The best live broadcast software depends on how students will participate. For an interactive class managed by a school or university, start with Zoom Workplace for Education and confirm the education-license terms. For a polished webinar or instructor-led broadcast, compare StreamYard. If you want custom camera-and-slide scenes, OBS Studio can feed a compatible meeting app—but OBS is a production layer, not a virtual classroom.
Choose software for the kind of class you teach
Before comparing prices, decide whether the session is primarily a class meeting, a produced broadcast, or a meeting with a custom visual layout. These tools solve different problems: meeting controls and student interaction are not interchangeable with overlays, recording, or webinar presentation.
| Workflow | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom Workplace for Education | School or university classes centered on live interaction and institutional administration. | Education-license eligibility, minimum licenses, meeting capacity and duration, storage, and any separate streaming configuration. |
| StreamYard | Instructor-led broadcasts or webinars where browser access, branding, guests, multistreaming, and recorded output matter. | Free-plan restrictions, paid-plan limits, viewer capacity, recording and storage, and whether an organization needs a Business plan. |
| OBS Studio plus meeting software | Teachers who want to compose camera, slides, and other sources into a scene and show that scene inside a meeting. | Setup time, operating-system compatibility, the meeting app’s virtual-camera support, and a fallback camera. |
No cited source establishes one universally best product or proves that a particular platform improves learning outcomes. Choose based on your teaching format, student access, institutional requirements, and the controls you need.

The education pricing page listed School and Campus at $10 per user per month billed annually and School and Campus Plus at $15 per user per month billed annually, each with a 20-license minimum. Those are dated page figures, not a general-purpose commercial webinar rate. Zoom states that Education users are intended for “student, faculty, staff and alumni for pedagogical interaction within a classroom environment, or the administration thereof” and may not be used for a commercial purpose. A school or university should verify that the intended use, account, and procurement arrangement meet current terms.
Streaming a Zoom class to a custom site
If you need a public or embedded stream rather than a normal meeting room, Zoom’s custom live-streaming workflow has additional account and host requirements. Zoom Support says custom streaming must be enabled by an account admin; the meeting requires a Pro, Business, Education, or Enterprise account and a licensed host, with the desktop app on Windows or macOS. Webinar streaming also requires a Zoom Webinars license. Zoom notes that HD video should be enabled for higher quality. Check your account and current app version before class; the cited support page also describes streaming to YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook.

Webinar access and audience interaction
StreamYard On-Air supports a hosted or embedded webinar page, registration forms, and viewer chat, according to its help article. The article says viewers do not need to download software or create an account. It also states that chat comments are visible to all participants when enabled, with no per-comment visibility control. If a class needs private questions, student roll call, or tightly managed discussion, check whether the interaction model fits before relying on On-Air chat.
StreamYard says its Core and Advanced self-service plans are for individual use; organizations using a company email domain may need its Business plan. Verify current organizational terms and plan details if you are buying for a school or department.

Use OBS when you need custom scenes inside a class meeting
OBS Studio can compose a camera-and-slides layout, then present that scene to meeting software as a virtual webcam. The OBS Virtual Camera Guide explains that OBS output can be shared with applications that accept a webcam, including Zoom. Available output choices include the program, preview, a selected scene, or a selected source. The meeting app still provides the classroom interaction; OBS does not provide class registration, student management, or a conferencing room.
- Install OBS and prepare your scene. Add the camera, slides, or other sources you want students to see. Arrange and test the composition before class.
- Start the OBS virtual camera. In OBS, use the Virtual Camera control and choose the output mode that matches what you intend to show, such as the program or a selected scene.
- Select OBS in the meeting app. In the meeting software’s camera settings, choose the OBS virtual camera as the camera input. Confirm that audio is routed separately and that students can hear you.
- Test the complete path. Check framing, slide legibility, audio, and scene changes in a test meeting. Keep a direct webcam option available if the virtual-camera path fails.
The OBS troubleshooting guide is dated August 31, 2022. It notes that macOS compatibility depends on version and that Linux virtual-camera use requires v4l2loopback. Check the current OBS documentation and your operating system and meeting-app versions before relying on this setup.

Compare student access, controls, and total cost
For a class, a low headline price or high video resolution does not answer the central questions. Compare how students join, who can speak or ask questions, whether attendance and moderation controls fit your needs, and whether the host can record or stream as required.
- Student access: Determine whether students need an account, app download, registration, or school-managed login. StreamYard says On-Air viewers need no download or account; confirm what your chosen meeting platform and institution require.
- Audience size and duration: Match the actual class roster and session length to plan limits. Zoom’s cited education page listed a 30-hour meeting limit and 300 participants for the named School and Campus plans; StreamYard’s cited page listed 100 On-Air viewers for Advanced.
- Interaction and moderation: Decide whether you need students on camera, private questions, hand-raising, or simply a one-way presentation. StreamYard On-Air chat, when enabled, is visible to all participants and has no per-comment visibility control.
- Recording and storage: Check the recording allowance and where files are kept, especially if sessions must be retained or shared later. Listed limits can vary by plan.
- Administration and eligibility: Schools should confirm license purpose, domain requirements, procurement rules, and minimum purchase counts before committing.
- Destination: Separate a private class meeting from a public or embedded broadcast. Streaming features may require specific account tiers, licenses, host status, or administrator settings.
For the prices and plan limits above, the relevant vendor pages were accessed October 3, 2026. They are volatile product details; check the current pricing and support pages before purchase or a time-sensitive class.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different use case—a YouTube channel that should keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 live stream—StreamNeo is the #1 option to consider: it runs continuously from the cloud, streams uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not a live camera class or an interactive classroom meeting. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
