changes. There is no defensible universal “best” VPS: choose by region, CPU allocation, storage, monthly outbound transfer, and how you will monitor and restart the stream. A small VPS can be a practical DIY option, but it is not maintenance-free.

Which option fits a 24/7 ASMR stream?

The right setup depends on whether you are simply sending a prepared file to YouTube or producing a changing live show. A VPS is rented server capacity; you install and maintain the streaming software yourself. A managed cloud playout service handles more of that operation for you.

Option Best fit Main trade-off Check before committing
StreamNeo A YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos or playlists to loop without maintaining a server Less direct control over the underlying infrastructure than running your own VPS Quality, storage, slot and billing needs; each slot includes 10 GB pooled storage across active slots
Linux VPS with FFmpeg A prepared audio/video loop with little need for live scene changes You configure, monitor and maintain the server and process CPU if transcoding, transfer allowance and overage, storage, restart behavior, egress cost and provider rules
VPS with OBS and a desktop Scenes, overlays, graphical controls or more involved live production More resource demand and remote desktop or GUI administration CPU and RAM at target resolution and frame rate, desktop support, transfer and recovery
Other managed prerecorded-streaming platform A creator who prefers cloud playout to server administration Subscription cost and less direct infrastructure control Current price, stream count and duration limits, quality, archive behavior, YouTube support and rights workflow

StreamNeo is first to consider if the goal is an always-on YouTube stream without server upkeep: uploaded video runs from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. See StreamNeo.

How to choose a low-cost VPS

Start with the workload, not the headline price

For a static FFmpeg loop, a provider-authored 2026 guide suggests 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM as a starting point; this is guidance, not an independently measured minimum or guarantee for your stream. If you need OBS, Vultr’s 2025 Ubuntu setup guide lists at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage and 3 TB bandwidth for its example. That is an OBS-specific guide, not a requirement for headless FFmpeg. Compare actual plans in your target region rather than treating either configuration as a universal prescription. Space-Node’s 2026 VPS guide; Vultr’s 2025 OBS guide.

CPU needs depend heavily on whether FFmpeg can pass through compatible pre-encoded streams or must decode and re-encode them. Transcoding adds work, and the required capacity depends on the source file and output settings. A provider’s shared-CPU plan may cost less, but it is not equivalent to dedicated CPU for a sustained workload: Hetzner describes shared resources as intended for variable or low-to-medium CPU use and dedicated vCPUs as designed for sustained high CPU use. Treat that as a reason to test, not as a guarantee that a particular plan will handle your stream. Hetzner Cloud; FFmpeg documentation.

Check storage and outbound transfer

Estimate network use from your actual combined audio-and-video bitrate and the hours you will stream, then allow headroom and compare the result with the provider’s included monthly transfer and overage terms. As one provider-authored illustration, Space-Node estimates about 1.3 TB per month for a continuous stream at 4 Mbps; your usage will vary with bitrate and the provider’s billing convention. Do not assume that a bandwidth allowance advertised on one plan or in one region applies to another. Space-Node’s DIY VPS guide.

Confirm that disk space covers the media, operating system, logs and any temporary files, and check how the provider handles network egress, reboots and service restrictions. The reviewed provider information does not establish a current, like-for-like cheapest plan across providers. Prices and plan terms change, so verify them on the provider’s current plan page before paying.

Decide whether you need OBS

For a single prepared loop, headless FFmpeg avoids running a graphical desktop and is generally the simpler DIY architecture. OBS makes sense when you need scenes, overlays, or graphical production controls. It also increases the resource and administration burden. Do not select OBS just because a tutorial uses it; match the software to the production you actually need.

Set up a VPS stream with FFmpeg

This is a deployment outline, not a copy-and-paste command: the exact FFmpeg input and output options depend on your file’s codecs, resolution, frame rate and the current YouTube encoder settings. Consult the FFmpeg manual for option behavior and YouTube’s current guidance for encoder settings.

  1. Prepare the channel. Enable live streaming and create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions say: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public script repository, or share it with people who should not control the stream. YouTube’s encoder help.
  2. Validate your media. Check that the audio and any visuals play correctly, have the intended duration, and are content you are entitled to use. Determine whether FFmpeg can pass through the existing encoded streams or must transcode. A file that requires transcoding changes the CPU load, so do not size the VPS on the assumption of pass-through unless you have verified that it applies.
  3. Deploy the server and stream process. Install FFmpeg on a supported Linux VPS, transfer the prepared media securely, and configure FFmpeg to send it to YouTube’s ingest URL using the stream key. Set up looping deliberately and verify output in YouTube’s preview before treating the broadcast as live. Use the current YouTube encoder settings rather than guessing bitrate, resolution, frame rate or keyframe interval; the sources cited here do not establish a single set of numerical encoding values for every ASMR file and stream.
  4. Test under the intended load. Run a controlled trial at the resolution, frame rate and audio settings you plan to use. Watch CPU and memory use on the VPS, FFmpeg logs, dropped frames and stream health in Live Control Room. If the process is transcoding and the CPU is saturated, reduce the workload, adjust the output settings, or move to a plan with more suitable CPU capacity.
  5. Make recovery part of the setup. Configure process supervision so FFmpeg can restart after a crash or server reboot, retain logs, and check that the YouTube stream is actually healthy. A looping command alone cannot guarantee continuity through a damaged input file, network failure, VPS reboot or YouTube ingest interruption. OBS guidance and a provider-authored FFmpeg guide describe reconnect or retry approaches, but you still need to verify recovery in your own deployment. Vultr’s OBS guide; Space-Node’s DIY VPS guide.
  6. Choose an archive strategy. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous stream longer than 12 hours, do not assume YouTube will create one automatically archived replay; plan how you will handle stream length and replays, and check YouTube’s current behavior before launch. YouTube’s encoder help.

Protect the content and channel

A VPS, FFmpeg or managed playout service does not grant rights to an ASMR recording, music bed, sample, field recording or visual. Confirm that your permission covers continuous public streaming and any relevant territories or uses. YouTube lists copyright strikes and matches to another copyrighted live broadcast among reasons live access may be restricted. The reviewed sources do not establish whether a particular recording is cleared or whether a channel’s content qualifies for monetization; repeated playback is not a guarantee of monetization. YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions.

What it costs to keep a VPS live

Compare the full recurring cost, not just the advertised monthly VPS fee: include outbound transfer or overage, storage, and any extra capacity needed for transcoding or OBS. Also consider the value of your time spent setting up monitoring and recovery. The cited VPS guides offer starting configurations and an illustrative transfer estimate, but do not provide independent benchmarks or a current cross-provider total-cost comparison. A low headline rate alone therefore cannot identify a reliable best-value plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a VPS for a 24/7 ASMR livestream if I only have audio?

Yes, if the YouTube broadcast includes compatible video as well as audio; prepare a visual or other video stream and verify the file and output before launch.

Does a VPS guarantee that my stream will never go offline?

No. A VPS and restart configuration can help with some failures, but neither guarantees uninterrupted delivery through every server, network or YouTube ingest problem.
