The lowest-cost DIY setup is usually an existing computer that can run OBS Studio, a properly licensed story video, and a YouTube encoder stream. Set the stream to a resolution and bitrate your computer and internet connection can sustain, preview it in YouTube Studio, and monitor it while live. No specific computer can be called a proven 24/7 machine without testing it: continuous operation also depends on power, network stability, cooling, and recovery after failures.

What you need for a low-cost setup
Start with equipment you already own before buying a dedicated machine. A basic encoder-based setup consists of:
- A computer able to run OBS Studio at your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- A prerecorded story video, including narration, images, and music you have permission to use.
- A verified YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity for the selected video bitrate.
- Someone or something able to detect and address power, network, encoder, or source-file failures.
OBS’s published requirements are a compatibility floor, not proof that a computer can stream successfully. Its project cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording; CPU demand varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Test your actual machine and stream settings before relying on it. A mini PC may be convenient as a dedicated host, but there is no tested model or price established here. Before buying, check that the exact model supports your operating system, OBS, the intended output settings, and sustained use. Include electricity, internet, storage, and any replacement or maintenance costs in your own estimate; they vary by location and hardware.
Prepare stories, rights, and the audience setting
Clear rights before streaming
“Prerecorded” does not exempt a stream from copyright rules. Make sure you have the rights needed for the story text, narration, illustrations, music, and other material in both the live broadcast and any archived replay. Mark content made for children accurately
If the story stream is directed to children, select the appropriate Made for Kids audience setting in Live Control Room. YouTube says creators are responsible for setting the audience accurately rather than relying on automated classification alone. This setting affects the experience: YouTube lists restrictions that include live chat, comments, personalized advertising, and Super Chat and Super Stickers. Set up a YouTube Live stream with OBS
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. If live streaming is not enabled, follow the channel’s onboarding prompts and confirm eligibility before preparing a long broadcast. YouTube live-stream onboarding
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one and choose the encoder workflow. Set the title, visibility, and audience designation before going public.

- Choose output settings that suit the content and connection. YouTube currently recommends RTMPS. For typical SDR H.264 output, its guidance specifies CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). The recommended H.264 video bitrate is 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a measurement or guarantee of your internet service. - Test the actual stream. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public. Confirm the story video and audio play as intended at the selected settings.

For a mostly static illustrated story, 720p30 can be a sensible starting point if you want to reduce load on an older computer or work within limited upload capacity. That is a practical inference from the content and YouTube’s settings, not a tested quality result. Use a bitrate your connection can sustain and check YouTube’s health indicators rather than assuming the listed ingest figure guarantees stable delivery.
Plan for restarts, replays, and 24/7 reliability
A continuous stream from a home computer is an operating goal, not a service guarantee. A power cut, router or ISP fault, overheating, OBS crash, or damaged source file can interrupt it. Use a wired connection if practical, keep the computer ventilated, verify the story file, and decide who will notice and recover an interruption. The cited guidance does not establish a required upload-speed margin, a power-use figure, or an uptime rate for a consumer computer.
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its documentation does not establish automatic archiving for longer streams or promise uninterrupted availability. If preserving replays matters, plan broadcasts shorter than that threshold and verify current Live Control Room behavior; this can mean scheduled restarts. Children’s streams, monetization, and repetition
Do not build a budget around unrestricted chat or personalized ads on a Made for Kids stream. YouTube lists feature restrictions for this audience setting, including limits on live chat, comments, personalized advertising, and Super Chat or Super Stickers.
