There is no single best load-testing tool for every team. Grafana k6 is a strong starting point for developers who want tests written as code and integrated with CI/CD. Apache JMeter or Locust may fit better when their protocols, scripts, or team skills align with your needs. If you want hosted execution and managed test engines, consider Azure Load Testing, AWS Distributed Load Testing, or Grafana Cloud k6. Choose based on the workload you need to represent, not a vendor’s headline capacity claim.
How to choose a load-testing tool
A load test is useful only when its scenarios and traffic patterns represent the system’s expected use. Before comparing products, write down what you need to simulate and how you will decide whether the system passed.
- Workload and protocol: Identify the endpoints and protocols your application uses, and whether you need to model complete user flows or API requests.
- Traffic shape: Decide whether you need a steady load, a ramp-up, bursts, or a particular arrival rate. Confirm that the tool can express the traffic pattern you intend to test.
- Authoring: Choose an approach the team can maintain: code in a familiar language, a graphical interface, or existing scripts.
- Execution: Consider whether a local generator can produce the required load, or whether you need distributed or hosted test engines. Generator limits can affect what a test actually measures.
- Automation and analysis: Check for CI/CD integration, pass/fail thresholds, result retention, dashboards, and integration with your observability stack.
- Security and cost: Review where test data and results are processed, framework versions and patching responsibilities, and total cost at your expected test volume.
For a team starting from scratch, a practical first comparison is k6 for tests-as-code, JMeter or Locust when their scripting and protocol fit matters, and a managed service when operating distributed generators is not something the team wants to own.
Best load-testing tools by use case
Grafana k6: tests written in JavaScript or TypeScript
Grafana k6 is an open-source load-testing tool whose engine is written in Go. You author tests in JavaScript or TypeScript, then run them locally or in the cloud. Its official materials describe CI/CD integration, configurable traffic patterns, checks and thresholds, and integrations for sending results to supported backends. Consider it when developers want version-controlled tests and automated pass/fail criteria. See the k6 documentation.

Grafana Cloud k6: hosted execution and analysis
Grafana Cloud k6 is worth considering when you want hosted distributed tests, collaboration, dashboards, or correlation with observability data. Grafana’s product page, checked in 2026, displayed the following prices and allowance; pricing and quotas can change, so confirm them before choosing a plan.
| Plan | Displayed price or allowance |
|---|---|
| Free | $0; 500 virtual-user hours per month |
| Pro | $0.15 per virtual-user hour, plus a $19 monthly platform fee |
| Enterprise | From $0.05 per virtual-user hour, with a $25,000 annual minimum |
Grafana also advertises capacity of up to 1 million concurrent virtual users or 5 million requests per second. Those are vendor-stated capability figures, not independent benchmark results. See Grafana Cloud k6 for current plan details.
Apache JMeter: an established option with GUI authoring
JMeter is a relevant choice when your team’s existing test plans, protocol needs, or preferred GUI-based authoring fit it. Both Azure Load Testing and AWS Distributed Load Testing document support for JMeter. The available evidence does not establish that JMeter is categorically easier, faster, or more compatible than the alternatives, so validate it against your application and test requirements. See the Apache JMeter project.

Azure Load Testing: managed engines and live metrics
Azure Load Testing provides managed test engines, dashboards with client and server metrics, and CI/CD integration. Microsoft documents support for JMeter and Locust and says the service can target applications hosted in Azure, on-premises, or elsewhere. It may suit teams that want managed execution without limiting tests to Azure-hosted applications. Microsoft Learn’s overview was last updated August 7, 2025; check the Azure Load Testing overview for current service details.
AWS Distributed Load Testing: distributed runs with framework caveats
AWS Distributed Load Testing supports JMeter, k6, and Locust through Taurus, and its traffic configuration can use more than one AWS region. AWS also warns that the bundled JMeter version has known security vulnerabilities that cannot be fully patched externally without breaking compatibility with its Taurus integration and plugin ecosystem. AWS says users are responsible for evaluating bundled frameworks against their security requirements. Review the framework version and patching implications before using the service. See AWS Distributed Load Testing documentation.

Review the project’s current documentation and product information against your workload and operating requirements before shortlisting it. See Gatling.
Which tool should you use for API load testing?
Start with the API’s protocols, request patterns, and the behavior you need to measure. For a developer-led team that wants JavaScript or TypeScript tests, configurable traffic, and CI/CD thresholds, k6 is a reasonable first tool to evaluate. If your API test plans already use JMeter, or your organization wants to author with Locust, Azure and AWS both document support for those frameworks. For hosted distributed execution, compare Grafana Cloud k6, Azure Load Testing, and AWS Distributed Load Testing on security controls, regions, observability, setup, and the price at your anticipated volume.

Whichever tool you select, make the scenario representative: include the requests and user flows that matter, choose a traffic pattern that reflects expected demand, and define thresholds before the run. A test that generates a large number of requests but fails to represent real use can mislead more than it helps.

How to run load tests in CI/CD
Put the test definition under version control and make the pipeline report an explicit result. The exact setup depends on the framework and execution service; do not assume that a successful test-process exit alone means the application met its performance targets.
- Define the scenario: Specify the endpoints or user flow, input data, duration, and traffic pattern you intend to exercise.
- Set pass/fail thresholds: Choose the response-time, error-rate, or other criteria relevant to your service. k6 supports checks and thresholds; confirm the equivalent reporting behavior for your chosen framework.
- Choose where the test runs: Use a local generator for an appropriately sized test, or select hosted/distributed execution if you need managed engines or traffic from multiple regions.
- Integrate execution with the pipeline: Trigger the test at a suitable stage and configure the pipeline to surface its result. For a hosted service, use its documented CI/CD integration.
- Review both client and server evidence: Compare test results with application and infrastructure metrics where available. A generator that is itself constrained may not deliver the intended load.
- Control test impact and data: Confirm the target environment, authorization, test-data handling, and expected traffic before running tests, especially against production systems.
Cost, capacity, and reliability considerations
For a self-run tool, account for the time and resources required to operate generators and interpret results. For hosted services, estimate usage using the provider’s current pricing model and your expected test frequency and scale. Grafana Cloud k6’s listed virtual-user-hour prices and platform fee are a snapshot from its page checked in 2026, not a promise of future rates.
Do not treat advertised maximum capacity as proof that a service will deliver the same load for your scenario. Grafana’s figures are vendor claims, not independent measurements. Likewise, multi-region traffic can make a test more representative when geography matters, but it does not by itself guarantee workload realism. Validate results against the behavior and metrics of the system under test.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not
ScreenshotNeo is not a load-testing tool and does not replace k6, JMeter, Locust, or a managed load-testing service. It is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. If the adjacent task is capturing a website screenshot rather than generating load, consider ScreenshotNeo: it removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and says that bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo.
