OBS Studio is the best place for most creators to start if they want control over scene transitions without paying for streaming software. It supports built-in transitions, configurable timing, hotkeys, Studio Mode preview, and user-supplied stinger videos. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you want its documented Motion Effect to animate sources between scenes; consider Wirecast for a more production-oriented setup with multiple cameras or remote guests.
These tools serve different production workflows. This guide compares their documented transition capabilities and helps you choose by the effect you want, your computer, and the complexity of your show. No common-benchmark testing was conducted, so the recommendations are based on official product documentation, not claims that one app performs faster or more reliably.
Which streaming software has the best custom scene transitions?
For the broadest documented control at no software cost, choose OBS Studio. Its transition options include fades, cuts, wipes, slides, and stinger transitions using a video file you provide. You can configure transition duration, use Quick Transitions, and preview a scene before taking it live.
“Custom transition” can mean different things. A stinger is a branded video asset that plays between scenes; a wipe or slide is a built-in transition style; and an animated source transition moves an element such as a camera frame between positions. Decide which behavior you need before choosing software.

Compare the main options
| Software | Documented transition capabilities | Best fit | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Fade and Cut are available from first launch. The overview guide also describes Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, Luma Wipe, configurable duration, Quick Transitions, and custom stinger video files. | Creators who want flexible scene composition, custom assets, hotkeys, and preview control without paying for the software. | It offers substantial setup control. Streaming at 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps; results depend on the encoder, resolution, scene complexity, and computer. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Motion Effect animates sources shared between two scenes from one position to another. A source present in only one scene zooms in or out. Streamlabs published its instructions for this feature on April 25, 2025. | Creators who specifically want on-screen elements to move between scenes and prefer Streamlabs’ guided setup. | The cited guidance establishes this Motion Effect behavior; it does not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison with OBS. |
| Wirecast | Its product page emphasizes live switching and production capabilities, including multiview and, in Wirecast Pro, additional production tools. The source does not establish a specific custom-transition feature set for direct comparison. | Multicamera or remote-guest productions where broader switching and production features may matter more than streamer-oriented simplicity. | More production capability can bring added complexity and cost. The cited page’s pricing and subscription terms may change. |

Choose by the transition you want
For a simple cut or fade
OBS includes Cut and Fade among the options described in its overview guide. These work well when the priority is a clean change between a starting screen, camera, presentation, or gameplay scene rather than a branded animation.

For a wipe, slide, or color transition
OBS documents Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe as additional choices. You can set the duration and configure Quick Transitions, which makes it practical to keep a simple transition available for fast switching while using another effect for deliberate scene changes.
For a branded video stinger
OBS supports stinger transitions using a video file that you supply. The software does not generate your branded animation automatically: you need to create or obtain the video asset and configure it as a transition. Check that the visual timing works with the cut between scenes before using it on a live show.

For movement of elements between scenes
Streamlabs Desktop’s documented Motion Effect is designed for source movement. A source included in both scenes animates from its placement in the first scene to its placement in the second; a source included in only one scene zooms in or out. If you want a logo, camera frame, or other overlay to visibly shift as the scene changes, this behavior may suit that goal better than a full-frame wipe.
Set up transitions in OBS
OBS scenes are compositions of sources, such as a game or window capture, camera or capture card, image, text, or display capture. The exact source choices depend on your show and equipment. The OBS Overview Guide describes Studio Mode and the transition controls; interface details may change between releases.

- Create scenes and add sources. In OBS, make a scene for each part of the show, such as an opening, main content, and break screen. Add the relevant capture, camera, image, or text sources to each scene.
- Choose a transition. Use the scene-transition controls to select an available option such as Fade or Cut. For a branded stinger, add and configure your own video file as the transition asset.
- Set the timing. Adjust the transition duration to suit the effect. A short change can feel immediate; a longer duration makes the transition more prominent. Preview the result rather than assuming a duration will look right for every asset.
- Use Studio Mode to preview. Studio Mode lets you prepare or adjust a scene in preview before transitioning it to the live output. Check framing, text, and source visibility before sending the scene live.
- Assign hotkeys if useful. OBS supports hotkeys for switching to a specific scene. If you use a programmable physical control pad, it can trigger scene hotkeys; it does not create transition effects, and a keyboard works too. Elgato discusses Stream Deck integration with streaming software in its streaming software overview.
- Test the complete show before going live. Switch through the scenes, verify each transition, and check that sources appear where expected. OBS recommends testing configured scenes and settings before a first live stream.
Check computer and upload capacity
Transition choice is only one part of a streaming setup. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity, and the number of sources affect the work your computer must do. OBS warns that 60-fps output can be substantially more taxing than 30 fps; its system requirements guidance also notes that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee that a particular streaming or recording workload will run well.
- Streamlabs guidance: its system requirements page recommends Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 and higher, 16 GB or more of RAM, and an Ethernet connection. These are vendor recommendations, not universal minimums or a performance guarantee.
- Upload-speed example: Streamlabs gives 3.6 Mbps or better as a typical guide for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. That is vendor guidance, not a universal platform requirement. Check the requirements for your chosen platform and leave headroom for network variation.
- Choose frame rate deliberately: if the computer struggles at 60 fps, test 30 fps before adding complexity. A demanding transition is not useful if the stream becomes unstable or the video output drops frames.
These figures come from Streamlabs’ published guidance, which can change. Actual requirements vary with the stream’s settings and production.

Common problems and fixes
- The stinger does not look like a clean scene change: the effect depends on the video asset and its timing. Preview it between the actual scenes and adjust the transition configuration or replace the asset if the cut is obscured or mistimed.
- A Streamlabs source does not move between scenes: Motion Effect animates sources shared by the two scenes. Confirm the source appears in both and that its position differs between them. A source present in only one scene follows the documented zoom-in or zoom-out behavior instead.
- The preview differs from the live output: use Studio Mode to inspect the preview, then explicitly transition it to the live output. Verify the scene that is actually live before making further changes.
- Streaming becomes taxing after increasing frame rate or scene complexity: reduce the frame rate or simplify the scene and test again. OBS notes the increased demands associated with 60 fps, and the load also depends on encoding, resolution, and sources.
- A scene switch is awkward to trigger: configure OBS hotkeys and rehearse the sequence. A physical programmable control pad is optional; it is simply another way to activate shortcuts.
Or let it run in the cloud
Scene-transition software is for live production control. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream a camera feed.
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. The service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
