The right choice depends on whether you need a full scene-based production setup, separate audio for editing, or straightforward gameplay capture.

For most streamers, start with OBS if you need scenes, sources, overlays, and control over the recording output. If your priority is capturing gameplay without managing a full production layout, check whether the capture software for your supported NVIDIA or AMD hardware covers what you need.
OBS Studio: the most flexible general-purpose starting point
OBS’s standard recording guide documents both recording during a broadcast and recording solely for offline use. You can configure the recording path, format, quality, and—under Advanced output—audio tracks. That makes it a practical choice when the same scenes and sources serve your live show and your local archive.

Choose a format that can survive an unexpected stop
OBS recommends recording to MKV when resilience to an ungraceful application or system stop matters: an interruption is less likely to corrupt the entire file. If your editor or destination needs MP4, use OBS’s built-in remuxing feature to convert the completed MKV recording. See the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide for the format and remux workflow.
Plan audio tracks before going live
If you may want to change microphone and game or desktop audio independently in editing, set up the recording tracks before the session and confirm the sources are assigned as intended. Track selection is available through OBS Advanced output. Make a short test recording and check it in the editor you plan to use; a track-selection setting is useful only if the actual file contains the separation you need.

Check workload, not just minimum compatibility
OBS cautions that meeting its system requirements does not mean a computer can record or stream at every chosen setting. Encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect workload. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test with representative scenes and capture sources before relying on a long session. When Streamlabs Desktop makes sense
Streamlabs Desktop is a reasonable alternative if its packaged workflow suits your setup. Its getting-started guide documents a recording-only choice and importing OBS settings. Its recording documentation also describes selective recording, which lets a creator choose what appears in the recording, and multitrack recording for workflows such as separating microphone and desktop audio.

These features can help when the live output and the version you want to edit are not identical, or when you need audio separation in post. They are not evidence that Streamlabs performs better than OBS on a particular computer. When GPU capture tools are a better fit
NVIDIA App
For a supported NVIDIA system and a gameplay-first workflow, NVIDIA App provides Record and Instant Replay through its overlay. NVIDIA’s feature overview describes microphone capture, sound-source selection, saving microphone audio separately, quality adjustment, and choosing a save location. It is a simpler direction to investigate if you mainly need gameplay or highlights rather than a complete scene-based broadcast setup. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
AMD documents recording settings for desktop and gameplay capture, microphone and camera selection, and Instant Replay. Its guide describes replay capture of the previous 20 minutes, but says available options vary by system configuration. It also warns that gameplay recordings can use substantial storage. The illustrated steps use Adrenalin 23.9.1 and an RX 7900 XTX, so control names and availability may differ on other systems. See AMD’s recording settings guide.
Set up a dependable local recording
- Pick the recording workflow. Decide whether you need scenes and sources shared with a live broadcast, an offline recording, selective recording, separate audio tracks, or gameplay-only capture. Choose software and configure it for that goal before the session.
- Choose a save location and check capacity. Confirm the recording path points to a drive with enough free space for the session. AMD specifically warns that gameplay recordings can be very large. An external SSD is an optional way to manage files or add space, not a software requirement.
- Set the format and audio tracks. In OBS, configure the recording path, format, and quality in its recording output settings; use Advanced output when selecting audio tracks. For an unexpectedly interrupted session, OBS recommends MKV and provides remuxing to MP4 afterward. In Streamlabs or GPU capture software, check the corresponding recording controls and confirm the result with a test file.
- Verify the GPU assignment on a laptop. If the computer has integrated and discrete GPUs, check which GPU runs OBS. OBS notes that running it on the integrated GPU while a game uses the discrete GPU can interfere with Game Capture or performance. Follow the OBS GPU Selection Guide for the relevant system guidance.
- Test the real workload. Record a short sample using the intended scenes, sources, resolution, frame rate, and encoder. Check that the picture is smooth, audio sources are present on the intended tracks, and the file opens in your editor. Adjust settings if the computer struggles; there is no universal best resolution or encoder established for every machine.
Troubleshooting common recording problems
