Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf you want a dedicated, low-power Jellyfin server, compare an Intel N-series mini PC—especially systems built around the Intel N100—with hardware you already own. Jellyfin identifies 12th-generation-or-newer Intel N-series systems as low-power options and names the N100 among its integrated-graphics recommendations. That makes it a sensible category to investigate, not a verified cheapest model or a guarantee of a particular number of streams.
Before buying anything, work out whether your devices can direct-play your media or whether the server will need to transcode it. That requirement often matters more than a host’s size or advertised price.
Which alternatives are worth considering?
The best low-cost replacement depends on what you already own, how much transcoding your library requires, and the total cost of a usable setup. Jellyfin’s Hardware Selection guide names several platform categories, but it does not establish a universal cheapest choice.
| Option | What Jellyfin’s guidance supports | Best fit | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intel N-series mini PC, 12th generation or newer | Jellyfin lists this class as a low-power option and names Intel N100 among its integrated-graphics recommendations. | A compact, dedicated host where supported Intel hardware acceleration may be useful. | Check the exact processor, operating system and driver support, RAM, storage, and current complete price. No particular model is established as the cheapest. |
| Used Intel system with integrated graphics and Quick Sync | Jellyfin supports Intel QSV. Its hardware guide says existing 7th–10th generation Intel systems with integrated graphics remain capable, although they were removed from its purchase recommendation list. | You already have a suitable system or can source one at low cost. | Power use, condition, codec support, and driver support vary by machine; results for one system do not establish results for another. |
| Apple M-series Mac mini | Jellyfin lists M-series Mac mini systems as low-power server platforms and Apple Video Toolbox as supported on macOS. | You already own one or want a compact computer for uses beyond Jellyfin. | The cited guidance does not establish its current price or value compared with an N-series mini PC. |
| Rockchip RK3588/RK3588S single-board computer (SBC) | Jellyfin lists these as potential low-power SBC platforms for advanced users; RKMPP is a supported acceleration method on Linux. | You are comfortable with board-specific setup and want an SBC. | Confirm the exact board’s operating system, kernel, and acceleration configuration. Jellyfin’s advanced-user qualification makes this a less straightforward route. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 or most other SBCs | Jellyfin cautions that most SBCs often lack proper hardware acceleration and says the Pi 5 lacks hardware encoders. | Mostly direct-play use or experimentation where you accept the limitations. | Not a default choice for a server expected to transcode. Jellyfin says Raspberry Pi V4L2 support is deprecated. |
| Prebuilt NAS appliance | Jellyfin notes that third-party software can be difficult to install on many appliances and that some have low-end CPUs. | You have identified a specific appliance with adequate hardware and a supported installation route. | Verify its CPU, architecture, installation method, and hardware-acceleration support rather than assuming NAS devices are interchangeable. |
Why an Intel N-series mini PC is a strong starting point
Intel N-series is a concrete category to compare when you want a small, dedicated host. Jellyfin’s guide includes Intel 12th-generation-or-newer N-series systems among its low-power options and names the N100 in its integrated-graphics recommendations. Treat the N100 as a search starting point—not proof that a particular mini PC is the least expensive or will handle every library.

When an older computer is the cheaper choice
A suitable used Intel computer may cost less upfront than a new mini PC, especially if it is already available to you. Jellyfin says existing Intel 7th–10th generation systems with integrated graphics remain capable, while its current hardware-acceleration documentation supports Intel QSV. Check the specific machine’s graphics hardware, software support, condition, and power use before relying on it as an always-on server.
Why a Raspberry Pi 5 is not the default for transcoding
Jellyfin’s Hardware Selection page says most SBCs, particularly the Raspberry Pi 5, can be too slow for an acceptable experience because they often lack proper hardware-acceleration support. Its Hardware Acceleration documentation says the Pi 5 lacks hardware encoders and that Raspberry Pi V4L2 support is deprecated. A Pi may still suit a mostly direct-play setup or an experiment, but those limitations make it a less dependable default when you expect the server to transcode.

Decide whether your server needs to transcode
Direct play means a client can play a media file in its existing format, so the server does not have to convert the video for that playback. Transcoding is the on-the-fly conversion of media for a client or playback condition. Remote playback, incompatible codecs, subtitles, and tone-mapping can increase the need for server-side processing. Jellyfin’s Transcoding guide explains this part of the workload.
If most intended clients can direct-play your library, a modest host may be sufficient for your use. If you need transcoding, check that the exact host and operating system can use an acceleration method supported by Jellyfin; a processor name alone cannot establish a reliable stream count or outcome.

Budget for a complete, usable setup
A low sticker price is not the same as a low total cost. Include the host, memory, operating-system and cache storage, media-library storage, and a suitable wired network connection. Jellyfin’s Hardware Selection guide provides baseline recommendations, not guarantees that every deployment will perform the same way.
- System memory: Jellyfin recommends 8 GB of RAM for an average deployment and says 4 GB may be enough for Linux without a graphical interface. These are project recommendations, not workload-specific minimums.
- Operating-system and cache storage: Jellyfin recommends a 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache. This is separate from the capacity needed for the media library; Jellyfin says to consider more depending on media files and concurrent streams.
- Media storage: Add the cost and capacity of the drive or other storage you will use for your library. The 100 GB SSD recommendation does not cover the library itself.
- Network: Jellyfin recommends gigabit Ethernet or faster and does not recommend Wi-Fi or powerline networking for a server. If the host lacks Ethernet, include an appropriate adapter and check that it is compatible.
- Remote access bandwidth: Jellyfin recommends at least 20 Mbps upload for remote access. For a total upload connection below 100 Mbps, its guide suggests setting a 70% bandwidth limit. These are project recommendations, not guarantees of smooth playback for every household or media file.
The cited guidance does not provide comparable power measurements, a region-specific total-cost comparison, or a universal stream count for these complete configurations. Compare current local prices and measure idle and workload power on the exact systems you are considering rather than assuming a particular option will be cheapest to run.

Quick Recap
Use this checklist before choosing
- List your playback devices and media formats. Identify which clients can direct-play the files you actually watch and where transcoding may be needed.
- Check the exact host’s acceleration path. Confirm the processor or graphics hardware, operating system, drivers, and Jellyfin-supported method for the codecs and processing your playback requires.
- Calculate the complete local cost. Include the host, RAM, system SSD, library storage, network accessories, and any parts needed to make the setup usable.
- Compare real power use. Look for measurements of the exact machine at idle and under your expected workload; the official guidance cited here does not provide directly comparable wattage figures.
- Account for setup and maintenance. A used computer may be economical if you can verify its condition and support. An SBC may take more board-specific setup; a NAS appliance may have installation or CPU limitations.
- Consider practical fit. Compare physical size, noise, expandability, wired networking, and where the device can stay powered on.
