There is no single best LiteLLM replacement for every team. Choose Portkey if you want hosted routing and governance, OpenRouter if managed access to many models matters more than operating your own proxy, or Cloudflare AI Gateway if it fits your existing Cloudflare platform. Vercel AI SDK is an application toolkit, not a like-for-like gateway replacement.

Start by identifying what you need to replace

LiteLLM’s official documentation describes its open-source fundamentals as “an OpenAI-compatible gateway, virtual keys, spend tracking, budgets, fallbacks, and request/response logging.” (LiteLLM Enterprise documentation) A useful alternative must replace the functions your team actually relies on, not just offer access to multiple models.

  • Unified provider API: Check supported providers, model coverage, and compatibility with your existing requests.
  • Routing and resilience: Look for routing, retries, load balancing, and failover if these keep production traffic running.
  • Keys and governance: Compare virtual keys, budgets, role-based access, SSO, guardrails, auditability, and any residency or compliance requirements.
  • Spend visibility: Verify request logs, usage attribution, retention, exports, and whether plan limits suit your workload.
  • Deployment control: Decide whether you need self-hosting or private deployment, or whether a hosted service is acceptable after reviewing its data-processing and retention terms.
  • Full operating cost: Count platform fees and overages, model-provider charges, and the engineering and operational effort of running a gateway yourself.

Portkey: hosted gateway features and governance

Portkey is the closest like-for-like option among these choices when you want a gateway with routing and governance features but prefer a hosted service. Its pricing page lists routing, retries, load balancing, observability, guardrails, prompt management, and role-based access controls. The listed plans and limits are:

These are the prices and limits displayed on Portkey’s pricing page when accessed in 2026. The page describes private-cloud and VPC options, along with advanced compliance features, for Enterprise. Those are vendor-listed capabilities, not an independent assessment of whether a plan meets your security or compliance obligations. Confirm current plan terms for your deployment and request volume before committing.

OpenRouter: managed model access without running a proxy

OpenRouter is a hosted API option for teams that value managed access to many models and want to avoid operating their own proxy. That convenience means less deployment control than self-hosting. Review its data-processing terms, model availability, and costs against your requirements on the OpenRouter official site.

A 2026 secondary comparison reports a 5.5% fee on credit purchases (LLM Gateway comparison). Treat that as a claim from that comparison, not a guaranteed current charge; check OpenRouter’s terms before budgeting. Model counts in comparison articles can also differ or become outdated, so do not treat them as a fixed measure of current catalog breadth.

Private LoRaWAN Gateway (US 915MHz) | Built-in Local Server & Node-RED | 8-Channel Indoor IoT Hub for Smart Agriculture | No Monthly Fees, All-in-One Edge Server
  • NO SUBSCRIPTION FEES & PRIVATE LORAWAN NETWORK: Build a local LoRaWAN IoT network with the built-in SIoT server and pre-installed Node-RED. Collect data, create dashboards, and run automation flows locally without required cloud service fees. Suitable for DIY makers, home gardeners, educators, and small IoT prototype projects.
  • LOCAL DATA PROCESSING & PRIVACY CONTROL: Sensor data can be processed on the local network through the built‑in MQTT/SIoT server, reducing reliance on third‑party cloud platforms. Local automation rules continue running when internet access is unavailable — suitable for home, garden, greenhouse, and classroom IoT setups.
  • 4KM COVERAGE & 8-CHANNEL RELIABILITY: Equipped with the SX1302 8-channel LoRaWAN chip, -140dBm sensitivity, 27dBm max transmit power, and included 5dBi antenna. Supports up to 4km coverage in open environments, helping connect garden sensors, greenhouse nodes, garages, mailboxes, and remote monitoring points.
  • NODE-RED DRAG-AND-DROP VISUAL AUTOMATION:Automation rules, data dashboards, and control logic can be built with little to no coding using the pre‑installed Node‑RED. Flows such as reading soil moisture, checking temperature, and sending relay commands are created through a visual interface — reducing setup time for maker, education, and prototype projects.
  • EASY SETUP WITH WIFI AP & MQTT INTEGRATION: Configure the gateway via Wi-Fi AP mode using a laptop or mobile device. Built-in MQTT broker supports integration with Node-RED dashboards, and other MQTT-compatible platforms. Designed for indoor residential, educational, and prototyping use; not intended for outdoor installation.

Cloudflare AI Gateway: a fit to assess within a Cloudflare platform

Consider Cloudflare AI Gateway if your team’s existing platform context makes a managed Cloudflare gateway a practical fit. Cloudflare publishes an AI Gateway overview and pricing documentation. Check the official pricing page for the limits and fees that apply to your exact plan rather than relying on figures in third-party comparisons, which can go stale.

Vercel AI SDK: useful for applications, but not a gateway equivalent

Vercel AI SDK is an open-source TypeScript toolkit, not a gateway or proxy, according to a 2026 comparison (Layer3 Labs comparison). It may suit a team looking for a unified interface in its application, but it does not automatically provide a centralized shared layer for routing and governance. See the Vercel AI SDK documentation.

Direct provider APIs: fewer gateway layers, more integration work

Calling providers directly is an architectural alternative if you do not need a shared gateway. Expect more provider-specific integration work; compare that maintenance burden with the value of centralized routing, keys, governance, and usage visibility.

Make the choice against your production requirements

Use these questions to turn the shortlist into a deployment decision:

  1. Set the deployment boundary. Determine whether a hosted service is acceptable or whether self-hosting, a VPC, or private-cloud deployment is necessary. Review each candidate’s data-processing and retention terms.
  2. Map the traffic path. List the providers and models you need, then check API compatibility, routing, retries, load balancing, and failover against the way your application sends requests.
  3. Define governance controls. Identify which of budgets, virtual keys, RBAC, SSO, guardrails, auditability, and data residency are required rather than merely desirable.
  4. Set observability needs. Decide which logs, traces, attribution, retention periods, and exports your team needs, then verify plan limits.
  5. Model total cost and operations. Include gateway charges and overages, model-provider billing, and the staff effort required to deploy, maintain, and monitor any self-hosted components.

Which option should you shortlist?

  • Shortlist Portkey when you want a hosted gateway with listed routing and governance features and its pricing and deployment terms match your workload.
  • Shortlist OpenRouter when managed access to many models and less proxy operations matter more than controlling the proxy deployment.
  • Shortlist Cloudflare AI Gateway when a managed gateway in your Cloudflare platform context is the relevant fit; verify applicable limits and fees in Cloudflare’s documentation.
  • Consider Vercel AI SDK when the need is an application-level TypeScript interface, not a centralized gateway replacement.
  • Consider direct provider APIs when you can accept provider-specific integration work and do not need a shared gateway layer.

These options solve different problems, so compare them against the LiteLLM capabilities you use rather than against a generic “best” ranking. Third-party comparisons can help identify candidates, but verify volatile prices, model availability, security terms, and service scope on the vendors’ current pages.
