How to choose live streaming software
Start with what you need to produce, not a feature-count contest. - Computer capacity: Operating-system compatibility does not guarantee that a particular computer can encode a complex scene smoothly. Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity affect hardware demands.
- Cost: Compare the current plan terms against the features you will actually use. Streamlabs describes Ultra as optional; check its current pricing and entitlements before subscribing.

Choose OBS Studio for hands-on production control
The OBS Project describes OBS as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” Its scene-based workflow lets you combine sources, switch scenes with transitions, and shape audio with filters and VST support. That flexibility suits creators who want to build and tune their own production rather than rely on a bundled setup.
OBS lists Windows 10 and 11 support, macOS 13.0 or newer, and Linux installation options. These are compatibility statements, not performance guarantees. Use OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the actual scenes and settings you plan to use.

Choose Streamlabs Desktop for guided setup and bundled tools
Streamlabs Desktop offers guided onboarding and tools including widgets, themes, and alerts. Streamlabs says Desktop can stream to Twitch, YouTube Live, TikTok, and more, and its FAQ describes multistreaming. Check its current official terms for destination support, account eligibility, and any plan restrictions before relying on a particular combination.
Streamlabs’ onboarding guide, published May 20, 2026, gives example minimum configurations of Windows 11 or macOS 12, 8 GB of RAM, integrated graphics, and 10 GB of storage. Its recommended configuration is Windows 11 or macOS 13 or newer, 16 GB of RAM, an 11th- or 12th-generation Intel Core i5 or Ryzen 5 5600X or better, RTX 20/30- or RX 5000/6000-series graphics, and an SSD of 512 GB or larger. These are vendor-published guidance, not universal requirements or a promise that a particular stream will run smoothly.

Check your computer and stream format before committing
Compatibility is not the same as smooth encoding
A supported operating system only tells you the software can run on that platform. It does not establish how well your specific machine will handle your chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, sources, and effects together. Begin with the software’s setup guidance, then test a private or unlisted stream with the real scene you plan to use. Watch for dropped frames, audio problems, or an overloaded encoder before scheduling a public broadcast.
Design for horizontal or vertical output
If you plan to use YouTube’s vertical live feed, build and preview a layout intended for vertical viewing rather than assuming a horizontal scene will translate cleanly. If you want simultaneous multistreaming, confirm that the software, destination accounts, and current plan terms support your exact setup.

Do you need extra equipment?
No accessory is required just because you use streaming software. A webcam, microphone, capture card, or more capable computer only makes sense if your format and current setup need it. For example, a capture card is not universally necessary, and some formats do not require a dedicated camera.
A Stream Deck-style control pad can help creators who repeatedly switch scenes or trigger production actions. It is an optional workflow accessory, not a prerequisite for streaming. A 2022 UC San Diego study discusses such devices in livestream equipment setups; it does not establish a current popularity ranking.

- Choosing by the longest feature list: Identify which tools you will use, then compare those specific needs.
- Assuming compatible means powerful enough: Test the intended scene and encoding workload on your own machine.
- Assuming a destination or multistream feature is included: Verify current destination support, account eligibility, and plan restrictions with the software provider.
